Conversation with Kevin - The Basic Filmmaker Regarding Gear

In this week's live Sound for Video Session, we had a conversation with Kevin - The Basic Filmmaker - regarding filmmaking gear. He gives us some useful perspective.
If you’d like to learn how to make great dialogue audio for your film and video projects, please have a look at my courses including how to process dialogue audio in Adobe Audition and DaVinci Resolve/Fairlight, recording sound, how to use the Zoom F4, F8, and F8n, and how to get the most from the Sound Devices MixPre series of recorders: school.learnlightandsound.com

I have 1 mixer, 1 usb interface, 1 recorder and 3 microphones: 1 condenser, 1 law and 1 dynamic. I like how You both tend to learn your tools and utilize the full potential of them. I once had a cheap Casio keyboard and used to make quite good hip hop beats out of it, just because I knew every sound, trick and glitch of that keyboard. Usually I just try to emulate hi-end gear with cheap alternatives, because it is what I have.

Thank you. I really enjoyed this. Video is such a steep learning curve because it incorporates so many things into one thing and then it needs a sprinkle of creativity on top as well. So many things to think about and so many things to potentially go wrong. Being a mostly cheap gear person myself, I have often found myself trying to correct my ‘mistakes’ after shooting the video and that’s where some real learning can take place, whether it’s audio, lighting or picture quality. It’s those hard learned things that stick with you and transfer to better gear later, I think. Both Kevin and you, Curtis have great attitudes towards gear and I have to say that the two of you have had a huge impact on me including presentation skills as well. Also, the fact that both of you have always taken the time to show an interest in my problems and help by answering anything I asked without getting all ‘snooty’ about the gear! You have both spurred me on with the gear that I have into making better films and lessen the worry about what I’m using. The phone idea that Kevin mentioned is so true. In fact, it was Kevin that got me making a video on a phone, just to see what I could get with it. Again, another learning curve. Thank you both.

Some great points made by Curtis and Kevin in this conversation! I agree completely when one is simply spoiled for choice, one may simply end up being confused. Instead it is better to "squeeze the lemon till there is no more juice left". Which leads one to be more resourceful and innovative in the use of what one has. In fact that has made me 'jury-rig' my gear on so many occasions, to use an old nautical term! And then at the end of it all left with a sense of achievement. Which is nice.

I installed the Musician Plugin as well. I would also Love to see you or someone do a video explaining how to use the MixPre as an Audio Interface, Streaming, and Podcasting. I am also watching Curtis' MixPre videos as per your request. I did see the video with Curtis and his brother demonstrating the Musician Plugin. I have not even started my Video learning yet. Excellent points. Thanks, gentlemen. I can give an example where using the latest and greatest equipment is a hindrance, not an advantage. Being familiar with and comfortable with one's gear lets one concentrate on the subject matter. This is why I use two $200 six year old camcorders for my public content. I set them up the same way every time and then I am not distracted while I am executing the task at hand. How well I execute the task at hand determines the usefulness and value of the content, not so much how well it was videoed, after an acceptable threshold of video quality is reached. So now I know one camera has to be on manual focus and manual exposure and the other one can be left on auto, where the sound levels have to be, etc. I discovered that I didn't need wireless if I used a tiny Tascam DR-10L lav and body pack recorder for this (static) subject matter, so another piece of hardware was eliminated. I have tried a couple of times to replace my camcorders with my "good" equipment. The result was very high quality video of poor content! Recording time limits and battery life worries killed my ability to concentrate on the task at hand! The little camcorders and tiny recorder can run continuously and very reliably for over two hours without any attention, thus with minimal distraction. That is a big deal for a one man show, even when the final content may only be an 8 minute video. I definitely have personal family video applications where I need to use my "good" equipment. But my good gear is several years old and is not currently a limitation. That is the key for me. I don't shoot video professionally so my needs are limited. However, I am an engineer and am terribly interested in the latest and greatest technology, thus I contend with GAS every day. The solution for me is to watch KZread videos and on-line courses on generating and editing good content. (That's why I'm here.) Resist the One-Click button...until I have a problem to be solved, then I follow your advice and go all in for gear that I hope will hold me over for years, not months.

Poor battery life is a real plague of modern equipment. My recorder eats 4 AA batteries in under 5 hours, which may seem enough, but at location with 3/4 of power at the start I am a little nervous. It all ends with a huge external battery squid laying somewhere.

  • @LearnLightAndSoundSessions

Agreed that a camcorder is a much better tool for long-form event recording. Trying to use DSLRs for something like that creates several additional issues such as recording limits, recording audio independent of camera and then dealing with drift, etc.

Spot on, as always, gentlemen! When it comes to gear envy, take it from Mr. Springsteen: "Well I got this guitar and I "learned" how to make it talk." It's about the experience, the successes and failures, NOT the investment. Give a $10,000 Gibson to a new player, and he will suck. :-) Give him 10 years on the second hand guitar that he plays every night with blisters, and you got yourself a rock star!

Every time I open/close Skype, I have to make sure I fix my computer's recording volume because Skype always turns it up to 100% when it's calling. I'm sure they do it because most people don't also use their PCs for audio recording, but I wish they'd give us an option to disable that sort of thing and get better audio quality in calls.

Oh, Skype. The bane of my existence. I edit a lot of Skype captured audio and it's a pain. It will auto adjust the levels of the microphone systemwide. And the option to turn that off is a placebo. The only solution is to split the audio into a recorder AND the computer Skype is on so the recording on your end is untouched by Skype. If you drop the gain to battle Skype-induced clipping, it'll up the digital gain even more. It's also got a fondness for pulling up noise floors too. I've had many, many expletive filled rants about it.

I guess an isolated recorder external to the Skype computer is still the best solution after all. I'm sorry, Curtis, I don't know what to suggest.

You can do it in the front end or the back end. Up to you. Kind of a duh moment, but it has to do with who is the production for. Do you need or want incredible where more sensible is fine. If you are being paid, you get the most reliable your money can buy but economies of scale and understand where you want to go and get what you need later. Time is on your side. There is always a better recorder. So what??!! I agree, get out there make stuff. I have a DR-40 and a DR-100 Mk.3. Do I want a Sound Devices? Sure. But there are priorities. Also when time goes by maybe I can save and get a used one. I agree, use what you have and get good with it.

I also went from the H6 to the Mixpre 3. For me, it was about ease of use and quality of the end product. The H6 has one of the worst user interfaces I've ever experienced with a piece of production equipment.. from turning it on to extracting the files. I hated it, but used it for years. When trying to find something easier to use as well as something that is more "portable" for my sound stand, Mixpre 3 checked all the boxes; but there was a hiccup... after I realized the AA batteries only powered it for 27 minutes (LOL) - but then had to adapt and get more equipment to turn my portable sound stand into a V-mount powered sound stand with the bebob v-mount plate. Such is the life of a tech reviewer... G.A.S is strong.. now the new mixpre 3 mk 2 looks so amazing - but I don't think I'll actually need it, I am never going to be in a situation where I am clipping my audio.
