Lyrics:
When I was a kid I rode crates on a skate
And I ate everything momma put on my plate
n****z walked around packin B-B guns
Knock on yo' door and run, just for fun
We went to the sto' and sold bottles fo' a nickel
to feast upon a big bag of Cheetos and a pickle
You could get a soda foe less than quarter, and
people used to speak even if they didn't know ya
We fought in the streets like little black soldiers
Shake hands, and still be friends when it was over
We used to play tag and, hide and go seek, or
hide and go get it if we had a few freaks, but
now thangs changed, kids ain't the same
They bang, and slang, and blow out brains
I wish I could go back but, wishin is for suckers
Life was so simple then
[Hook]
I remember (I remember) ohhhhhhh
when we used to hang
On the porch, drinkin brew
and now they drive-by (bay-bee)
I remember (I remember) ohhhhhhh
when we used to play
shoot-em-up, up and down
but now they gang-bang (bay-bee)
[Verse Two: Billy Boy]
Well I remember yesteryear like it was yesterday
Runnin through the streets of Onessa P-A
I take you through my childhood step by step
Daddy always told me to maintain my rep though
Daddy was a dawg he ain't raise no punks
In the midst of the trees we learned how to thump
At the tender age of nine momma put us on a plane
Next stop -- the land of the insane
Compton, California where the killers grow
Forced to live a life that I didn't know
Wore the wrong colors cause I didn't know the facts
Call her b****, caught a case, caught a slug in my back
But I adapted quickly, suckers tried to get me
Now the fools better run cause this just driveby Billy
Little black boy from the East
forced to be a killer, but I can still remember
[Hook]
I remember (I remember) ohhhhhhh
when we used to play
Domino, on the porch
but now they drive-by (bay-bee)
I remember (I remember) ohhhhhhh
when we used to have
Army fights, in the smog
but now they gang-bang (bay-bee)
[Coolio]
Back when I was a young
We used to have this game called paperball
(Paperball? What's that?)
Get a piece of paper, ball it up
and play with it! Hahahaha
[Verse Three: J-Ro]
I got Tha Alkaholik juice to wake ya up like a rooster
Back when I was young, I used to be a booster
Stealin candy from the sto', go to school, come up
I had the whole playground, chewin all my gum up
You know what I'm sayin? Playin still to the chest
And I was the best, playin kickball at recess
I play Pop Warner, golden pairs for the losers
We used to hop corners on the fresh deuce cruisers
Playin Galaga, Space Invaders, eatin Reese's
I had all the women cause my tough skins had creases
And it's been that way since day one
Girls of the world ain't nothin but fun
I used to watch Dr. J, come through in the clutch
Remember New Zoo Review, and Starsky and Hutch
I remember lunchtime, we used to rhyme out loud
Peace to the Wop and the hip-hop crowd, I remember
[Hook]
Ohhh, my life, no no
I do remember ohhhhhhhh
I know you do
I remember yesterday
I remember when we played
I remember, hell, when we used to play
in ghetto blocks through the dark
I rememmmmmberrrrrr
Yeahhh yeahhh yeahh
We used to play dominoes all night long
dominoes all night long
Yesterday, yesterday
Do you remember yesterday? I remember yesterday
You remember remember remember remember...

My little brother passed away in 2021 at the age of 39. This used to be one of our favorite videos in high school. I also got to meet Coolio that same year. Rest in Peace to you both.

My condolences to you and your family. I come and listen to this song as well because I too lost my brother in late 2022. He was 40, and although this wasn't a favorite of his or anything, it's always been a favorite of mine since I heard it on the Double Dragon movie when I was a kid. When I listen to to it, it reminds me of me and my siblings piled in one bedroom watching tv, playing Sega, or thumbing to rap and wrestling magazines. I really wish you peace. It never stops hurting, but there are times where you DO laugh when you have certain memories of them arent they. Peace my friend.

RIP Coolio. I had It takes a thief as teenager. Reminds of hanging with my best friends. The 90’s were great. Thank you Coolio🙏
Coolio is so on point with the storytelling here. Such a positive and cool track and another great use of the sample of "Synthetic Superstition" from Melvin Bliss
Damn. Seeing this again definitely makes me remember this summer. What a great decade being a teenager living, breathing and sleeping Hip-Hop. Wish I could go back in relive it all over again. Rip to this legend. Can't tell the story of rap without him
This has always been my favorite song by Coolio..ever since 1994 when I had the cassette tape of "It Takes A Thief". That whole album was pretty damn good and far better than "Gangsta's Paradise"- his second album. R.I.P Coolio! You knew how to rap, how to cook, and how to entertain us all as humans and make us laugh and dance to the funky beats and rhymes that came from your music. ✌️
When we were little kids in Richfield, Minnesota, we had a Vietnamese refugee family move next door to us circa 1975, 1976, 1977. one warm summer day, us three siblings were in our backyard, where we had a mature crabapple tree, and somehow us kids starting throwing the ripe crabapples over the fence not sure why, and the Vietnamese kids felt those crabapples coming or heard us, anyway, they were five siblings, and we were three siblings, and we all met at the fence. we were all of similar age, and we immediately started talking, and we have since formed lifelong childhood friendships that are bonded forever.

Coolio didn't die. He just returned to the future.
"paperball" reminds me of "hackeysack" god i miss my people. we use to fold paper into little footballs in school, and a peer would hold their hands like a goal post, and we would flip as best we could our folded paper footballs and hope to skip and flit and fly the little paper football through handmade goalposts of our peers. Much fun! Good times. Great memories.

Damn another legend gone rest up 🙏🏽 Coolio
Many thanks to all those for bringing this song and video to me via KZread. I too have fond memories of when my Mom would bring me with her to the local beauty salon, and while she was having her hair done, she would give me a dime, and as a toddler/pre-schooler, I would walk up to the soda pop machine, the kind of machine that sold Coca-Cola and other products in a glass bottle, and a child could see the soda-pop through the glass door of the refrigerator and after one put a dime (only 10 cents) into the soda-pop machine, one could open the locked door to the soda pop machine and enjoy a tasty beverage. We too played hide and seek, etc. as children. Thank you so much.
