Does it work to use an audio transformer to convert balanced to single ended?

Thanks, you know what works better than signs? A simple door closer. Would never have to worry about that door again. Love your videos

You didn’t explain what issue there is in simply using signal and ground off an xlr to create single ended.

The way to keep that door shut is to get one of those devices over the door that slowly close it :D

Hi Paul and fellow people watching. Is a devices like ART DTI (that one is passive) or ART CleanBox Pro (this one is active) good for this transforming from XLR to RTA? Not only for the purpose itself, but also to keep the quality of the sound. Thanks!

question related to transformers; Is a transformer better the bigger it is? And/or while I was thinking about transformers in signal processing circuits I wondered if a smaller cannister transformer would outperform the larger square metal plate transformers. Is it ever possible for a smaller transformer to outperform the duty of a bigger transformer in an audio circuit?

A more precisely, i.e. tightly wound transformer from high-quality sheet metal or wire, may be smaller and lighter. It's going to be more noticeable in e.g. a tube amp output transformer than a small coupling transformer as discussed in this video. Transformers may be soaked and encapsulated in cans, cast (soaked) in epoxy resin etc. There are different designs etc. They may use different materials etc. The relation between size and quality isn't as direct as it may at first appear.

If the audio interfaced isn't balanced, then yes, you can use xlr to rca adaptors. If it is balanced, then you may, or may not be able to use adaptors. There's more than one way to do things. You should be able to download the owners for the audio interface. It will definitely tell you what needs to be done, if anything, when you have to connect a single ended component to it.

Is it even safe to run XLR output (DAC, pre-amp) into RCA input (amplifier) by just shorting one of the XLR wires to ground?

Howdy. I would suggest doing the adapting using good quality Operational Amplifiers. I suggest using two 9 V dry cells to power them to completely eliminate hum pickups. Regards.

  • @andydelle4509

I agree with Paul on this one. But one think to keep in mind is that a transformer cannot produce POWER gain. It can produce voltage gain at the expense of primary current but it cannot output more power than it was initially fed. This is probably not an issue hooking up sub woofers but in a professional setting this could be a problem where the unbalanced to balanced side needs to produce professional +4db levels into a legacy 600ohm load. The unbalanced consumer gear simply does not output enough audio voltage and current to produce those levels on the transformer secondary. So in that case you still need an additional gain stage on the consumer device. Also transformers need to be terminated into a fairly narrow range resistive load or they can ring. I know Jensen provides that data and so should any respected audio transformer manufacture. Honestly the best bet would be to go with active converters. With today's technology, the minuscule sonic defects they induce are not audible nor do they care about impedance matching.

I dont get difference between taking both signals together through a centre tapped resistor and using a transformer,, which connects them together anyway through the winding-only this route adds inductance,

Paul, for the signs to have any value, someone in authority needs to put them up, and sign their name to them. Non management personnel can try to have people respect their wishes. But for the sign to serve a meaningful purpose, someone in management must be attached to the sign. Those signs are hung up by Mr. or Mrs. anonymous. So of course few people will care. Or, if it is only one person that does not care, there is nothing the other rank and file personnel can do. The above lends to a frustrating work environment for the people that need that door to remain closed. Paul, that you know that the door should be left closed, and you do not enforce that as a policy, is bad management on your part. And to laugh about it is terrible. Please do not look at that sign issue as a joke. You have people in your employ who see it as a serious issue. If that noise and temperature issue were interfering with your meetings and your personal office work, etc, I doubt that you would brush it off. Do not laugh at the frustration of the "peons" in your office. Treat them as you would want to be treated in their shoes. Support them, if their requests are proper, responsible, and helpful. As the CEO of the company, you could fix the problem with a wave of your hand. But instead, you choose to bask in the frustration of your employees. Not good.

Paul if you have employees working for you and they can't abide by a simple sign you probably have some more significant issues elsewhere in your company. I'd lay down the hammer versus laugh about it on a video. Something tells me there is some beef between the engineering department and the warehouse.
