Cooking with Moms Around the World

Moms make some pretty special meals. And its no surprise, food is love and its a way to show how you feel about someone. I asked you to talk a bit to us about your moms and share some of your favorite meals. I guess this is an ode to moms video. I'm ok with that.

My Moms Pizza Bread
Take a store-bought pizza dough and allow to rise on the counter over night.
Spray a baking tray (ideally with holes on the bottom) and oil your hands, gently spread the dough your desired shape.
Beat 1 egg and wash the top so toppings will stick.
Add seeds, salt and sliced tomato. Top with grated parmesan. Bake at 400 for 40 minutes (but it depends on your oven so just keep your eye on it!)

Rice Balls: docs.google.com/document/d/13...
Rice and Tuna
Cook white rice, add chopped tomato. Mix Tuna and mayo, salt and pepper, combine in 1 bowl. Fry some plantians and serve!

I don’t have a mum (she was absent) but my older brother was who looked out for me growing up. He’s 25 years older than me and everyday after work he would come home and we would cook food together. He built and refurbished restaurants and they would give him things like steaks, fresh vegetables, boxes of their complimentary chocolates ect and he would plan a meal for the two of us based on what they gave him and the recipes they had in their kitchen. He was my superhero growing up

I don't remember much of my mom because she died when I was five years old, but I remember her carrot cake, raspberry juice popsicles, shepherd's pie, latkes, kasha bows, and the immense amount of effort that she took in taking care of my brothers and I. @@BerylShereshewsky Hi Beryl! Sorry to hijack this comment but this video is from May and I don't think you would see my comment otherwise! But I really wanted to share this recipe with you that my mom made up. She and my father passed a few years ago and I think you would love this recipe. I live in Delaware, but grew up in Newark DE. My family lived in poverty most of my life, but my mom and dad always seemed to make sure we had a roof and food. The dish is called Saucy Dogs. My mom's version was quite literally just hot dogs, a whole white onion, ketchup, mustard, worcestershire sauce, and water. And ofcourse salt, pepper and butter. She would just sautee the onions in the butter until they were soft and transluecent, perhaps starting to caramelize (depending on how much time she had). She would make slits all the way down the hot dog so it would be like a ladder going up the hot dog. I think it is best when the slits almost cut all the way through the hotdog, but it still remains whole. Then she would throw those in. Cooking at a fairly high temperature to started browning and charring the hot dogs. Then she would squirt a bunch of ketchup (maybe like a half cup or so) into a bowl with some mustard (tablespoon perhaps), then dash in some worcestershire sauce, brown sugar (maybe a teaspoon or 2) enough water to make it saucy. Season the sauce. Then she would pour it on the hotdogs and onions and cook it till it was absorbed into the onions and the hotdogs were all charry and delicious - but there is still sauce left in the pan. The sauce would be quite thick enrobing the onions. And we'd eat it just like that without anything else. When I was a kid I wouldn't eat the onions. I've totally adapting and made Saucy Dogs sooooo much more complex and sophisticated now. I cut the hot dogs up into bite size pieces and sautee them i a dry pan until they are blakened all over. Setting them aside, I will dice up tons shallot, garlic, ginger, de-seeded jalapeno, green onion, celery, turmeric, and those tiny sweet peppers. I'll throw all that onto the pan (same pan used to char the hot dogs) with a little bit of oil (i tend to use flax seed oil as it is good for high heat and has more omega 3's than 6's, the flavor doesn't really play a part) and sweat all that down for quite a while with some salt, pepper, tamarind paste/concentrate, cumin, coriander and allspice. Then I will get together all the ingredients; ketchup (i use about 1/8-1/4 cup of spicy ketchup and a tablespoon or so of beet root ketchup all the time), mustard (tablespoon of banana pepper mustard!!!), gochugang (korean fermented hot pepper paste, 2 teaspoons or so), oyster sauce (2 teaspoons or so), a splash of lime juice, fish sauce & mirin. I like using palm sugar nowadays instead of brown sugar, about teaspoon. I used to use a few teaspoons of soy sauce but now I like to use a few dashes of dark/black soy sauce. I like to sprinkle some instant dashi powder (the kind that is just kombu and shiitake) on as well with about a tablespoon or two of water. I add all the ingredients for the sauce in separately. So I'll add the gochunjang fairly early during the sautee. I add in all the sauce ingredients until it have become a nice thickish sauce and then I add the hot dogs back in with more of the sweet peppers and just cook a few more minutes until the sauce has covered all the hot dogs and peppers. I will also grate a decent amount of frozen galangal into this. I love adding kefir lime leaves and lemongrass as well occasionally. When It comes out the pan I like to cover it with a blanket of green herbs. Usually the green leafy part from the celery that I call celery herb (my favorite herb) and green onions. But I'll top it with green onions & parsley or cilantro. Not basil or mint though, those don't really seem to go with it as well. I'll often substitute alot of ketchup for leftover marinara from pizza places or tomato paste, I've even used diced canned tomatoes. Sooooooooooooo lovely. While onions were the mainstay of my moms saucy dogs, those tiny sweet peppers are the mainstay of mine. Sometimes I like to take it super thai and use golden mountain seasoning, thai curry paste and leave out some of the more chinese ingredients or more indian style and used a delightful curry powder & paste and a lot more spices & garam masala. Alot of the time I end up eating mine with rice because it can get quite spicey and saucy. It was so funny when I asked my mom to teach me how to make it. She was like "uh, you just throw this stuff together and cook." Getting amounts out of her was impossible lol. I do hope you end up reading this and trying out Saucy Dogs!

I don't have a relationship with my mom, which is an understatement. It's to the extent that I fundamentally don't understand how people can talk and open up to their mothers , that was never me growing up. But that's just my relationship. It heartens me to see that there are people out there with loving and trusting relationships because our parents, and our moms, are such an influential part of our lives.

My mom DID cook, but it wasn't very often. A lot of times she was working, so it was my dad who made me dinner, and he relied on a lot of convenience foods because I was a very picky eater, and he often worked 12 hour shifts. But he still showed love in food when he could. When he got changed to the night shift I'd come home at lunch and he'd make me something, knowing I'd be on my own for dinner. And he made sure our fridge was never without fresh cut fruit and vegetables, which came out at every meal. Now that I'm older and eat a lot more things, he's showed me how his grandma taught him to make scalloped potatoes, and he and his family taught me how to make their mom's pasty. And when my dad and I went to Finland we took a cooking class, so I think of him every time I make Finnish meatballs or salmon soup.

I am a great cook and so is my husband and so is our daughter. the love for food and family definitely comes from my Dad who was a great cook and the heart and soul of our family. He got people together at our dinner tables where we would sit ( with the extended family after remarrying) for hours ad talk about everything. Everyone was welcome at our table and everyone was treated as an equal. He passed almost 2 years ago and I miss him every day just like I still miss my mom

I never cook regularly, only to teach and in special occasions. My ex was stay-at-home dad, so he cooked most times. When we broke up and I moved out, I was already training my 14 yr old to cook. Once she was comfortable in the kitchen, she cooked most dinners or her dad would cook and eat with us at home. When I remarried, my husband had a 14 year old and she became the trainee, so we had 4 people (one trainee and 3 that knew how to cook) cooking at the house. When my eldest moved out, my youngest turned 14 and there we went with training. Currently we have 4 people that can cook at home, and the adult children always take over the kitchen with some crazy dinner they want to try. I cook only when they request a dish or when I want to surprise them if they are having a less than stellar day. We are 4 years away from training the last kid. I strongly believe in teaching them how to cook way before they turn 18. I want to know they are prepared to feed themselves once they go out into the world.

Honestly, that's just kind of strange to me for her to protest in that way since cooking can be a form of showing your love. & Extending that to your child is one of the best gifts you can give... But both parents should be taking turns to cook and show their children how to cook, unless one of them stays at home. The person who stays at home should be the main cook of the household IMO.

@@TheSunBringsJoy yes, but when she was a mom, all women were expected to stay home and cook for the family (and not do anything else). So if she wanted to work full time (in those days) then maybe she had to sacrifice cooking for her family. Glad things are did now and women can both work and be the moms they want to be. Thanks to the women who came before us 🙂

*Mom* = *Home* I love to say - elwherever she is ,home's there. There ain't really one without her. I always say this - *Maa to maa hai re!* , meaning a mother is always a mother , in literal terms . There ain't anyone like her, she's one of her kind(did it make any sense?🙃🤷‍♀️) . Such a sweet vid, Beryl !

This was a lovely video Beryl! I know this probably sounds out of nowhere, but I would really love to see a perspective from father's side. In short, I grow up in a house without a mother and no female role model on my side. My father wasn't the best cook in the world, but he would really make great meals for me and my brother. With an already hard job, he would still found time for us to cook nice stuff from recipe books and be taught our family friends. I would like to put fathers also on a list as inspiration for some of us. I know definitely, I learned a lot from him to value people and basic things and appreciate what we have around us.

Thank you so much for sharing this video! There's a little ache in my heart because this is the first mother's day without my mama with me. She passed away on April 19 because of COVID-19, but she fought and was selfless until the end. She was known as an amazing cook! She made the best Filipino homestyle dishes and it's been my goal to cook as well as she did, although I could never compare to her. One of my fondest memories I have of my Mama and I were our little cooking sessions together. She taught me how to cook adobo, sinigang, sinampalukan, beef steak, maja blanca and her baked mac. We had so much fun making meals together and I loved how she taught me everything she knew, and enjoyed doing it for me. Sometimes she would smile, lean back on the countertop and just let me do my thing, so I could discover my capabilities. She was warm, loving, and encouraging. Last year, she gave me her very first cookbook from the 70s! She kept it and wanted me to have it, because that's where she began learning how to make dishes. :) There are still a lot that I wish she could have shown me, but I know she'll continue to guide me from heaven. So thank you, Beryl. For making such wonderful videos and collaborating with others from around the world, sharing amazing recipes and stories.

Growing up my mom was a single parent with 3 kids, and a lot of the time our food came from food banks, so her recipes were always very on the spot inventive, but one of my favorite things were her soups or stews, they were always delicious and different, and I always took pride in the fact that my mom was able to feed her family with so little ( I was the oldest and always understood what our family was going through). I remember multiple times where she went hungry just so myself and my siblings could eat( one example was when my mom had a job at a sandwich shop, and she got a free sandwich every day for lunch, and instead she would save it, so at the end of the week, all of us kids would have a special treat for dinner, because we could never afford takeout, and it meant the world to us). That is a real warrior in my heart, and I can't thank her enough for her sacrifices. I genuinely loved this video, thank you so much for sharing and showing how strong other mothers are. It's a true blessing to have a mom who would sacrifice anything and everything for her children. I really look forward to your next video ❤❤

So not all of us had a mom growing up, but most of us had someone that took over that part and gave us a glimpse of what is like to have one... my grandma was that to me. My favorite dish she made was polenta with fish head broth. I know, it sounds weird, but it was so good! She only had that for lunch occasionally and usually alone. One day I woke up sick and stayed home, she made it and offered me a bite and I was hooked! After that, the day before she was going to make it, she would tell me to "talk to the teachers" and I would go early to school and tell each teacher that I wanted to leave early. They would give me the assignment of the day and see me to the next class. I would be home by noon and have polenta and fish broth with her. She passed 10 years ago and I miss her so much. Happy mother's day Abuela. Thank you for your love and the memories. Oh how I miss you 😢

Since my kids are so young, they don't tell me how I'm doing or what they like and it's easy to get down on myself for not being a good mom. This video made me realize (hopefully) one day, my son or daughter will say these nice things about the food I make for them. ❤️ It also really made me miss my mom who is literally on the other side of the world (she's in Wisconsin and I'm in Taiwan).
