Convert your pool into a pond | DIY Garden Projects | Gardening Australia

Ойын-сауық

Ever thought of turning your chlorinated pool in to a natural pond? Michael Gillings, a passionate professor of biology at Sydney's Macquarie University has done just that! Michael Gillings: "Almost 12% of households in Australia have swimming pools - about 1.2 million pools. To maintain a pool costs $2000+ per year. If you swim twice a week in spring and summer, that's $40/swim!"
FEATURED SPECIES
2:36 COMMON NARDOO Marsilea drummondii
SWAMP HIBISCUS Hibiscus coccineus 'Alba'
3:20 BLACK TARO Colocasia esculenta 'Black Magic'
RAINBOWFISH Melanotaenia sp.
4:15 HOW TO ... AVOID INTRODUCING MOSQUITO FISH, GAMBUSIA HOLBROOKI
The mosquito fish are introduced pests that Michael calls 'the cane toads of fresh water'. They eat native fish and invertebrates and don't even eat mosquitoes!
NOTE: If you get a plant from a nursery, quarantine it in a bucket for at least two weeks to prevent adding Gambusia and/or weeds to your water garden.

I had one of those water dragons hanging around my pool a few years ago. It was a very large male , and it used to take food out of my hand. Beautiful creatures, as long as you are not a smaller lizard because you are likely to get gobbled up.

Hi great video. I live in BC Canada on the Sunshine Coast on the Ocean. I have a pond under our entrance of our modern house that looks like a lap pool. I would like to make it into a natural oasis that I or the dog could have a quick dip in as well. The previous owners said they tried fish but then the River Otters came (from the ocean) I don't want to attract them. Do you have suggestions for me? Thanks for sharing. :)
