    Looking good Brian. That portable spray booth is enormous. I saw you had the ceiling mounted garage door openers. I installed the sidewinders in my garage. They’re made by lift master. They mount to the overhead door track attached to the header. You gain a bunch of ceiling clearance. Enjoy your day.

    I was excited to see this video. I've been looking at buying one of these... but larger. I painted my corvette (79) in my shop last year. I used PVC to build a frame then stretched tarps over & under it. I built a plywood wall/box 10ft tall and 12ft wide. I mounted 2 x 8000 cfm fans blowing into the box with MERV 8 filters covering the inside of the wall. I mounted 30 x 4ft LED light fixtures. Put big zippers on the back "Door" which had a 2ft x 8ft hole covered with layers of screen and cheese cloth. I ran positive pressure. Got decent results but was wondering if a booth like this one might work better. I spent about $1000 on that project. I'm looking at a 30x20x13 with internal dimensions of 24.5x17x12 and wondering if that is big enough to paint my projects... I have a 64 Chevelle, 65 Corvette, 01 Z/28 and an 89 GMC Truck I'm going to paint. I have a 40x80 shop but just work on personal projects. The 79 Corvette was my first car to paint... technically, it was the first 4 cars I ever painted :) I've owned most the 2 vettes and Chevelle about 30 years. The Z28 since 2003 and my dad bought the GMC new--I bought it from my mom about 10 years ago. I watched a bunch of your videos before I decided I could paint the 79. Thanks for giving me the knowledge and confidence to try it.

    I have a 26’X16’ that I have painted 3 cars in. If you get one, DONT use the mixing room. You have to be SUPER careful not to bump the walls or you knock loose the overspray that has stuck to them and the ceiling. When you unzip the door of the mixing room you might as well throw a handful of sand on the hood. You can’t just cut the wall out and use the extra space for painting because you loose the filtration system for the ventilation system. Otherwise, it is a great solution. My shop is 24’X40’ and I have plenty of room to set it up. Thanks for the great video.

    I’ve painted huge jobs in my inflatable paint booth and the biggest thing that has helped is putting filters on the side of blowers and the outlet of the blowers. I do the same with the inside of the booth where you have the little slots for the air coming in, and I have filters on the inside of the booth and out side I duct tape more filters. Now I don’t have the elephant trunk but I rigged up a stand to put 2 box fans on each side of the exhaust filters. And the results I’ve gotten have been honestly amazing. The first couple of complete paint jobs I did I wasn’t to happy but once I started adding more filters and exhaust fans man the difference has been amazing . Oh and cleaning the booth suck so I do my best and I always tack off the inside of the booth before painting anything.

    Make sure you have more than enough paint to do the job and have extra when your done. Whatever spray gun you use, use the same spray gun write down the gun set up. If you close or open the fan one turn write it down , if you use a dark sealer or light sealer write it down. If your last coat of base coat is 25psi or 20psi for air pressure write it down. If you do all these things and don’t run out of paint you shouldn’t have no problems making your panels match as long as you use the same batch of paint.

    Hey Brian. When it comes to painting interior plastics, after scuffing the plastics and using adhesion promoter, is it ok to use a basecoat on top of the adhesion promoter, or should a regular primer be used on top of the promoter before a base coat?

  • @michaelb4060

    @michaelb4060

    7 ай бұрын

    In case Brian doesn't have a chance to get back to you I will provide some non-paint society info. Basecoat adheres to painted surfaces, either primer or scuffed clearcoat or scuffed basecoat if it has past the top coating window. It may adhere to the plastic with adhesion promoter, but may not be durable long term. Your best bet is a 2K primer after adhesion promoter, which means it is 2 part. Primer and an activator or catalyst which causes a chemical reaction for the primer to solidify. Some cheaper 1K or ready to spray primers can absorb the solvents in the basecoat and soften showing up as surface defect or even as bad as a wrinkled surface. The 2K primer will not absorb the solvents of the basecoat as long as you follow the TDS for minimum wait time before top coating and less than the maximum time otherwise you will need to sand or scuff the primer. Brian has some videos showing aerosol cans with a plug in the bottom you have to push into the can to rupture a bladder holding the catalyst then shake it to mix the catalyst with the primer or clear in the rest of the can. Those are a good option for primer and clearcoat if you do not have a spray gun and compressor with a system to get clean dry air. They tend to be a little expensive ~$30 for a few ounces you get in an aerosol can. You can get a quart of 2k for maybe $50 and spray a much bigger area. I hope this helps.

  • @The513Warning

    @The513Warning

    @@michaelb4060 You definitely answered a few questions for me. I'm trying to absorb as much info as possible, but there are just as many outliers and variables too. I am aware of the 2K clear coat and primer. I've got a couple cans of 2K clear for a future project that I've got. Is there a really good painting book out there? I love Brian, but sometimes he can get a little long-winded and throw out too much info at once.

  • @michaelb4060

    @michaelb4060

    7 ай бұрын

    @@The513Warning I am not aware of any good books on painting so I cannot help you there. After watching many videos, I tried spraying silver on a bumper cover a few years back and it was absolutely hideous. I had the air pressure set to 23psi, which was on the gun as a max setting. Many guns in videos are set to 28-30 psi so I thought 23 was the right pressure. The paint was drying in the air then landing on the bumper leaving a very grainy and 3 dimensional or rough surface under the clear. Brian and other painters are super skilled with painting and provide a lot of information, however being new at it I did not know the subtleties of the process. Sure I can hold the gun and move it somewhat smoothly and consistently, but I do not know what the paint on the panel should look like as it lands, what I am doing wrong, or how to correct it. Brian makes it look so easy and effortless. I decided to take some classes at a local community college, which have helped immensely. The hands on training and being able to ask the instructor what am I doing wrong and getting the direct feedback is invaluable. I am getting better, but I still have a long way to go. If you are using aerosol cans it may be more difficult to spray larger panels or areas. I couldn't do it with aerosol cans. I also struggled with a cheaper gun, because I do not have the skill like Brian to know how to work a cheaper gun to get good results. I bought DeVilbiss DV1 base and clear guns at a little over $700 each, which drastically improved my results. Paint is expensive and I have a few projects so I decided it was worth the investment to avoid having to repaint. I can get okay results with my cheaper DeVilbiss gun, but not as good as the DV1's.

    I've used base over the top of adhesion promoter without ossue many times. Technically tho u should prep the plastic substrate, adhesion promote it, then seal it, and then base it. This is the best/most efficient way, going wet on wet with the sealer to base (after flash tike for sealer ofcourse) and avoids having to wait for primer to dry and then be reprepped b4 base. I've been a professional automotive refinisher my entire career, fwiw.

    All that money spent, and you don't have side-mounted garage door openers.

    Once again i will say it again. I dont have room for a side mount. Where the garage ends the wall sits flush. Thank you

    To paint one car the cost doesnt make sense. If you are in the business of painting cars at home then sure 100%

    Not reality! Reality where I live in Oregon is a 1000 square foot pole barn with a plastic curtain. Also that garage is way too clean for a real car guy. Where did you do the body work? This is a commercial to sell these crappy spray booths. Funny how people think if they buy enough stuff the job will get done. Just go do it. Hang some plastic, get a couple of good fans , use base coat clear coat system and have fun. You don’t need all this BS to build a nice car. Odds are this booth is not going to make any difference
