I was stationed at a B-58 wing & KC135 tankers. There was 1 incident in which a bailout was necessary. Every thing was cool until all 3 crew had chutes that didn't open. Another was an aircraft that lost both right engines at time of airborne. A friend in CSC told me that there was nothing left to find of the crew.

This escape system was also installed on the XB-70 Valkyrie and the X-15. It was actually used when one of the two Valkyrie prototypes collided with a chase plane and went down. For some reason the copilot failed to eject and was killed. The pilot did eject but it was only a partial success as the "deceleration bag" failed to deploy and he sustained severe back injuries.

The X-15 didn't use an escape-capsule it used an ejection-seat.

I went through ejection seat training in the US Army while assigned as an observer on the OV-1 Mohawk. I think I would prefer the standard ejection seat to this pod.

From what I heard from others as I never had to eject. The experience was fast and the alternative was worse! I did see a crew eject from their Mohawk, it had just come out of maintenance and was piloted by a civilian and a regular observer. It took off and about 20 seconds later, bang and bang they punched out it will be forever engraved in my memory. They both came down fine, the pilot was wearing jeans!! The plane landed a ways off the main runway and caught fire from the ejection sequence.

This actually was an excellent and extremely innovative idea for the time period. At the time, It was the only logical system due to the nature of the aircraft- a supersonic, high altitude bomber- a conventional system wouldn't have worked. It is complex, but it had to be. This at least provided SOME crew survivability in situations where there wouldnt be any chance without it.

Well, ejecting even today is still quite dangerous and not always survivable, but it was a lot worse back in the day, when they had explosive charges launch the seats. A "successful ejection" meant you survived uncrippled; it was quite normal to sustain spinal injuries from the violent acceleration. If you didn't recover, you could still be a ground instructor, or you could end up paralyzed. And of course, there was no "zero-zero" seats, and ejecting outside the envelope was usually bad.

Well, actually, most "announcers" (like radio voices) sound pretty much the same. These days' it's partly from "compression" of the audio signal, but there's a certain "voice" you're supposed to use. How often do you hear people actually talking the way they do when announcing something in a commercial? It was the same back then; people expected you to sound a certain way on the radio or film. And there weren't that many professional narrators, so you may hear the same guy in different videos.

This is different from the module developed for the F-111, where the whole cockpit ejected.

No pilot ever survived (without injury) using this particular ejection system?

  • @HuasoPodrido

At Mac 2, no way not even at over .65 mach. The ejection sequence is a very violent event, you are very lucky to come away on your feet unhurt.

2:37. The german way of getting out of an airplane such as that one, was already with the Mörser-sitz during the last 2years of the WW2. ... How does it come that the americans still used catapult to eject this long after the WW2???

a sunny key west tanning trip is quite ridiculous when u consider that the plane's main purpose was to melt the kremlin. i wonder how much fun it would be to bail out 1 quart of water an hour in the arctic ocean during the winter? with zero chance of rescue, it would be better to just give the pilot a pistol with 1 bullet

i thought a fake but super strong taekwando feet under the seat design is preferable, whenever necessary it will just kick out the occupant in a rather short time with less hassles...

After the bear came down, it wanted to do it again, and when they wouldn't let it, it got really depressed, because it knew that it could never get that high again. They could tell just by the way it looked, and that.. So it commited suicide.
