Cooking Clutches - R15 clutch upgrade for YZFR125. Attempt #2

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Ok wow I've been working on this upgrade & video for months now - so it's great to finally get it finished.
This is my step by step journey to upgrading the clutch on my YZF-R125 to the larger, stronger one used on the YZF-R15 (international version, 150cc standard), which is then further upgraded with a clutch boss with 6 uprated springs (vs 4 standard) which claims it can hold 2x as much power as the standard R15 clutch.
This was not a straightforward journey, but that's more because there was no documentation I could find on what was actually needed so had to trial-and-error my way through it. Hopefully if you're thinking of doing anything similar then this might smooth that path a little.
The end result though, is that it works, there's absolutely no clutch slip and I don't see there being any for a while yet. The lever action is much heavier now but then I also have a 1-finger lever on it which isn't helping, plus there's easy-pull kits and stuff to be had if needed.
Assuming you have all the parts and tools needed, this upgrade shouldn't really be that difficult. The only "custom" bit needed was the washer grinding to fit on the 6-spring clutch boss, and that only needed a grinder to shape it a little.
I've put a few hundred km on it since making this video and thus far it's worked very well and I'm happy with the upgrade :)
Big shout out to Motogaga and SX Parts for their help with finding the right parts! without that I'd have been pretty much stuck. Thank you :D

Dude thanks for your previous video on how too replace the clutch on the r125, I've just burnt out mine (I think we'll actually I hope haha). Dumb ass me thought hey maybe cos it's a little wet I'll try and get that back wheel to spin, nope. I've just spent my whole afternoon pushing my bike home so I won't do that again, EVER

hmm get it to spin like a burnout or like drifting? I've only done a couple of burnouts on the R125 and it seems to be mostly about throwing all your weight forward so it lightens the back wheel and breaks loose.. then stay on the front brak and the power. It's not terribly impressive though so you've not missed much ;) Drifting is almost easier because you can start wiht the rear brake like initiating with ebrake in a car and then try to feed the power in. I'd suggest learning that on a slightly loose (e.g. dry dirt) surface though rather than in the wet necessarily. It's also softer than tarmac when you land on it ;) If you have a stock R125 you shouldn't need to do this clutch upgrade, but I don't regret doing it for the 180.

Brilliant video, thank you. I find myself in the same situation, wanting to upgrade the clutch but zero information out there and no one's able to offer advice between R15 and R125. My r125 is a track bike, what are your thoughts on this upgrade along with the slipper clutch option? You also mention a new primary gear with it not going into neutral, was that replaced as part of the upgrade (balancer?)? Thanks again

    >> Brilliant video, thank you. thank you :) >> what are your thoughts on this upgrade along with the slipper clutch option? I'm afraid I do't really know much about slipper clutches or why I'd need one, or whether there even is a slipper option for one on the R125. The old clutch was slippy enough ;o) >> was that replaced as part of the upgrade (balancer?) the R15 has a bigger clutch basket and (i think) that's got the "primary driven gear"(?) attached to to the back of it, so yes that got replaced when i put the bigger R15 clutch basket on. I do remember the neutral was a bit sticky on the first start but there was no issues after that and that might just have been random or from me messing with it. I just checked and sxparts still have the ebay listing up for the basket and clutch plates etc! Having had that setup for a couple of years now, that clutch upgrade was one of the best things I did to that old engine - such positive engagement which the stock clutch just doesn't have. It's quite a heavy pull especially as I have a short 1 finger lever but it's just so crisp. It's surprising how much just a slightly bigger clutch (and 2 more springs) will make. I'll be transferring that setup to the new motor once the break-in miles are done. If you need even more grip you may be able to get a clutch basket for a FZ150i and pair that with a matching 6-spring boss for a FZ150i from motogaga, that's essentially the same as the R15 setup I made but uses 5 plates instead of 4. Honestly though the current setup is pretty damn good and I wasn't entirely sure it would fit in the casing so I'm not in a real hurry to do that. hope that helps :)

@@NorthCust Hi, thanks for taking the time to reply. It sure does help! That is great to hear, especially since I couldn't wait from excitement at seeing this, I went and already placed an order for basket, friction/clutch plates and slipper clutch which comes with springs and lock washer. I also purchased a short ratio transmission as mine is for the track. Information like this is impossible to find, as you mentioned in your video. I also love that you put the Power Commander maps and great investigative detail on your website, thank you. I have taken one of the maps, overlaid it onto the original ECU fuel map and flashed that back to bike, the difference is overwhelming. My final complete engine build will be R15 slipper clutch, vertex high compression piston, race cam, race flywheel , big valve head. Unfortunately, everything will remain 125cc to meet race regs.

I’m currently doing a 180 Athena bore on mine it has stock crank and cam. Has a Remus exhaust and the kit comes with ecu and all what other bits do you recommend getting to keep the engine stable

Hey also how much of a difference is there with that 180 kit on it. I've got one sitting around cos it was included when I bought my bike and I'm tossing Wether to bite the bullet ( or in my case spend the money) and slap it on with a power commander or just put up with it and buy a bigger bike

  • @NorthCust

imho if you just want to go faster then a bigger bike will almost certainly get you more speed for your money for a lot less hassle. The crappiest 600 will still waste any R125 in most situations. In my case I got that bike from my friend who later died so for me it's about *that* specific bike, rather than just going faster. Also "just slap on a power commander".. yeah, hate to say it but there's a bit more to it than that if you actually want it to work well. The issue seems to be that ppl forget you need to somehow find out what values need to go into the PCV which means it either needs dyno tuning (~£200) or you need another way like a wideband o2 + autotune module for your PCV (~£250 and requires tig welding a bung in your exhaust). Though props for acknowledging that the fuelling needs adjusting..I still get a lot of emails from people who just put a 180 kit on and then wonder why it runs like crap if at all A while back I did an interview with Dynojet (who make the PCVs) on this very subject, you migh tfind some useful stuff in there: northcust.co.uk/2021/04/interview-with-dynojet-in-detail-on-power-commanders/ As for the 180cc kit, it was expensive and kinda a pain in the ass to get it running right but now it it I really like it. I'm writing this now a couple of years after fitting it and with 5-6k miles on the 180 and for me it's about right. Much faster and I'd end up getting into trouble ;)

@NorthCust I was generalising when I said slap it on with a power commander, I'm well aware it's not plug and play as the fella I bought it from is my mechanic and he told me that if I want to install I'll need to put it on their dyno

@NorthCust thanks for the reply, man. I was just being a bit of a dickhead on my bike when I tried to do a burnout. I shouldn't be trying to do one, to be honest, as it's left me not being able to ride my baby for 2 weeks. I'm not sure I've actually burnt out my clutch after thinking about it. I may have just stretched the cable as when I took off the clutch engaged but felt as though I had the clutch lever pulled in a bit as I could accelerate, though it revved out when I gave it more than a little bit of throttle

Can I ask how did you install an oil pressure gauge? And where did you tap into to get into the oil ect. Thanks

  • @NorthCust

    @NorthCust

    4 жыл бұрын

If you mean the extra gauge that's actually an extra temperature gauge. Its one of the little koso inline sensors and is plumbed in on the left hand hose which comes from the radiator. The gauge is really bad though, the needle dances around the whole time. I've got a slimline digital one coming to replace it soon..just waiting.. Details here: northcust.co.uk/2020/03/10/fitting-an-extra-temperature-gauge-to-the-yzf-r125/ If you did want to fit an oil pressure gauge there's a 10mm bolt on the corner of the head where you check for oil pressure. You could tap in there if careful.
