I really enjoyed this one you two, I commend you on your courage and determination to turn your ideas into reality. We know you will make it through winter and I have a hankering suspicion soon enough you will rest assured with your decision. Keep up all the hard work, it doesn't go in vain. Take care! 🙂

You two have accomplished quite a bit in the time you have been there, and done it all while suffering some major setbacks that would have broken others. I can respect Cody with his "maybe" or "to be determined" answer because he is being honest. You both have taken a tremendous leap in life to do what you have done and there are still quite a bit of unknowns that you will have to face which can be both challenging and exciting. I think you two can do achieve your dreams and goals, just don't give up. It has been a pleasure to watch you both and I look forward to continue watching you as you build your home!

I'm not ashamed to admit that I was a little heartbroken to hear Cody's response to the final question. I think you both are way underestimating yourselves! I spent most of my life in Alaska. As an adult, I had a homestead with 4 kids and off-grid. It was alot I of work, but so rewarding! You have only been there a very short time, and you've accomplished more than most do in years! You've had some tough breaks but you've risen above everything. Yes, it's a challenging life... but you've both proven you're more than up for it. You have all the skills you need to survive and thrive right where you're at. Stop saying "maybe" and create a homestead that serves you, rather than the other way around. You both are amazing! Enjoy the journey!

As a lifetime Alaskan… I recommend you get some vitamin D3 to get through the darker days. Also, make sure to get a long track older snowmachine like a skidoo tundra (or similar)with a hitch for hauling wood and supplies. Chickens will need to be protected from foxes, etc… i wouldn’t do pigs at all. (Ugh they are escape artists lol) garden will need a 6+ foot fence or the moose will come and mow it all down. Bees need to be protected from bears. Keep your water pump indoors. I’m so proud of you all… I’ve lived off grid in the wilderness of western Alaska. I also highly suggest a bath house that has a small wood stove. In the bush, we did rocks on the stove like a steam bath (sauna) and a wringer washer inside… you can hang clothing inside on lines above the stove either in the bath house or your house. Keep a good pot of water on your wood stove to deal with the winter dryness. So much fun!

I believe you can do this! Hang in there lean on each other, trust in one another and be strong. You got this if it’s what you want. You’re both young remember that. My husband and I are old now and we’ll be moving to Alaska in the spring. We have our plans and we know that we’re going to make it. We’ve owned our property for 3 years but we’ve planned so many things out. I guess what I’m trying to say is please don’t give up on this if it’s your dream.

Building your A-frame was the absolute right decision. You will spend some money on it and you will make mistakes, but you will have a roof over your head for as long as you need it and you will learn a million valuable lessons that will help you with your long term goals. You can survive if you need to haul in water, even every day, but you can't survive winter without a heated house. A woodshed is a good goal, but you can make do with a tarped woodpile as long as you keep the path shoveled and clear the snow from one side of the pile as you use it. I can't remember what you guys are doing for snowplowing, but some sort of motorized plow would be a really good thing to have before winter hits. This lifestyle is about incremental improvements over time; we all have lofty goals when we start but quickly realizing that you have to be ok with having the bare minimum for a while is the the only way to succeed. Its not a perfect paradise; there will be tough and uncomfortable times, but you get through them and the good times are that much better. Humans have been living self-sufficient lifestyles forever; you are equipped to deal with it. However, what is new to humans is social media and having your lives visible to everyone, and that might be the biggest risk to your success. I enjoy seeing you guys progress, but I hope you keep some of your lives for yourselves and are able to detach from all the inevitable negativity that putting yourselves out there brings. Just remember, the negative experts that tell you how wrong you're doing it have probably never done anything like this in their lives, or else they would have a decent amount of humility.

I don't think you guys give yourselves enough credit for what you have accomplished! I watched you leave your home and stopped in the middle of a forest. And look at what I'm seeing today! Through any hardship you've endured, perseverance seems to be your motto. You are inspiring many. Keep going forward with God's blessing! 👍👍🙏

I'm sure that the coming winter will be filled with new life lessons, but you've managed to overcome everything thrown at you so far with dignity and grace. When you don’t know how to do something or even what to do you do your research and figure it out then take it one step at a time. And that says a lot about the both of you. The life you’ve chosen has huge challenges and huge rewards are possible. I can’t wait to see where you are in life in a year, 5 years and 10 years from now. Winter will be a challenge for sure but you are up to it. One thing please take short regular breaks to do those things you find fun like fishing and hunting and enjoying the awesome place your are now living in. Your journey reminds me of my younger years. One big advernture. Lot's of learning. Some pitfalls. Some successes. But for me even the pitfalls were useful at teaching me. I've flipped houses in multiple states, always looking for those areas where building codes were lax or non-existent. Afterall, people built durable homes long before there were building codes. No one knows where this adventure will take you. If you run it out and decide to do elsewise that will be okay too. Big thing is at least staying committed to each other without bailing out. Hopefully you two can agree enough to remain together.

Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions and share many of your thoughts and goals with us! You will be fine, I am sure of it! You both have accomplished so much in a short time! My husband and I moved to another country in the EU and it has been a struggle and a learning curve. We had a big fire this year. It cost us a lot. Our cabin survived. It was a miracle. Half of my garden burned down, too. We suffered 60,000 euros of damage. Our solar system also went up in flames. We have been here for 2 years. After the fire came the drought this summer. The river has been out of water for 4 months and our well has been dry for 2 months. Our neighbor gave us water from his deep well. It was never easy to live in the countryside and off grid. We are now working on a cistern. It will hold 30,000 gallons of water. Enough to get us through the hot summer. Giving up is not an option. We are older and everything takes longer. The journey is the goal!

Don't give up. Don't ever give up. It's all mental. When you exhausted all you've got , dig deeper. You will be surprised. This is one of the first things you learn in boot camp. Next summer I will move in that area. Five miles north east of Talkeetna, as the crow fly. I purchased 15 acres site unseen in 2008. Family and job didn't allowed me to move there, until now. And I am thirty years older than you two. I am preparing also. Purchased 24' cargo trailer, Can am 570 quad , snow machine an trailer, most of tools, fire arms and ammo, chain saws , and perhaps a portable saw mill is in the future. I also have an old but solid, 1999 , F 350 truck. I will set up a wall or bell tent on a deck ,until I build a 12"X16" cabin. Always start small. Right now I live in Washington state. You are young. Build memories. That piece of land will make you also build character. If you make it through the winter , next spring you will be a sourdough. Good luck.

Well first, congrats on reaching 10,000 subscribers, and accomplishing so much in such a short time. You've come a long way since arriving at your snow covered property and having a drive way that resembled some more like a creek when the thaw came. You weathered some difficult moments that most people would have thrown in the towel. It speaks to the great determination, the fortitude, the belief in yourselves, the ability to work out the problems, and your overall character. To answer the question 'do you feel that you made the right decision', you'll have see how you can handle the long winters and 18 hours of darkness. I believe that you will. You are an awesome couple and have become one of our favorite off griders. We pray that you'll be able to have a well dug on the property. Take care and God bless. Not sure if yall are buying water from the trapper creek water point, but if yall don't know there is a water point just north of sheeps creek lodge. Its the east side turn off after the construction but on the construction side. There are some steps. It supposedly doesn't freeze over and gets tested multiple times a year. Some people get pumps and pump the water into tanks or drums in the back of the truck.

Love the simplicity and long form of what's happening-sure maybe some could be trimmed down, but then again it's peaceful and cathartic, just like being out in a remote location with total freedom to do what you want. Loved the intro and sharing about what led to the decision to do this, it was very retable and inspiring for me that y'all just did it. I find myself sitting at home really wanting to do more fantasizing about what life could be unshackled from a 9-5. I will be tuning in for more to come. Idea: please invest in the kind of communication device people who live or travel in the wilderness have for emergencies that you can use without internet etc to alert authorities you need help. Especially for serious illness and for emergency rescue like having 15 feet of snow or an animal attack or your and heating, water, food , housing fail and it’s -30 before the wind chill. Do you have snowshoes? Do you have top notch winter clothing and boots? An option is to NOT do this winter in the woods but get an apartment and jobs in town and start again next spring? Sorry your inexperience is very clear and people in your position have died in Alaska in the winter and found when the snow melts. Please please please take care. God bless.

Guys I saw a of grid (not in Alaska) they built a screened in gazebo and have wash lines so they can dry even if it rains, plus they can use as outdoor kitchen and for you it would be a great safe play area for a toddler. Just a thought
