Cooking on the Wood Stove - Making treats for Thanksgiving

The holiday season is looking quite different for us this year. Experimenting and learning how to cook on a wood cook stove has been so much fun. Not everything turns out, but it usually tastes pretty good.
This year we made some chicken soup, lemon poppyseed "muffins" and pizzelles.

No hate here just a cooking tip from an old lady. When making soup with chicken hold off adding your cooked picked chicken to the pot until after you’ve added and cooked your veggies. The vegetables will cook faster without competing with the chicken. Once the veggies are cooked add your chicken. Once the chicken is warmed up, you’re ready to eat. Hope you had a lovely day. Happy holidays.

I agree. The cooked chicken loses its flavor.

I think your “Cooking Show” was perfect! The soup really looked good, the muffin/cake was perfect, and the Pitzels (sp) were super great! I cannot imagine cooking on a wood stove, so I consider both of you as experts! I hope you’ll cook other things. Looks like Alaska life agrees with you because you’re both well and happy. Happy Thanksgiving to you from Texas!

Love your channel!! (I just made my first soup this past winter and it was a lot like you did. I didn't add corn, but that's something I might do next time. I think I added peas b/c that's what I had in the freezer. **I also added a bit of half & half, but you could use butter. It added some heft to it. I also added cheese on top after I put in the bowl b/c I love cheese lol.) Anyways, sorry to give unsolicited advice, but I'm learning how to cook so just wanted to tell the internet. :) Also God bless you both!! I love that you're doing things for the first time; that is what makes this channel so great.

You were smart to dry those veggies. Never tried garlic. Good for you.keep your dried fruit from exposure to light and it will keep it fresher looking. Parsley should grow well up there. Mine is still showing growth late into fall and tolerating a little frost in Wisconsin.

As the only soup lover in my family and it being summer and 8am in the morning here in a heatwave in South Africa your delishes looking soup made me so hungry for soup, that despite all the aforementioned I cooked me a big pot of Chicken soup and will enjoy a cup every now and then this week as well. It is never to warm for soup for me.😊 Love your channel and at 55 you guys inspire me 🩷🩷🩷🩷

When a recipe calls for milk and you are using powder milk and the powder to your dry ingredients, stir it in, then add water to your wet ingredients. Because the powdered milk is in the dry ingredients there will be no lumps. (Eg. Two tbsp of dry milk powder makes one cup of milk). I use this in all recipes so i can save the real milk for drinking. They make skim milk powder and a whole milk powder. The whole milk powder has a good mouth feel, it is more like real milk in taste. Save the fat off your boiled chicken. It is called schmaltz and is great for use when frying eggs or making bread or biscuits.
