    Thank you for this. I wonder how much of the explanation of Yayoi Kusama's art (& life) is fiction and marketing - but shh: I'm probably not allowed to say/ask that... Very little here that interests me much - including Richter (yawn) = shows my ignorance I'm sure...

    I enjoy your vids, but that description of the Luc Tuymans 9/11 still life is absurd. It's just an average still life from an average painter.

  • @contemporaryartissue

    @contemporaryartissue

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi Jayzin, thank you for tuning in and for leaving a comment here. It is your absolute right to dislike the Tuymans 9/11 still life, but this is simply its story. Tuymans explained how the shock and trauma of the events absolutely paralyzed him in his studio. The reality was too shocking to deal with it, react to it. So he had to flee to idyll, to escape from the cruel event that had just taken place. So what is more idyllic than a still life? Its rest, stillness and innocence? However, in the painting we can still feel the trauma and shock. The grey surroundings are reminiscent to the gloomy and grey sky that very day in New York. The composition is photographed and painted in a similar way as photographing a city skyline. The can of water is placed in the middle as the twin towers are most often photographed and how they used to tower above the other buildings. Then there is of course the scale, and the undeniable monumentality of the painting, not only making that can of water look like a sky scraper and the entire still life as a cityscape, but it also adds the notion of monumental history painting. To conclude, a still life is the nature morte, reflecting upon mortality, decay and the finiteness of things, as if Tuymans is mourning for those victims. Personally, I think it is a terrific painting, one of my favorites in fact. And maybe one would say Tuymans is an average painter, but no-one can deny he is a terrific artist.
