The B-58 became obsolete almost as soon as it became operational. The Soviets had developed SA-1's and SA-2's that could hit it and ICBM were proliferating on both sides of the iron curtain.

We have a huge one of these garden spiders that just built her web and the zig-zag pattern. It’s outside our screen room so have been able to watch it. The sun shining thru it in the morning is amazing!

The B-58 was one of my first and favorite toy planes I had back in the '60's.

I never really noticed before but the geometry of the nose secion is sort of A380ish. I used to go visit this bird when it was parked in San Antonio for years. Sounds like that all the magnesium is going to prevent restoration so I glad I toured it when I could.

I remember seeing it at kelly AFB in the mid 80's as a kid. awesome machine! I always wondered how the B-36 would have performed with some massive turboprops like the TU-95 which sounds pretty similar to the B-36. Anyway. Cheers everyone.

Lastly, DETTERANCE will NOT work forever. Instead of building more nuclear capable platforms for delivery we need to invest in DEPLOMACY! We need think tanks to figure out how to de-escalate our absurd nuclear arsenals which both the Russina's and us have over 6000 nuclear warheads..

Remember the Hustler cost for every hour of flight 73 hours in maintenance.. We lost almost 30% of the B-58's to accidents.. The russian SAM-2 made it obsolete.. So it had it's time & became a liability to our bomber force after a short while..It's sti;; my favorite bomber but they tried to make it a terrian hugging bomber but it was NOT designed for that.. Also it's biggest Achilles heel was it's RANGE! 1,400 miles! Which REALLY sucks for a BOMBER! You could add fuel pods but that took away from it's primary purpose to carry 4 120 kilo-ton nuclear grvity bombs and 1 9-megaton primary bomb.. With fuel tanks it would of degraded the purpose of the plane in half..

Oh Boy that Brig. General Stewart would not far well in the escape capsual if he had to eject in the B-58.. Anyone over 6'1" would have a hell of a time ejecting in the B-58! Why would they even send a General in the Air-Force to fly any plane they had? I guess because to fly the B-58 you had to basically be of ASTRONAUT material.. Sorry to say maybe not a load record of carrying a payload but the Blackbird has the B-58 beat in most speed records. The Blackbird can sustain a speed of mach 3.2.. Also can fly above 80,000 ft. for hours.. I believe Kelly Johnson's SR-71 can go as fast as mach 4 but it's max speed is still CLASSIFIED! As a Bomber the B-58 has the SR-71 beat..

The b-58 has the longest sustained flight record of over 1300 miles an hour.. The b-58 could fly at 1450 mph

Wow, sewing the fabric by hand, what a tedious job! People these days have no idea. Also loved the room full of engineers working on drawings…with pencils! Excellent video, very informative. This flying boat has become an obsession of mine, so beautiful and awesome! A bit confused though, I thought they couldn’t take off with 1 engine down. Also, I heard they couldn’t handle rough waters long without eventual damage.

My father was stationed at Sheppard AFB '59-'61. The Hustler's from Carswell AFB would do touch and goes on the long runway as B-52's were also stationed at Sheppard. We lived in base housing off the end of the runway. As a kid, being able to witness the Hustler's pull away at full throttle standing on their tails was amazing. I believe I built at least three models of the B-58. Too bad the ICBM's made them irrelevant.

The US announcement to develop a hydrogen bomb was only a few months earlier in Jan 1950- no one had any idea what one would weigh but that it would likely be the maximum for a B-36. The AF was certainly doing the flight to see if it could be done - putting a 28k bomb in the rear and 12k in the front to equal 40k, near the max for a single bomb bay (maybe only had a 28k conventional bomb available). The takeoff weight problem was probably not the bombs but the needed high fuel load.
