Welcome to our new series, Conversation With Artists!
In this series, ArtResin’s co-founder Rebecca provides an opportunity to hear from different contemporary resin artists as they discuss their work, inspiration and the artistic process.
In today’s episode, Rebecca is in conversation with "the guy who makes blob paintings", Toronto artist Mike Hammer.
Mike’s blob paintings are gorgeous - fun, candy-coloured, layered circles that look good enough to eat. He ended up with the blob after years spent trying to develop his own unique methods of paint application. Settling on the squeeze bottle as his tool of choice, Mike experimented with paint and technique until his blobs were perfect.
Textured and vibrant, the blobs allow Mike to create non-representational works of art: his paintings are abstract, based on visual elements and technique rather than concept or commentary.
Take a peek to hear Mike discuss the place of the blob in his artwork, his struggles and his 3 step painting process.

I love this guy. I totally agree about art school. I'm 60 and never seriously did any serious art in my life, but I've always been very color and shape oriented and crafty. My mother is a pretty brilliant artist, though no one ever knew except the family. I'm starting to sell various pieces in consignment shops and it's the best feeling in the entire world! I love his blobs! Oh, I love Art Resin, too. Let's just go there.

I love this conversation format. I think I like it better than the featured artist video you did of him. It's almost like a podcast. Feels more personable and real. I could watch an hour video like this easily. More please! 😃

Is he using paint or paint and resin for his blobs.....does he pant with paint and then cover the painting in resin. Resin has such a short work time I'm not understanding how he keeps containers of resin mixed with paint on his shelves and can reach for them and use as he needs them? I have been experimenting with resin in my painting and I have to work so quickly as it becomes thicker and cures so quickly. Thanks for any clarification you can give...and his work is amazing!

Hi Renee - great question! Mike creates his blobs with paint first, and then covers the paintings in ArtResin after they've dried. If you forward to 5:35 in the video, you can see him mixing up his ArtResin and then pouring it over his painting. ArtResin has a working life of 40 mins approximately - you can mix up small amounts as you need it if that helps ... same principal applies whether you mix 1 oz, 10 oz or 100 oz ... equal amounts of resin and hardener and mix for 3 mins, scraping the bottom and sides. Glad you enjoyed the video - Mike's work is so beautiful!!

He mentions "his paint." Does he add something to acrylic paint to somehow thicken it to keep it from running? Thanks and super cute baby btw.
