    I not sure what your saying is true? Put an amp meter on when you are going slow and it will show you are no where near using the same amount of power as the full setting. Yes your correct in power been lost to heat in the coils but no where near the amount you suggest. The PWM's create a fair bit of heat too. I would love to see a amp reading on two identical setups one with PWM and one without to see just what the gain actually is

    At the various setting (1 thru 4) you are not "using 100% of the motor's capacity", eg 80%/20% split at setting 1, 60%/40%. IF that were true the Current flow out of the battery would be the same no matter what setting is chosen; which simply isn't the case. Yes speed coils are essentially low value resistors in series with the motor that do waste power, but you're not "using 100% of the motor's" rated capacity (Wattage), at all settings because the series resistors limit the amount of current flow out of the battery. At setting 1 the Power consumption is much less than 100% of the motor's rated capacity. So while the 80%/20% split may be accurate, it's not 80% of the motor's rated capacity that's being wasted as heat across the #1 speed coil. Know what mean?

    Although using a PWM is more efficient, you exaggerate how inefficient the 5 speed is. You make it sound like you draw just as many amps on the lower speeds as you do for full throttle and the resistor disapates the difference when in fact, the amp draw is far less at lower throttle settings.

    So, just wondering how we know the motor is using 100% of the power, just sending 20% to the motor and the rest as heat. Watching other vids of people measuring amp draw at different speeds, low speed sees about 7 amps, and high sees about 25 amps.

    This is a great explanation. Could you explain to me about the maximum amps the motor can draw? Like can we put 300 amps into it with a 300 amp PWM? Is it the pwm pushing amps into it or the motor drawing amps through the PWM from battery?

  • @DanHiteshew-oneandonly

    @DanHiteshew-oneandonly

    4 жыл бұрын

    Most motors won't draw more than 50 amps (I think my 30 lb draws about 25 under load). The amps come from the draw on the motor, so the PWM has to be able to handle the current flowing through it. Usually you should stay below 80% capacity so as to not overheat the unit. I get an oversized unit so even if I miscalculate, I leave myself tons of room for error and know the PWM will be able to easily handle any load my motor draws.

  • @yeslawrence

    hey cool upgrade but the part at the beginning where you explain how the OE speed controller works doesn't make sense to me - it sounds like you are saying all speed settings draw the same amount current from the battery, so like speed setting one draws the same current as speed setting 5, but just that 80% of the current is dissipated as heat in speed setting 1. That hasn't been my experience, when using a DC clamp meter to measure current coming from the battery, at the lower speed settings less current is drawn from the battery, and at the higher speed settings more current is being drawn. For reference my tests were done done on a minn kota 36 and a newport vessel 86 What am I missing?

    You say the variable speed is possible as they dump power into a resistance wire. I’m wondering where you get that info from? I have been researching this for a year now as I too have changed to a PWM controller on a Watersnake and wantEd to know the same on this motor, but I haven’t been able to find an answer other than just assertions.I figure it’s possible they could use different motor windings to get the variable speeds which I assume wouldn’t be wasteful of battery energy then. BTW I use model radio control gear using a Brushed ESC and servo tester, this is so small (easily fits in the motor head) and cheap - and I’ve had this in operation for over 100hours with no problems yet.

    Most "dimmer switches" are for AC, not DC. Try looking up "Speed Controller" or 12v speed controller, and be sure to go above 20 kHZ and be sure the sustained amperage is high enough.
