That is how we always cooked our roast when we went on scout camps. That is the first time I have seen someone else cook that way in fifty years. [YES half a century ago] Very impressive. Great result. Wayne from Regional Victoria, Australia

This is a common cooking method (umu) in the Cook Islands (hangi) in New Zealand, only difference is quantity. When you cook for the family and extended family you can imagine how much meat (a whole pig the norm) and vegetables are put in the umu, cooking times can be between 4 and 12 hours. I cannot imagine doing what you did, that is a lot of work for 1 steak but totally agree, it is worth it (similar to a slow oven bake). Well done :-)

I could have done with a steak. I went for a long walk today and I am now very hungry. I watched this while my salmon and baked potato are cooking in my oven! I also found my French Laguiole knife which I have had since I was your age. Strange that I never thought of looking for it in my kitchen drawer! I will have to try Jon Thorner's, my local farm shop, to see whether they have these steaks. Dinner awaits!!!

@@GirlOutdoors No thank you! Because of you, your sister and your dad, I actually began wild camping, because of the whole lockdowns, people got scared of meeting face to face, I was on furlough for quite some time, and I was looking to do something exciting, I used to watch a lot of movies, play games, but I got bored and had to find something else, at first "wild camping" channels from the USA and Canada began to pop up in my recoomendation list, and after few weeks I actually realized hey, maybe there are some people in the UK who do the same thing, and Lo and Behold, your channel popped up as one of, if not as the first one... You got me convinced, I began this year wild camping on 1st of Janury (2021) and after first camping, I guess this will be my long time hobby. To get away from society to amazing places around the UK. The good thing is that I got a car so that I can move easily. Which makes it even more exciting. :D

Reminds me of something we did in Australia years ago, couple of kiwi's in the place and we cooked everything underground for about 12 people, was a traditional Maori cooking method, was called hungy or something, probably spelt that wrong. Was about 6-8 hours cooking so we were well lashed by the time it was done haha. Nice to see you trying this out, looks like reasonable soil where you are :-)

Good Nz morning Becky. So in the Pacific Islands it's called an umu. (Oomoo) and down here in Nz it's called a hangi (hungi) and never say it with the hard "g" as in good grief. Someone has already suggested kumara (sweet potato.) The fat is where the flavour lies. Normally we leave salt out of the meat. It tends to dry it out during cooking. Add it later. Just curious. How long was it underground.? Whatever, that looked brilliant. Well done. Excuse the pun. Heck Becky as soon as our borders open again, you'll just have to come down here and try a hangi. You'll pick up some great ideas, you'll learn some Maori words. You can bring your whanau (family) with you. Again thank you for sharing. Cheers. And take care.

As there wasn’t any leaves around, could you not have wrapped the steak in the moss off the stone it was sat on ?

If you do some small cuts into the meat and rub the garlic into your steak, the taste gets even more intense. Very good against vampires! ;-)
