DA player here. Really love your Contrast+, and it seems to be less time intensive, but the brightness reads more as Salamanders to me. I really like that dark dark green. I will still be using some parts of the contrast process, though! Also, a fun fact, but the DA were never supposed to be green. An artist mistook an art piece of their black armor as green, and painted them with green armor. After that it just kinda stuck

I love the DA too grandmaster, the DA will be unstoppable when the army is rebuilt after the Fallen turned their backs on their rightful ruler and offered their traitourous loyalties up to the Dark Gods of chaos

Been looking for a while to bring back the old, warmer green of the old school Dark Angels paint scheme. The Contrast + looks to give the exact results I wanted , thank you!
Yesss I'd love one of these for every single Legion
Nice job with both. I think I agree with you that the Contrast+ technique looked better for the aquilla and the purity seal, but still prefer the classic look when it comes to the armor. Thanks for sharing this.
I’d love to see the Deathwing and why it doesn’t work none contrasted please, love the work Josh you’re my painting guru 😊
Missed this video somehow so this comment will be late but.... I know at the beginning of the video you said that it wouldn't make sense to do a Deathwing version of contrast vs classic but actually I'd beg to differ. I think doing a video like this would really illustrate how much easier/better contrasts have made painting DW. I would find that kind of comparison quite interesting. Thanks love the channel. 👍
Another great video Josh. This is confirming what I've thought for a while that a combination of Contrast and classic is the best way overall.
I'd love to see your contrast+ vs classic recipes for the Raptors. Great video as usual!
absolutely great comparison! played DA since rogue trader and had a hard time to evolve from the original pitch black to the caliban green and love this contrast paint approach in time for the new edition
Would love to see your take on the Raptors chapter. Also wouldn't mind seeing some Tyranid variants maybe... Great work as always 👍🏻
The Contrast Marine is just a decal away from being a Salamander. Looks amazing but definitely very warm.

I found that if you prime it grey then dry brush white it actually works a bit better. And results in a more "dark angely" green.
Nice tutorial, and very interesting to see the differences between them. Although I think for the classic method it would be more practical to use a grey spray, as mechanicus standard grey or grey seer.
I'm using mostly the contrast method but building up off the classic Caliban green for no other reason than being able to have a more consistent green across my whole army. I really suck using contrast on large flat panels on vehicles so having a non-contrast option for the main color makes things easier for me.
I have all the greens and I've been looking for a reason for Karandras and I like how it starts off bright green and how ytou darken it down. I might have to try a test model with Aeldari Emerald
Would love to see Black Legion done, I’m sort’ve doing my own mix between classic and contrast and not having results that I like (I’m also new to this hobby so that might be why)
I’d love to see Salamanders done, I also struggle with greens so would love to see how you handle them as well as the Dark Angels
Love the Classic one more but both are awesome. Maybe throw in some chaos with a Contrast + vs Classic for Thousand Sons?
Great video. Thank you very much. I would like to see Dark Angels SM in Phobos armor, like Kill Team Phobos Strike Team, or some kind of Reaver in Dark Angel scheme. Thank you.
Great videos! I'm so glad that i found someone who shows the full process. One question please - how to you prime your miniatures with the Warithbone? Airbrush with thinner? Spray?
Great work! Did you not feel the need to use the Caliban Green / medium mix to fix the armour plates on this contrast model like you’ve done in the past? Also, would using warp lightning instead of Karandras Green as the pre-shade for Dark Angels Green like you did with your Redemptor lead to a slightly darker final product?
If I may, a second layer of DAG can really cool them down and bring them more definitively away from Salamander territory
Have you ever thought of doing Bloab Rotspawned with contrast? Such a beautiful model.
I love your work, but don't get Karandras Green as undercoat. Just use Warp Lightning - it would give the dark tones that make the DA green.
I’ve started using Targor Rageshade instead of Nuln Oil most of the time these days, amazing tone.
Love the contrat one
Could you use Grey Seer as a base rather than Wraithbone to get a slightly darker green or would it interfere with some of the other stages too much?
Hello, do you thin you layer paints before applying them on the mini? I tried the Classic Method, but it came out like the Contrast one.
Any tips on how to use the contrast method on vehicles?
Completely unrelated to this video but I would love to see a Contrast+ tutorial for Eldrad Ulthran at some point. Think your tutorials are all incredible

I love these videos. I would really like to see you do chaos space marines black legion next time
The ending aged well - The Lion's back, baby!!!
"I am not doing Deathwing in classic" It's what put me off in doing a Deathwing Army going all the way back to 2nd edition but now...
Thank you for this very useful video. Since I've been struggling with Dark Angels Green for quite some time, I had to try the combination of Karandras Green and Dark Angels Green. I've tried on two models, one with DAG straight from the pot and one with 50:50 Contrast Medium and DAG, as you showed in your Azrael vid. Both came out... underwhelming, at least at my skill level. The 50:50 version definitely is to bright for my taste. The one with DAG straight from the pot is better, but still retains the base issues with the colour. So I'll probably be staying with your DAG + glaze method for now, as this has produced serviceable results. Might try the glaze on the straight DAG one on top to see if that works...

Update: Tried the glaze on top of Karandras Green and regular Dark Angels Green. Outcome is quite decent, though you have to glaze almost the entire miniature to keep the tone consistent. Produces slightly warmer tone and warmer highlights - I might try this on my next greenwing squad.
what size of brush do you use ?
I always forget you have epic wizard 🧙♂️ beard
Hey! When you were highlighting the actual armour with the warpstone glow; are you thinning out that layer paint also?
@Warhipster

I am indeed yes!
I think I’ll try making mine caliban green but do the seal parchment, Aquila, joints, and the gun in contrast+ but otherwise do it classic! Idk how it will turn out in brand new but I’ll come back with an update for those that actually look at the comments to see if someone tried it.

That sounds like a best of both worlds idea and I love it!
I'll definitely be using the classic for my DA greenwing marines. Can I ask, does it matter too much which primer for classic? I have chaos black and Grey seer. I thought chaos black would be best.

@@curtcotham6993 I don't have an airbrush unfortunately. Would you go for grey over black?
I like the contrast brightness, but I love my angels dark or bloody. Gonna have to go with classic. But only just.
Raptors and Blood Ravens would be cool. Maybe Lamenters if your feeling like a masochist some day 😆
Are you using Iron Warrior paint for the metallics or Ironbreaker? Because I'm using Iron Warriors and the tone is much darker than the video... Maybe the light?
I'd love to see you do a rubric marine 😁
The Black Legion is almost a “must do” at this point, isn’t it? Just round out the Fury box - Contrast+ vs Classic Black Legion Obliterators. Or Venomcrawler. I’d love to see your take on either.
Would love to see how you would approach Blood Ravens!
You could probably layer Ulthuan Grey right on top of the Wraithbone or Corax White, not necessarily on Celestra Grey. As for a future project suggestion, I'd like to see a comparison on different ways of painting the Alpha Legion, because the contrast-over-metal method can be a bit temperamental. Clear coats on metal, coloured metallics, solvent-based paints etc.
i mean, if your sticking to loyalists, i want to see you do either Crimson Fists, Imperial Fists or space wolves!
I’d like to see Heresy Space Wolves like this.
I've painted 7 intercessors and cannot match the contrast +. I love that green, still dark but not to be confused with black (as my dark angels paint makes them look). But I can't get rid of streaks bleeding through or adding the DA contrast and it just looking black. I dont think your contrast + looks even close to salamanders btw
Next time, basecoat the CONTRAST one with MECHANICANUM GREY, it'll get more dark green like the original method
i will use that contrast + on black orc skin
The problem with Caliban Green is that it is Caliban Green. It is so completely inferior to the previous Dark Angels Green (the paint not contrast), it's sad and very frustrating. Dark Angels Green would have worked fine over Wraithbone, whereas Caliban really needs to be over a base of black. Sorry, just the mad ramblings of a frustrated Dark Angels painter. That said, I am really liking the way you did the Contrast. The Karandras Green undercoat is the key. I'd tried just Dark Angels contrast, and it did not work for me. I am going to have to try again with Karandras. If it looks as good in person to me as it does on screen, then my 5th Company Firstborn might be headed for the strip tank. lol
Went through your backlog, should try something new and paint up some Orks!
Loved the contrast+ green, great work sir 👌
Thousand sons contrast+ vs classic please
Nice Raven Guard next?
Deathwing next then, yeah?

The warmer one looks more Salamanders to me. It would be good to see how the 2 look together with the additional colours that the company markings would give.
Alpha legion please 🙏
Please do imperial fists!!!!! I am begging you!!!!

I cheated by just airbrushing my Dark Angels Green as a base, came out better than the other options i tried.

That is not even close to Salamanders which is good! I wonder how Aeldari Emerald would look over grey? I placed some down on some white paper palette and it seemed darker than Karandras, but lkighter than Dark Angels. I can't stand the Dark Angel Contrast paint. You'll never catch me using it as a Base....NEVER!!! Also hate how they have a red gun casing arrrrg! When I hate a paint for a faction I like, I'll swap it out for a different red or something that has a red hue. Like Sigvald Burgandy, or Burnt Red from Pro Acryl, ok fine I would use Bold Pyrrole Red from Pro Acryl because I love looking for excuses to try nice paints. Or fool around with the red shades from GW. Either way, I prefer the warmer green

there is older art of green wing marines with metal colored guns, much cooler than the christmas tree thing they got going for them nowadays
LOL I know this is a year old, but whoever told you to pronounce "aquila" like tequila is certainly fucking with you
really dig both, but not gonna lie, the Contrast one totally reads as grimdark Salamanders to me
