Hmmm. Just thinking here. Couldn't you save yourself snipping out the plastic by aiming the LED towards one of the pegs on the clear part of the buttons and having the peg act like a light pipe?
Awesome, that's a great look. I'd consider adding a 4th LED to the bottom of the d-pad to more evenly light that up (or whatever is opposite of the current one, it looked like it was at the top). Great look nonetheless.
Your videos are incredible! You deserve so many more subscribers, keep up the good work!

Thank you!
Very nice! Your videos are always so professional. Keep up the good work!
Nice!!!!! I'm working on my second backlight bivert modded DMG now. And this looks another great easy mod too.
You know, making a custom Gameboy with these LED's, these Buttons and a backlight makes a fantastic gift to somebody.
That mod looks so cool!
These are gorgeous! I need to pick up some new buttons for my Micro but I need the DMG A&B colored buttons.
Wow those look really cool, i'm gonna do that to my DMG !
Amazing video, as always
Another great video, thank you!
dam this is exactly what im looking for. nice work
Wow very interesting this, congratulations
These are awesome! I am late to the boat I havent seen these before. Nice video as always! You plan on doing any more gameboy mods in the near future?
very amazing videos!
oh thats great. love it!
Yo, thanks for the awesome tutorial! Question for ya, in your video you're using red and blue wire. Do the wires come with the Hand-Held-Legend, LED module kit? If not, what gauge wire are you using?
Very cool!
I really wish they had these buttons for the color! It would be perfecto!
Your vids are great. What kind of screwdriver set is that?
Another great video ! Do you think there is enough room to make this mod in a pocket modem?
Hey Colin - love your videos and watch them all the time! I just wanted to ask you, if I were to use these LEDs on my game boy color - to which solder points would you recommend I solder the positive and negative cables to? And can I use the 28 guage wire available on HHL website?
@ThisDoesNotCompute

28 gauge should be just fine. As for the solder points, my episode on installing a frontlight module in a GBC shows a good option, though you may need to add a resistor if the LEDs end up too bright.
Where would I connect these on the new backlight mods board? Since it doesn't have the same cap? And on the other board that holds the cart where is a 5v connector and ground I could use there?
How do the led lights affect the battery life ?
You Could Have Gone With The Red Buttons So It Matches Darth Vaders Lightsaber
These videos are great! Who the heck would give it a thumbs down?

People against console modding?
@alexhardline2208

People who like to burn their eyes trying to play Pokémon for five hours straight on their original Game Boy without backlight. They think modding ruins a console when it clearly gives them a second life.
awesome thk you
Wouldn't you get more even lighting if you sanded the back edge of the clear outer? That way it acts as edge lighting?
I love watching your videos and Im going to do this to my own dmg when I get my replacement case for it and I was wondering can I solder the leds to a on/off switch?

These look really cool, but I don't know what color would look best with my red gameboy.
@Jay84476

go with blue and call it bubble gum gameboy
It would've been cool to use red LEDs instead of white ones to go with the Darth Vader theme.
Hey Colin, think there is room to do this on a pocket?
nice work any chance of x/y buttons as well?
I just had my original Game Boy cleaned on the inside and its start and select buttons replaced. Before, the start button would double-press (unpause as soon as it's released) and while it does now only take me one press to pause the game now, I still get double-pressing on some presses. I also had one of my Game Boy Colors given the same treatment 2 years ago but 2 years later the double-pressing is now as frequent as it was before. Anyone got a permanent fix for this? I really hope someone can come up with a microswitched start/select mod...
try gluing those two parts of buttons with loca so they would look like they were embeded in clear plastic not obly enclosed
The lighted buttons has been the one mod so far I was not able to succeed on. My soldering iron keeps acting weird and absorbing too much solder and it ended up destroying all the leads on all of my little chip LEDs. Ugh.

I actually ended up trying again with just 3 through-hole LEDs chained together with a resistor and it worked out rather well. A bit messier, but I did have the option of using red LEDs instead of plain white.
Any thoughts on modding a GBBoy Colour?
How about a video about the Game Boy Interface as a much better replacement to the Game Boy Player disc that is a Free homebrew download?
I'm thinking... I like this video, it's pretty straight forward, but if I wanted to be able to turn off those LEDs when I'm not in low ight conditions, how would I go about that? Install some kind of switch somewhere on the case? So I can turn those LEDs on and off when I want?

I have to say, I'm waiting for these LEDs to arrive from HHL, but I'm concerned about battery life on IPS display with these LEDs as an addition power eating mod. Switch should be possible, just not sure which one and how to connect it.
Those are sexy, I wish you would have put an led in the bottom of the d-pad as well for even lighting.
What kind of wire did u use? ^^ (Red and blue one)
cool
Damn man, you're awesome! I'm glad you got them before me xD but I would of loved to have hit it first! I'll still do a video, just not to your level of expertise :( haha

Definitely do a video! With the different colors and combined with other mods, there are a ton of ways to make cool-looking Game Boys now.

I'll work on it soon! I need to do better to compare to your great videos and awesome, but steadily rising sub count! Plus I still need to send you that Gameboy. Got really caught up in life, sorry about that.

The best advice I can offer anyone who creates videos is to not worry about production quality. Focus on the content itself -- make videos that are clear, concise, and engaging. There are plenty of KZreadrs who have tons of subscribers who shoot everything with a smartphone. Just focus on telling a good story. :-)

Good! I'll keep that in mind, I try to pop out my videos just like that :) I need help selling my painted DMGs though lol.
You could probably sell that gameboy for a million dollars.. nah its worth more than that. Nice job :)
Is your backlight suitable for game boy advance buttons?
Can you get these for the GBC? They'd look awesome :D

where do you solder the wires to on the gbc ?
What gauge wire is used for the LED mod? I've got 22 gauge but not sure if that's an appropriate wire for the job.
@ThisDoesNotCompute

22-gauge should be just fine!

Andrew Fillhart. what about 18g?? Would it be too thick?
I have Philips screws in the back of my DMG-01. Is this normal? Rare? Or was this Game Boy possibly repaired before? I don’t think it was.
Hi, are this buttons compatible with GBC as well ?
I’m gonna just be replacing the silicone pads, that should be pretty easy, right? And it’s on a GBP.
Nice! I'll do this mod, thanks for the video! ps: what about installing a rechargeable battery into a gameboy?

The DMG can function somewhere between 4,X and 6 Volts. So you have to use a very small sized 3,7V 2000mah Lipo like www.adafruit.com/products/2011 or "Garmin A2X128A2, 2000mAh extended" and combine it for example with www.adafruit.com/product/2465 It is easily possible to fit all of this in the DMG. Also you can cut a hole in the bottom of the DMG to make the USB port of www.adafruit.com/product/2465 accessible.
oh! I like your videos!! I can upgrade my GB,GBC by your video. um..Can you upload about hand held legend's GBC overclock?
Hand held legends has the best shit
where to find for gameboy pocket?
Yay for 3M VHB!
Do they have game boy advance buttons?
I wonder how much shorter battery life will be because of this mod.
So it's like original Xbox buttons, that's cool.
can you do this on a OG GBA? pls pls pls
Is that compatible with Game Boy Advance?

I was about to ask the same thing, except more on the lines of where you would solder the LEDs to. Maybe where you would solder the frontlight kit to it?
i would fill them with loca
let's hang out
that by the way is not daisy chaining. just saying.
I hope that's not an original Game Boy shell because you made me cringe when you were cutting it apart... Q ^ Q
