Converting a Swimming Pool to Grow Fish

Here we have a lap pool that's full of silverfish - an aquatic system. And we've got a vegetable garden surrounding it. The whole idea is to build a system that's productive because aquaculture is the most productive system there is because what we're growing in an aquaculture system doesn't have to stand up and hold it's weight against gravity, so we haven't fed the fish at all that are in the pool.

About Geoff:
Geoff is a world-renowned permaculture consultant, designer, and teacher. He has established permaculture demonstration sites that function as education centers in all the world’s extreme climates - information on the success of these systems is networked through the Permaculture Research Institute and the www.permaculturenews.org website.
About Permaculture:
Permaculture (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Permacu...) integrates land, resources, people and the environment through mutually beneficial synergies - imitating the no waste, closed loop systems seen in diverse natural systems. Permaculture applies holistic solutions that are applicable in rural and urban contexts and at any scale. It is a multidisciplinary toolbox including agriculture, water harvesting and hydrology, energy, natural building, forestry, waste management, animal systems, aquaculture, appropriate technology, economics, and community development.

I'm buying a place that has a saltwater swimming pool and and am wondering....does anyone here have experience with cleaning all the salt out to make a non-toxic freshwater system? Would I need to scrub the salt off the pool before adding freshwater, or would it work just to drain the saltwater out and refill with fresh?

Hi Bree. I do some service on salt pools. The fastest way is to drain and refill. You shouldn't need to scrub it down or anything too intense. Once you dilute the residual salt and get the biology working for you, you'll be in a great place.
