I’m half Hawaiian and lived in Kauai for 15 of my 40 years….never in my life had tuna in my macaroni salad 🤨

My childhood best friend was born and raised in Oahu and the family is Filipino and that’s how they always made their tuna salad also.

I was gonna say... my family's mac salad has always had tuna and I've assumed that's the "american" way my whole life lol the mac salad at Hawaiian bros def doesn't have tuna in it 😂

Hawai’i Mac salad doesn’t have added vinegar, other than what’s in the mayonnaise! And yes, we use hellmans/ best foods mayo!

For you all commenting "Isn't Hawaii part of America?" Yes she said she's in this series she is making recipes from "around the WORLD". She intro'd the series accurately. Hawaii and Ohio not in the same location on the globe. Therefore, it is a different part of the world.

The Hawaiian macaroni salads I've had are sometimes made with Kewpie mayo.

I’ve lived in Michigan my entire life and macaroni salad is elbow noodles, celery, onion and canned tuna with garlic, pepper, salt, dill, hard boiled egg and mayo!

I am lucky to get decent Hawaiian Mac salad & other HI classics here on the northern plains! Surprisingly, Montana is very popular among Hawaiians who move to the Western & Northern hemispheres. And we get food influences from the loads of students from US Pacific territories & places like the Federated States of Micronesia who have special status - our out of state tuition is low in my city especially & after schools started recruiting Samoan football players, the Oceania - Montana pipeline was established. We don’t have a Hawaiian restaurant anymore, but for 30 years had an exceptional fusion Hawaiian & Montana fine dining place that always started with the spam sushi (musubi?) and I got brownie points with the chef for recognizing lomi lomi..,going to miss that place so much!!! His Mac salad was incredible, midwestern style is gross gross gross!

As an Aussie- can I suggest Pavlova or “damper” (a dense bread usually eaten with golden syrup and butter or jam and cream🥰

Nope my moms macaroni salad is the best. Helmans Mayo is the best and she used roasted chicken with chopped red onions , a little sugar,salt and pepper, White wine vinegar and cold green peas. So freaking good! We ate all summer long.

Sorry but I’m going to be “that girl” Hellmans is not a thing in HI! Is called Best Foods. You can thank the Hellmans brothers from years ago for fighting that out LOL. It is the same thing divided by a giant river mid USA

I make my own recipe macaroni salad. Macaroni, red onion, frozen peas & carrots. 4 strips of crispy bacon, 2 cups of shredded cheese (I use Colby Jake) 😊 Hellmans, a couple of TLB spoons of Ranch seasoning salt & pepper to taste. I always make it a day ahead, it’s just better that way. Enjoy!!

I love Hawaiian Mac salad. I’ve never had it with the tuna though. When I visit our local Hawaiian BBQ restaurant there, macaroni salad does not have the tuna in it. All my town keeps putting in mexican restaurants. Sorry we're not a big town but can we please bring some variety back. Reminds me of tuna casserole. I learned a tip cook your pasta, drain mix it with some heavy cream or half and half put in the fridge for a few hours or overnight. Then mix with your other ingredients. This keeps the macaroni from sucking up all your sauce and drying out.

I believe that Hawaiian pasta salad is supposed to have sugar in it. It’s supposed to be sweet and without the tuna. Or at least I thought 😬🤷🏼‍♀️. I may be wrong!

That recipe is similar to one of ours but instead of tuna onion and carrots we put shredded chicken peas and corn and pickles with a little bit chicken broth and lemon juice

If its just for me and daughter i might put chopped up radishes and chopped up hard boiled egg in too. Clean the fridge mac salad dinner lol

Call BS, kewpie mayonnaise although Japanese - is very popular in Hawaii and while it is one of the only mayonnaise brands that does not use sugar [mayo shouldn’t have sugar]…they use MSG which is actually awesome. Feel bad for ignorant ppl who don’t understand chemistry / the fact they judge msg and attribute all kinds of factitious disordered conditions to its consumption. if you eat bolognese sauce, mushrooms, or parmesan cheese - you’re consuming glutamates - NO MSG = EEEEEMOTIONAL DAMAGE.

Here in the south we use that box pasta salad ranch stuff and add tuna oh and extra peas

According to americas test kitchen Hawaiian pasta salad has sugar and milk in it and no tuna. But I’m sure there’s more than one. Yours looks tasty. I would try it but grating carrots is a no for me. I’m way too lazy for that.

It is not Hawaiian. We don’t have pasta or mayo. You can sit down. Mac salad is American. Absolutely not a Hawaiian dish. Not even Hawaiian Barbecue is Hawaiian. We actually have indigenous food that is Hawaiian. And not many tourist or Americans have eaten actual Hawaiian food.

Im 1/2 Hawaiian, my Tūtū wahine grew up there. This is how she made it, except with some sugar. Everyone does things differently. So not really sure which part you lived in, but she lived in Makaha Valley. So if you aren’t even Hawaiian, don’t speak for all of us. Thanks. Miss my Tūtū.

Yes it’s very Hawaiian … they love it. You will find it in a lot of smaller towns. They are not going to serve it at the resort or at the restaurants around d the resort trying to get your money.

Mac Salad did not originate in Hawaii. The Germans made Macaroni first with the mayo and trimmings. After that each culture made its own kind using the Germans version as the base.

For y’all saying HELLMAN’S and BestFoods Mayo are the same recipe…THEY AIN’T ` n BF’s mayo is the superior mayo…

This is true but the cultures are wildly different due to the different people that mainly live there. Hawaii has many more asian influences compared to the midwest region of America (I’m assuming she lives here)

The American Mac salad is not as good as Hawaiian because you used dukes and not Hellman’s lol

Ashley🎉 you forgot to add small shrimp and peas and some people will add crispy 🥓 bacon but I never do I'm a pescatarian. however I love the shrimp and peas If you try it, you will never eat it any other way again. My wife adores this dish I have to make it for every barbecue. She marks the first day of summer as the start of macaroni season because I refuse to make it in the winter months. I know too much information😂❤. But please Just try it with all the ingredients
