Control multiple computers at the same time with Barrier
Ғылым және технология
A note... from the future!
I made this video in 2021. It is now 2024 and I am not entirely certain Barrier is being maintained anymore. The GitHub for Barrier doesn't show much activity since 2022: github.com/debauchee/barrier
As such, I'm not sure the current status of the Barrier project, but a new project has emerged (forked, I believe) which appears to have more traction and possible Wayland support, called "Input Leap."
Their GitHub is here: github.com/input-leap/input-leap
I am planning on investigating more, and will likely record a follow-up to this video in the next few months.
The original description continues below.
---
If you've ever needed to control multiple computers on the same desk from a single keyboard and mouse, Barrier is software worth checking out!
Barrier is a software solution (a fork of Synergy) which replaces unsightly KVM switches, and is super neat! In this video, I'll install Barrier on four systems (running Pop!_OS, Windows 10, macOS, and GhostBSD), and run them all from the same keyboard and mouse!
Music is by me! Background audio was recorded on Linux using the Bitwig Studio DAW.

No one can make BSD for Dummies. BSDs are meant for extremely intelligent beings who belong to a higher plane of existence. Not for the likes of us. As put kindly several times in the FreeBSD forums, they did not make it to be used as a desktop OS.
+1 for the BSD part! I've been using Linux for more than 25 years now and have always been wondering about "that other Unix-like OS", so a good comprehensive overview will be much appreciated.

Very useful. While the abbreviation KVM can be confusing nowadays these switches and the name predate this virtualization technology probably by at least 10-15 years, so blame the linux community for not coming up with a better name.

Came to say the same. AT LEAST 15 years. I remember drooling over KVMs I couldn't afford (or get my dept. to buy) in the very early 90's and I'm pretty sure enterprises with bigger pockets than 20 year old me were using well before that.

@@JoelAz909 absolutely. I encountered my first KVM in 1998, being used by a not-wealthy compsci undergrad. So if there were affordable ones at that point, there were presumably unaffordable ones several years earlier.

Dang it, came to say the same. Price usually follows features. The KVM switches we use in the datacenter are 200 times the cost of the one I have on my desk at home. Don't worry, we have thousands of the "other" kind of KVM in the datacenter too!

The thing I like the most about this channel is the randomness of the content.Great Work!
Great intro to Barrier! It may come in handy someday. And yes, please do that video on BSD.
I'm in, love the content Veronica - keep it up :) I'd been dragging my feet on how to manage multiple laptops for a while, this is an amazing free solution. With multiple desktop spaces in each environment you should be able to maximize each on workspace when you want to focus on something specific. Nice.
Thank you for your videos! For some reason when I watch them I can imagine myself watching this on a local PBS or cable access channel. I mean this in the best way possible. Very fun and educational.
I saw this video a few months back and was inspired, but wasn't really set up to try it out at that time. Today I have moved a bunch of hardware around and I'm going to set this up, but first I needed to search around for this video again to rewatch and it's just as inspiring now as it was then. I love your energy and enthusiasm.
I would love to see a Deep dive into ghostbsd I have player around with ghostbsd a little bit but there is only so much time in a day🙂
FYI, Barrier is now available for MacOS via Homebrew. I was able to download 2.4.0 with "brew install barrier". Also installed it on Manjaro Linux with the paru package manager (which can install from the AUR).

I came here thinking ho hum, let's see, "you have to tell it where the monitors are" wait, what, "shared clipboard" OMG, brilliant.
Learning in a very relaxing way, is awesome. You explain things so consice that it's not confusing. I lived during the era but never had my OWN computer until the 90s ... Seeing things like this with programs and periphals adpated for the now technology is amazing
+1 for more info on the BSDs. It's been a long time for me, it would be very helpful to get up to speed. There used to only be three people talked about: Open, Net and Free! :) Thank you for the info on Barrier, I have been in KVM hell (not the virtual machine kind, either) for months. I was floored when a USB keyboard I have wouldn't work with the KVM I have but works fine everywhere else...crazy!
This was amazing. I'm addicted to the content on your channel now. Thanks for the great content. :)
Been loving all of your videos! You have a fun exciting personality to explain things. It's awesome
THANK YOU for showcasing this brilliant program! I'm using it right now on both an Ubuntu Studio laptop and iMac (running High Sierra since it's from 2011). I had to use an slightly earlier version on the Mac, but it's working wonderfully. And it's great to see I can even add a Raspberry Pi into the mix. Wish I had stumbled onto your channel earlier. And I see you're a C64 and Amiga fan - perfect! :) I couldn't smash that Subscribe button fast enough!
I just discovered your channel today and i am absolutely impressed!
Just found your channel & have subscribed. I'm taking a A+ course & just did a module where they suggested Mouse Without Borders, which is a Windows aupp. Since one of my desktops is running Ubuntu, I searched for a multi-OS variant & found Barrier. You give a great explanation of & show real-time usage of this little app. I have spent HUNDREDS of dollars on KVM's in the past. My quirk with barrier is , that I must run the server from my Ubuntu desktop. This configuration allows both my Windows 10 desktop & Windows 11 laptop to work with one keyboard & mouse (just don't type too fast). But neither windows machine, when configured as the server, work; either to each other or the Ubuntu desktop. II will have to play around with this some more, but for now one *Nix to rule them all. (-;
As someone who has never seen this channel's content before, this video is truly amazing.
I just found yr channel the other day, & you have quick answers for so many things I need to know, & you aren't an obnoxious tech bro who make bad jokes in a fake voice like most tech channel hosts. Thank you, for being a good teacher, and a pleasant person to learn from.

You like the BSD family and you have a very good and crazy style of video making and story telling, what more can we wish for 😁
Just paused the video to say: please, PLEASE talk about BSDs! They are here, even though many people haven't heard of about. I'm a big fan of OpenBSD, but FreeBSD is the base for some appliances such pfSense, and NetBSD is even inside Dreamcast (although it says Windows in a badge... For some reason...). Haven't tried GhostBSD, but I'm downloading it right now! Thanks for all the knowledge you're sharing with us!
First, cute dog! I loved the paint can hack! I used Synergy several years ago when I was running two computers (windows 7 and Mac) side by side. Good stuff then. I didn't know that it had been forked. It looks like the Barrier team has smoothed some of the rough edges. Thanks for the fun video!
22 years ago, a guy I worked with chose one of those trackball devices. While I couldn't get on with the thing, he absolutely loved using it, and most other people who tried it also did.
Another excellent video as always, the video editing was incredible, I have many laptops with different Linux distributions, I will try Barrier and of course I will be grateful if you share more about BSD, thank you very much Veronica, I always enjoy your videos.

Awesome. Thank you for this. It was exactly what I was looking for and out of like 5 videos you were the only one with the solution!
Hi Veronica, awesome, thanks for sharing!😊 Also enjoyed your historical Re enactment :D.
Barrier is fantastic. I used to use Synergy at work, to seamlessly switch between my corporate Windows laptop and my Linux developer workstation, but after all of the drama (security & source) I switched to Barrier as soon as I discovered it. I now have hot zones set up so that different sized screens only 'join' where they physically match up, so I rarely end up switching machine focus accidentally. I sit my work laptop below my ultra-wide workstation monitor, so only the middle third of the bottom edge of that screen is sensitive to switching to the laptop.
THANK YOU for being here! I totally needed this now! (new subscriber)
+1 for the trackball mouse
Always good to learn about different apps. Very useful, thankyou.

Thank you. I appreciate your adorable personality as much as the content you were sharing. I've been looking at purchasing Symless Synergy which does much of the same with slightly less configuration, but at a small price. I would be very interested in seeing a functional comparison of the two software products. That said, your approach can support a lot more computers whereas a higher priced license would be needed for Synergy to support more than three systems.
Thanks for including those URLs in the video description.

I didn't know about your channel in 2021 when I bought my motorcycle and named her Veronica.

@@locnar1701 why? Because D and K are your “anchor keys” when you learn to touch-type, and frequently typewriters had bumps on the D and K keys. Apple was just matching the existing standards/expectations. I’d love to know why early home PC keyboards decided to move the bumps to the J and F keys? Was it industrial designers who didn’t know how to touch-type and figured any key was as good as another for finding your place? Or was there some other reason or a competing standard that they were matching? In any case, I learned on electric typewriters with bumps on D and K, my original mechanical typewriter had bumps on D and K, and all my computers (Apple IIs and Macs) either had no bumps or had the bumps on D and K. So after decades of touch typing, when I first encountered keyboards with bumps on F and J it completely threw me off. It’s probably been a decade since I’ve owned or used a keyboard with the bumps on the “correct” keys (Macs switched to the less-useful J and F many years ago) and I /still/ reflexively put my middle fingers on the bumps maybe half the time and type a couple sentences of garbage before I notice. It was easier for me to switch to Dvorak than to get used to anchoring my typing position with my pointer fingers.
