Controlling the polar coordinates of an object 3
Point A of the pink object (a slider) is determined by the distance r from a fixed point O and the angle φ from a fixed direction Ox.
The yellow motor controls the distance r.
The green motor controls the angle φ.
Pink line in the last scene of the video is the trajectory of point A.
Pros: both motors are grounded. The change of one coordinate does not affect the other.
Cons: too many parts and the height of the whole mechanism is large.

this feels like it'd be perfect for milling machines, assuming this can survive high speeds (a few design challenges may be had)

The guide pin(red part) would need to be high speed. You could perhaps fashion a motor with gear to that piece. It has its draw backs and strengths. With 5-axis milling-that blows this out of the water. The benefit I see is its shape, its probably least likely to need as much calibration

Would the mechanism work if you had a gear instead of screws (red and pink) to control the radial position?

It's fixed to the jade top disk.
