@@foolforyou69 they're not making fun of Theryn; they're referring to a darkly funny voice-over that she contributed to Contra's video "Gender Critical", where she read a quote written by a TERF describing a trans woman. Theryn did a great job with the voice-over, and placed particular emphasis on the word "BURGEONING", which made the quote so much more ridiculous and funnier than it was originally. Contra also brings back the word "BURGEONING" later in the video, making it one of the more memorable jokes.

The guy at 59:51 just perfectly encapsulates every philosophy student I've ever interacted with regardless of political leanings. Philosophy folks (undergrads and grads both) spend so much time stuck in black holes of philosophizing it's as if they're ill-equipped to then pull ideas (and perhaps conclusions) out of their texts and use them in real world applications where human beings exist with problems that require objective, tangible solutions. I'm a lit person, so my appreciation for philosophy (and history) runs VERY deep, but philosophy scholars have always tended toward looking at their ideas in a vacuum rather than taking an interdisciplinary approach that would allow them to actually do something with it...at least in my experience.
@dorisblok

I think the problem with this guy is perfectionism. he doesn't want to cut the knot, because he's afraid details will get lost. I get it, I'm a philosophy student as well. but I think what he needs to do is let the enumeration of details go and dare to ask the question, which will always be imperfect, and which will always make you vulnerable. and I see how his autism might make it an even more difficult thing to do for him. Just wanna add that I don't mean he's a victim or anything like that, not at all! I just think he can do better, and if he doesn't want to, then fine

A lot of Tabby's appeal is the sheer joy of smashing. There's a whole lot of fear and pain and anger on the left. We're a coalition of everyone on the wrong side of society's boot, and kicking back is a tremendously appealing dream. We may have very reasonable problems with the bat as a political tool - pragmatic ones moral ones - and we should. But whatever those problems, there WILL be that appeal, kicking back isn't necessarily bad all the time, and we're going to love an icon of resistance that way. Siegel and Schuster made Superman as a tough guy for the little guy in the face of fascism and capitalism in the 1930's. In a way, Tabby's queer Supercatgirl now.
@schroeder666
4 жыл бұрын
I think this is true but also reductive. She's also an icon for polarized thinking, black and white moralistic thinking, which is a meaningful topic with regard to understanding human behavior. The result, from my perspective at least, is that this makes Tabby both an icon of impulsive, direct, honest, expressive anger, as well as that friend who is most likely to commit suicide or be hospitalized, who can't talk things through in a reasonable way, who is always in destructive relationships, etc. I'm glad the channel depicts them as coherent and having innate dignity - even if only because I think that's a beautiful thing to give every person - but in reality Tabby does a lot of damage to herself and her communities.

The nuanced and well-reasoned remarks of what academic freedom should include, especially by Natalie made a lot of sense as a guide for public policy right here in Canada. Essentially that "freedom of speech" should never include the right to harm or vilify categories of people who are vulnerable through no conscious fault of their own.

""freedom of speech" should never include the right to harm or vilify categories of people who are vulnerable through no conscious fault of their own." That... that's actually a really good way of saying and formulating in a simple phrase that can open discussions about the topic, being what constitutes "harm" and "vilify" and what cases people can be considered "vulnerable through no conscious fault of their own", instead of discussing random points about free speech and such, which doesn't lead anywhere. Thank you sir for writing this lol

@@pitchforkpeasant6219 this is how I've always felt myself aswell. I'd much rather have someone call me a fucking faggot in my face than having to overhear someone call something or someone "gay" as a substitute word for something like "stupid" or "lame" with an intimidating, possible double entendre of still also referring to homophilia, being well aware that I am within hearing distance and abusing that opportunity to for example establish social dominance, to socially exclude or negatively discriminate me (and other gays) or just to hurt my feelings or humiliate me even. And the shitty thing is that it is often a vague difference between people who say that in such context with malignant intent and people who say so with ignorantly innocent intent.
I would've loved to have met Natalie in person at an event like that (it doesn't seem like she does in-person appearances anymore, or at least not often) but we can still ask her questions on Patreon which she'll answer on live stream!
The “marketplace of ideas” should not include bad ideas that have already been thoroughly vetted and found to be useless to us, or even dangerous, including ideas like fascism, which were vetted by a world war.
@achinthmurali5207
3 жыл бұрын
By that logic communism shouldn’t be included because of the Cold War. Ideas aren’t good or bad simply by the way they are applied but also by what they say. Fascism is bad, at least in my opinion, because of its beliefs and tenets not because of its pioneers. I think communism is bad for the same reason. Although I don’t have an opinion on which is worse yet.
This is so interesting. I would have thought I’d have immediate objections to their points of view, but so far (an 8th of the way through) I think they’re both very rational. Will update if a hardcore disagreement comes up.

At the end of the day, if there is group of people treating gay people like crap, gay people won't want to be around them, and if trans people are in a classroom setting where their fellow students are constantly treating them like crap why would they stay in that class, and if that continues to happen trans people are just stuck. This is why we can't allow it in the first place. I have no idea on the campus speaker issues. But twitter is designed as an internet gossip channel not the attempt of the modern agora that people have been trying to use it fot. It has to be replaced with something that does not empower or allow anonymity or 'retweeting', as well as including algorithms that do fallacy-spotting, fact-checking, & source footnoting. Know anyone that can program and/or host?

Yeah like your post says, im just not sure meaningful open discussion can be had across the internet in any format. Actually even watching professors who know thier stuff debate each other in person can be a snoozefest because even they devolve to personal atks or intellectual showmanship for audience. My 2 cents anyway
The guy at the end asking the trans question really thought he did something..... like there was a much better conversation being had that was so much more nuanced and ugly red sweater thought he was the pinnacle of rational thought.

With the bullshit Theryn posted not that long ago, it's surprising Natalie became friends with her at all. And Theryn also doesn't add much to this conversations, so yeah, weird. Love Natalie tho. Amazing debate, what an intellect.

On the point about people pretending bigotry is just trolling or a joke : if you can laugh about something thats hurting someone, it shows you don't care about that person's wellbeing,that you don't value their rights.

I know "Parrott" was her natal surnane. (In fact if you see older references to her, she's usually called "[deadname] Parrot"). She later changed her name to "Natalie Wynn", but I wouldn't be surprised if the "Wynn" part is just a stage name. A lot of KZreadrs don't use their real last names. "Thorn", "Sanjati", and "Dawson" for instance are all stage names.

(then again, Abigail did seem to imply that the name "Thorn" is her on her documents now. But at the very least, it used to be a stage name).
