Coolest motion detection sensor ever!

Ғылым және технология

This sensor, the RCWL-0516, is a human body motion detection sensor. It can distinguish between object and person movement. It is so easy to program it, I did it in real time for the video.

Some car alarms use this kind of sensor and they can be adjusted to give a warning if someone comes to within a certain distance of the vehicle or to fully trigger the alarm if they get too close. I had this kind of sensor in one of my cars and it was the only sensor I needed to keep the car protected.

It is not only a human motion body detector as you concluded with your cushion experiment. It is a simple radar unit and looking for large changes. At the frequency it uses, these large changes require things that reflect and absorb the signal to move. Try a piece of foil. It will detect it.

Does it detect relative movment? I mean if you (the human) keep still and you move the sensor, would it detect the still human? I guess to move it you should make a copper shield behind the sensor so it would not detect the person moving the sensor. And do you say it does not detect object movement of any kind? do you thing it is becouse of the water content of the human body? would it detect a bottle of water for example?

I bought a handful of these from Amazon about a month ago. Cost about a buck each. Hooked one up and couldn't get it to react to motion unless my hand was about 2 cm in front of the sensor. I haven't tried any of the other ones but I guess it's a crap shoot for quality when you order Chinese surplus electronics. Maybe if I'm lucky one out of the 6 will work. Instead of driving an Arduino I just hooked an LED up to the output along with a 680 ohm resistor. As I said the LED would light but only when triggered from a short distance. You can select the sensitivity with a resistor but the default with the pads open is supposed to be 7m.

There is a connector marked as "R-GN". When you bridge it with a resistor you can lower the range. If you don't want a direction to be monitored, you could shield it. A simple metal plate will do. Like the test I did with the cocktail shaker in the vid. It shields the sensor completly.

Seems to be exactly what I need! I have been having issues with trespassers on property I own that is semi remote and therefore everything is off grid and power is a issue. I've tried pir sensors but they are easy to get around by moving slow apparently as well as the fact they emit light and are easy to detect after dusk. Have you determined a range limit? And it would help if you would make a list of required parts as I am not familiar with arduino as of this post. Completely awesome video, best useable info yet and I'm purchasing the boards asap. 👍👍👍

Why would people come in your property & walk slooowly, trying to get around sensors? What are you hiding there anyway? :p)

Nice idea! But I doubt it will work. 1. When you move the sensor it triggers itself. Even the vibration of the motor can trigger the sensor. 2. I'll guess the rain drops are too small to detect for the sensor (see kzread.info/dash/bejne/YnyNtKZsZambZ5M.html where a cat has to be in close proximity to trigger the sensor). 3. Usually a vehicle is controlled by a human, that would trigger the sensor.

Hello there, again! I want to make a lightbox that turns on and off with gestures and I will use this radar with an Arduino Uno. I have a some questions: 1) how can I limit the area where the radar is reading? I want to leave only a spot and try to make it work reading gestures. So far, I can't find the way to find that "blindness", its or total in both ways, or read everything or I need to block it inside a stainless steel bottle so it doesn't read anything... I already tried a microwave horn, and nope, didn't work. Unless I did it wrong somehow.. which materials or ideas could you recommend me to solve this? 2) Voltage. So, I am using 12V LEDs, how can I adapt the voltage so the RCWL don't get fried? lol So it get the normal 3V the radar needs. I was watching your other video, where you talk about the APDS-9960. The problem with that one, is that I was looking something "cleaner" with the PIR I will need to create a hole, which I would not want... but since I am having a bunch of troubles with this, I am starting to consider it.. suggestions??? Thank you so much for your content! :D

  • @nenioc187

    @nenioc187

    6 жыл бұрын

You can decrease the RCWL's sensitivity by soldering a resistor to R-GN. With a 1 MOhm you can decrease the range from 7M to 5M. You can try it with a potentiometer to fulfill your needs. If you want to make a lamp that you can turn on/off by gesture, you'll definitely need a gesture or a proximity sensor. Spoiler: Next video is about a lamp, that is controlled via Smartphone and can be turned on/off by gestures (used the APDS9960) ;-)

Thank you for your answer! In this case I am interested in no more than 30cm of reading area. What I want, is to "interact" with my light box. The original idea was doing it by gestures. Where waving the hand once (as if you say hello) will turn on and twice (as if you say bye) will turn off. If this is not possible, maybe just make it read what it detects, the problem here is that the code I used don't let me (and I don't know how to change it) change the time it takes between the read from one move to the other. Sometimes it takes 2secs sometimes almost a min, and sometimes reads fake movements!! ): For this test, I used State Change Detection (Edge Detection), which works similar as by gestures. The problem of using the APDS9960 is that I will be forced to make a visor for my PIR, to detect the gesture. And it may not work since it will be interrupted by the light inside the box. Unless I put some sort of small tube (like a straw size maybe?) the problem there is that my light box is made of milky white acrylic sheets, which will create a shadow on the way.. unless I sacrifice some distance.... The optimal distance for that one to work was around 7cm up to 25cm (saw another guy trying it in another video) So, for the RCWL there is no way I can make like a small box made of some metal, with a small open area (the visor) to read only a specific angle/area? Thank you!!! p.s. sorry for the huuuuuuuuuuge text, but I am so lost at this point and I have tried several stuff and I need to finish my prototype asap! D:

Each of your approaches might work. Boxing the RCWL sensor, or making a small hole for the APDS sensor. If you'll using the gesture sensor: I'll recommend following: Use one wave to turn it on and one wave to turn it off again. You avoid false reading you'll probably get, if you rely on the two wave method.

There are two solder points marked R-GN. With a resistor here, you can decrease the range. Corresponding to the datasheet a 1MOhm resistor would decrease the range from 7 meter to 5 meter. The signal can be totally blocked by metal. Like in the video, where I put it in a metal container. So you could build a shield out of steel.

While out recently on location to test out my devices 2 of my RoePods activated despite being adequate distance between myself and the units. It's worth mentioning that one of the RoePods I had placed under the exact spot where someone had hanged themselves. I also used an SB7 Ghostbox and a Sony PX440 voice recorder, both which gave me an indication that something was manipulating the Ghostbox and different vocals were recorded on the voice recorder that shouldn't have been there. Incidentally I do not use Arduino or any script. I have played around with ways to power 1st RoePods used 2 x 18650 batteries. The 2 RoePod minis (65 x 45 x 30) I used 9v batteries. On the more compact 75 x 45 x 18 cases I used 2 x CR2032 button batteries.

Hi, I use this sensor in my Paranormal research and have built what I named RoePod and RoePod mini. I have had great success using this sensor in my custom built devices out on location where at least 3 known suicides have taken place. Allowing adequate distance between myself and my RoePods and one device being placed on a tripod under the exact spot where a suicide was found hanging. 2 of my custom built RoePods did activate, the other I had placed in a doorway that was the 1st to activate. As I walked over to the device which had already reset itself and as I bent down to retrieve it the other RoePod placed in the spot where the suicide was found hanging began to sound and flashing its LED at the same time. I cannot explain why these 2 devices activated as I made absolutely sure that enough distance was between myself and the devices. These sensors have a 360 coverage, can detect through walls and are unaffected by wind, animals, bugs, mosquitoes and require a human or something else to manipulate the devices to get them to activate. I am also constructing a Paranormal music box using this sensor, currently I am waiting for the musical movements to show up to continue on with this project. The movements will be powered by a small 3v motor using 2 alloy pulleys and a toothed belt. Its basically a trigger device that the spirits can manipulate to activate. Incidentally I am building many variations of the musical box using different sensors, I will try out vehicle backup distance sensors, this will be a first for me. Respect from Taiwan, stay safe and enjoy your Christmas.

OUT goes to high (3.3VDC) when notion is detected. On power up, LED comes on for 2 secs, then off for several seconds while the board boots up, then ready to detect. You could have just connected the output directly to the LED, but no, we gotta use an Arduino to make it look like we know what we are doing.
