Cool Cars For Young People: The 2009 Honda Accord i-DTEC

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In today's video we are looking at Matt's Honda Accord i-DTEC. Honda's attempt at going upmarket didn't work very well, with the car being too expensive compared with the more "premium" BMW 3 series.
However, with second hand examples available for very little - is the Honda now worth looking at used?

I think I know what James means. Personally, although I respect Honda as a highly trusted company who's record on reliability is amongst the top tier of car manufacturers, I consider them to have a very on/off existence with thier cars. They either go all out Banzai on it with screaming engines and flailing knives, or they let some very old men in very beige shirts and a tie design it instead, as if passion and excitement is a rare commodity to be rationed out to only something with an R at the end of the name. There doesn't seem to be any kind of middle ground. Because the majority of the volume produced cars sold are the more "regular" type, people see the staide, beige imaged everyday Honda like the Jazz and think "they're the same sort of thing as a Fiesta or Corsa". Consequently, Honda are not as premium in image as they probably deserve. People like and respect thier reliability and thier safe choices whilst also seeing them as a little overpriced. Ultimately Honda lack the width of mode ranges to really be able to put enough of the produce in people hands at a price that matches the price or the expectation of some. So we find Honda in this weird stuck elevator level, not as attainable as a Vauxhall, but not as lusted after as a BMW.

bit more background on this car... I was working for my local Honda dealer at the time and took this particular accord in as a trade in against a new Civic sport. That customer had bought the accord at 6 months old as an ex-demo. when he traded it in I was in a situation where I was driving 50 miles a day and at the time I had a Toyora Aristo (which I bought from Torque GT - Where Matt works now) it was costing me around £10-15 a day in fuel so I parked it up and jumped on the Accord. I've had a lot of Hondas but I can safely say that I genuinely miss this car. I fitted the BC coils (A vast improvement over the stock suspension - Jay mentions that it feels a bit bouncy and floaty, on stock suspension its like driving on air but not in a good way) also put the FN2 wheels on it with plans for some baller chrome VIP wheel but never got round to it. Matt doesn't let me forget I sold it either! haha! Honestly a great car but a lot of the shortfalls you mentioned are right. I would still take this over an old Beemer any day though. Nice review Jay, cool to see one of my old cars get its 10.47 mins of fame! :)

I was delighted when I read this title, it brings back great memories for me. I had a 51 plate Accord 2.0i SE as my very first car in 2009 as a 17 year old. I felt like the bees knees, my mates and school contemporaries who had passed their tests mostly had Polos, Corsas and Puntos etc. I loved that car, kept it for 5 years. Had many great driving experiences during that time, I used to pretend I was James Thompson driving his BTCC supertourer on my local back roads. It was reliable, practical, handled well, was good in the snow, and sounded superb with the VTEC. Worst problem was corrosion I’d say.

Loved our Accord diesel tourer. It was abused up and down the motorway and on A roads, I loved taking it on holiday to France with it filled to the rafters with kids and camping gear. I never had any issues with reliability, the only time it let me down was when I accidentally drained the battery in France and had to get a jump from roadside assistance.

I've owned one of these, good points were it was very reliable, always started and the refinement was excellent, especially on the motorway. I sold it as I didn't find it an engaging enough drive, which I know doesn't matter to a lot of people who just want a reliable daily. Also I could feel the clutch starting to wear which is a common problem on these. It also felt too cumbersome and 'floaty' compared to the MK7. A great all-rounder that won't let you down though

So lets get to the real reason Honda didn't sell many Accords of this this shape. It was purely down to VW's Diesel gate. The company car driver would go to his/her Honda showroom and say this is nice, i like it but lets to pop next door to the VW dealers. They then see how little company car tax they would pay compared with the Honda due to VW "low emissions" and drive away in a Passat. No wonder truthful Honda stopped selling them here in the UK. The ones that did buy the Accord would win in one way.............only one visit to the dealers every year and that was for its annual service. The German stuff on the other hand!!!!!

I've been looking at the Honda Accord for some time, reaching 'Honda man' average age and wanting a reliable car with some performance, being on a limited budget. The only thing that puts me off is the pedestrian acceleration, apart from the Type-S, and on that basis I prefer the Lexus IS. Prices have now reached reasonable levels, for a 10-12 year old car, but I still see average prices around the £5K mark.

A decent dad car for those who need an all rounder, budget friendly, economical, practical, run of the mill, mile munching, average performing car. Personally, if I was spending 3k, I would go for the civic type r gt. I paid 7k for my e93 m sport convertible a few years ago and that does the job just fine too. I could buy something more expensive but don’t see the point as nowadays the uk roads are poor, speed traps everywhere and if you manage to avoid all those, there is always someone who feels the need to put a nice scratch on your pride and joy because that’s what the uk has become!

Hondas can be proper pricey for insurance. I've always had USDM models here in the UK and they are so expensive to insure because the parts are just insanely priced. Someone crashed into the rear quarter of my EJ coupe and the insurer wanted to write it off because Honda would only supply the rear bumper already painted from Ohio.
