    It was a perfectly fair rule. Black and white. "if you leave your feet in the process of the catch, you have to survive the landing with control of the ball" James left his feet and lost control of the ball upon impact with the ground. It's clearly a catch, he caught it with the laces down when the QB threw the ball from inside the 20 yard line in the 2nd half, the receiver only has to make a football move if there are 3 defenders within 5 yards, unless the defense is wearing white jerseys then he has to maintain control for 5 seconds if it is the 3rd Sunday of the month. Buth then again that rule only applies if it is a daytime game or the weather is 70 degrees. However, if the receiver catches it outside the end zone he has to line up on the QB's throwing arm side, or else he has to take 3 steps and not be touched by a defender wearing an even-number jersey, unless the game is broadcast by NBC, then he only has to turn 180 degrees or less. Except then it has to happen in a state that voted Democrat, unless the receiver is wearing sleeves AND the stadium is at least 1 mile away from a body of water, otherwise it's no catch. Don't you people watch football? It's that simple!!!

    2004 was probably the best chance for that matchup to happen in the sb. Both teams had great seasons and hosted their respective title games. The Eagles won the early game vs Atlanta but Tom Brady did what Tom Brady always does in big games against the Steelers. The patriots vs eagles super bowl we got was pretty solid but seeing the 15-1 Steelers battle the 13-3 Eagles with a Super Bowl title and PA bragging rights on the line would've been awesome. 2008 was a similar deal where both PA teams played in their conference title game, but it just ended up being a reversal of 2004 with the steelers winning and the eagles losing.

  • @MMMHOTCHEEZE

    @MMMHOTCHEEZE

    11 ай бұрын

    @@danrobertson2799 Except if you actually read the rules and have basic knowledge of the English language, it was. Item 1. Player Going to the Ground. A player is considered to be going to the ground if he does not remain upright long enough to demonstrate that he is clearly a runner. If a player goes to the ground in the act of catching a pass (with or without contact by an opponent), he must maintain control of the ball until after his initial contact with the ground, whether in the field of play or the end zone. If he loses control of the ball, and the ball touches the ground before he regains control, the pass is incomplete. If he regains control prior to the ball touching the ground, the pass is complete. That was the old "survive the ground" part of the catch rule. The problem is that they did not define what initial contact with the ground is. Going by the words initial and contact, one would assume that means the first contact with the ground by any part of the body that would rule a runner down by contact (knee, elbow, shin, etc). There is no wording that would imply a player would have to survive going to the ground anyway, just that they need to have control of the ball after their initial contact with the ground. Jesse James initial contact with the ground as it pertains to that assumption is his knee and he controls the ball after his knee hits the ground. Everything else is irrelevant, it should have been a catch.

    Not sure why people think this was remotely a catch. I'm not a fan of either team, so no bias here. But he was falling as he caught the ball, hit the turf and ball came loose. Never established himself as a runner at all and simply didn't complete the catch. So just because he crossed the line, that doesn't matter since he wasn't an established runner. This is completely different than the Ertz Super Bowl catch. Ertz took three full steps and dove.

    I could. The rule is pretty clear. "if you leave your feet to go get the ball, you have to control it all the way through the landing to be awarded possession and permitted to score" See? Not that complicated. In fact it's the polar opposite of "complicated." The rule is so simple that it's rigid and doesn't give referees any leeway on close plays. Not so much this one but I think the enforcement was rigid with the Calvin Johnson catch. I think that should have counted but he let go of the ball too soon under the technialities of the rules, nothing the refs can do about this. This and the Dez play are exactly why the rule exists as written. In all 3 cases everyone either knew or should have known what the rule was from the outset. Homer fans either don't or, more usually, won't fully understand it when the actual rule doesn't benefit their team.

Just think of the implications, if we get this win (which we should've) we have the #1 seed and don't face Jacksonville in our 1st post-season match-up, granted it was still possible we could've lost to Tennessee but I doubt it, so we get the win there and after beating Brady earlier in the regular I think we have the confidence, coupled with home-field advantage to pull out another win and make it to the SB. Ed Young hmm where should I start. Ok so first he wasn't touched by a patriot at that point. Next, was he an established runner at any point? @ me with the time.... No? Ok. Third, "a football move" has been out for 10 years and nobody really complained about it until situations like these. If this was in the middle of the field nobody would care because it would be obvious he dropped the ball. That doesn't change even if he crossed the plane because in the motion, he ultimately did lose the ball before establishing himself as a runner. Therefore when you are not a runner and drop the ball, no matter where you are on the field.... Its an incomplete. And anyways its not like it was 4th and goal or anything... They had plenty of time. Can't believe there is even the tiniest bit of controversy over this... If people knew the rules of the game they wouldn't complain about a good call on an existing rule. Case closed.

What im saying is he caught the ball and had it in possession through his first and second points of contact with the ground. The terminology that the refs used of “surviving the ground” isn’t even in the rules. His initial contact was his knee hitting the ground, at that point its clear he had possession of the ball, then he extends over the goal line and when his elbow contacts the ground he still has the ball. According to the terminology used in the rule this play is a touchdown

  • @Some0neSomewhere

    People who insist on "It's a touch down because the ball broke the line" need to read the rule book. People are confusing a runner with full control of the ball vs a receiver who's in the process of making a catch. When a runner, who has control of the ball breaks the goal plane with the ball, the play is dead as it is a TD. When a RECEIVER is in the process of making a catch the play is NOT DEAD until he controls it to the ground. Whether he crosses the line or not means nothing UNTIL it's deemed he has control of the ball. James catches the ball and in less than a second, turns, falls to a knee, stretches, and hits the ground with the ball causing it to pop loose. The ball did not "survive the ground" and that's that. It's not really hard to see unless you're biased against or for one of the teams. If you don't like the rule, that's fine, most people don't (even Pats fans hate it since it was called on them earlier in the year.) It's a horrible rule which, no doubt, will be changed. If I was a Pitt fan, I'd be more angry at the time management and play call after that, though. Ben should have thrown that away and gone for OT.

  • @jemiller226

    @jemiller226

    You don't know the rule, so why are you telling everyone else what they should think? Here it is: "If a player goes to the ground in the act of catching a pass (with or without contact by an opponent), he must maintain control of the ball until after his initial contact with the ground." Key phrase is "his initial contact with the ground", which would be his knee, not his hand. The phrase "survive the ground" is nowhere in the rule and is 100% an after the fact interpretation of what is written. Maybe it's what the competition committee intended the rule to say, but it's not what the rule actually says.

  • @dragoncarnage1210

    @dragoncarnage1210

    4 жыл бұрын

    This is incomplete because a reciever must maintain possession of the ball if they have not progressed forward using their feet or hands technically and is ineligible to be considered a runner. They must survive contact with the ground which he clearly did not as he lost control when the ball hit the ground. The james white was a toss to the RB so he was already a runner as he did not catch a forward pass. James white then broke the plane of the endzone and scored.

    one of the many ridiculous calls Steelers fans have endured when playing Brady, not unlike current Superbowl where not a single penalty was called on the Bucs 1st half vs. 8 against Chiefs. Brady's interception was called back b/c of away from ball/play contact in the end zone. sick of it. the NFL created the greatest QB of all time by overturning his errors, other teams TDs, and good defensive plays. i have watched it for a DECADE...and now believe the NFL is just rigged. whoever they decide will win wins. he's caught cheating amid DEFLATE-GATE and nothing happens but for sitting out a few games - he's never asked about it in interviews and it is swept away. am so over it. can't even come near his receivers while their defenses bury the opposing teams and get no penalties. what a mockery his pact with the devil/wife's witchcraft/NFL creation have made of the game.

  • @darchon5
    @darchon56 жыл бұрын

    Amazing that no one, including Riveron, talks about the conclusive evidence (in order for replay to overturn) that James lost control of the ball. Riveron merely points out that the tip of the ball hits the ground - but, his right hand is under it holding the ball. Part of the ball is allowed to touch the ground if you have possession - doesn't having a hand under the ball with the other hand both gripping it indicate not losing control?!? Straight from the NFL rulebook, Rule 15, Section 2, Article 3: "A decision will be reversed only when there is clear and obvious visual evidence available that warrants the change." No one can say there is "clear and obvious" evidence that James didn't maintain control, because of his hand under the ball. The replays are definitely NOT clear, thus the call shouldn't have been overturned.

  • @rich63113

    @rich63113

    6 жыл бұрын

    The left hand isn't holding it though - it comes off, and ends up near his facemask, and the ball spins a full 90 degrees (watch the laces). The evidence is clear he didn't maintain control

  • @darchon5

    @darchon5

    6 жыл бұрын

    As his left hand is coming off, his right goes under the ball - arguably goes under before the left comes off. Bottom line is that there isn't a great camera angle or frame that definitely shows loss of control during the transfer. The ball moving/spinning is not enough to constitute loss of control. The evidence isn't clear that control is lost. And if it isn't lost, then the ball can move during the process of a catch (NFL Rulebook Rule 8, Section 1, Article 3) AND it can be touching the ground (NFL Rulebook Rule 8, Section 1, Article 3, Item 4).

  • @rich63113

    @rich63113

    6 жыл бұрын

    "As his left hand is coming off, his right goes under the ball" No, it doesn't, it comes alongside the ball - this is clear in all the photos. "The ball moving/spinning is not enough to constitute loss of control." When you only have one hand contacting the ball, because your other hand is bouncing off your facemask, the ball spinning makes "controlling the ball" a physical impossibility. The ball is literally sitting on the ground with him barely touching it, and none of his fingers under it in this shot. cbsboston.files.wordpress.com/2017/12/gettyimages-894922700.jpg

  • @darchon5

    @darchon5

    6 жыл бұрын

    3 points of contention: #1. "all the photos" - there are no photos clearly showing his right hand "comes alongside the ball". Yours is the closest to questionable that there is but it doesn't show what you claim - see #3 below. Besides, they're using video replays, not still photos, to evaluate the evidence - and the argument is it shouldn't have been overturned based on their evidence. #2. "only have one hand contacting the ball" - there is no point seen where that's the only thing contacting the ball - or at the very least, what you claim, again, isn't clear; the side and back of his left hand and/or his left arm stays in contact with the ball as his right goes under it. #3. "none of his fingers under it in this shot" - your photo shows 1 finger & 1 thumb on his right hand; the other 3 fingers are not seen and at least a couple could be or are under the ball. So if the ball is sitting on the ground with 1-3 fingers under it & is being braced against his left arm on the other side, the question is, can we definitively say that he lost control? I think we need clearer rules about what constitutes maintaining control vs losing it. Again, the rulebook says that the ball can move and the ball can touch the ground if maintaining control - yet those 2 things themselves can be used to demonstrate losing control. Let's step back from the minutiae: James clearly has possession and control of the ball as he's going to the ground, and the point is that replay didn't provide "clear and obvious" evidence that he loses control when contacting the ground. There have been no discernible arguments that satisfy that criteria, hence it shouldn't have been overturned. I'm not saying you're definitely wrong about losing control as I cannot prove for sure that James didn't lose control. But, the burden of proof is on your side and no evidence is out there that can conclusively proves that he DID lose control. The best argument is your photo, but you cannot simply say no fingers are under it when we cannot see them. In the CJ & Dez catch replays, everything is clearly seen on replay, nothing hidden. Big difference from here.

  • @darchon5

    I should also point out that, concerning objectivity/bias: if the roles were reversed, Patriots fans would be arguing the exact same points! And, while I could very well argue their points, I'd realize that there would not be enough evidence to back them up. While I have seen disagreement among Patriots fans, and plenty have admitted that they still think it was a catch, I haven't seen or heard any non-Patriots fans claim that there was conclusive evidence to overturn. Additionally, if the refs had initially ruled it incomplete, and let's say it were challengeable (currently it's not), then the refs should not overturn that either because of the same point - no conclusive evidence to overturn.
