Hi there, dear readers and subscribers. Today we take on contemporary landscape painting, presenting the top 12 results from our online article 'Contemporary Landscape Painting: A Complete Survey'. First and foremost, I wish to anticipate some negative comments who would rightly quote the lack of diversity in this list. We are simply presenting the top results from our survey, and as often, the top tiers of the art world still lack diversity. However, we strongly believe and notice things are shifting for the better. Feel free to read the entire article online, discover a broader selection of artists (link in description). To conclude, we would like to know what you think about landscape painting as a genre in a contemporary context? And who did we miss out in our list/article? Chat soon!

Thiebaud was much respected and beloved by us here. The SF/Bay Area artist community regard him in similar way as Diebencorn. His oeuvre is seen as pop influenced. Due to strong colors and oft iconic subjects such a bubble gum machines, dessert case repetition of cakes. The NY 60’s critics placed that on him. He saw himself as more then that. We here see him as Bay Area Figurative though his style taken by a hyped color work, that is much the atmospheric effect here. Due to our proximity to the bay and the Pacific oceans fog/sun mystical effect producing wild pastel colors! A fanatical fascination with contour and loose but well put color allowed him to enter a unique space between graphic and painterly. He taught for years at UC Davis not far from us (Benicia). He was not directly allied with the original SF/Bay Area Abstract movement; Diebencorn, Park, Bishchoff, Weeks, etc. (first generation) Bruce MaGaw, Manual Nuri, Joan Brown, etc. (second generation). I studied under Bruce MaGaw at SFAI. To my point his connection is to that groups “idea” of unrecognizable (abstract) flatness lilting into recognizable (realistic) form.

Excellent video, thanks. (apart from the phrase "trascending the banality of reality" that I think is not very fortunate as one can also say "trascending the banality of abstraction" or "trascending the banality of conceptualism" or "trascending the banality of minimalism" according to the case, categorizing something as banal in the end is banal) (and don't worry about the comments about the gender of the artists or their place of birth, the video is about art, and most of the artists in the video are old artists which means their whole life work speak for them).

Why is it that when women artist’s are talked about they come under such headings as ‘top 10 female artist’s’ or ‘female artist’s to look out for’. Have you ever seen someone say ‘top ten male artists’? Of course not. It makes me feel disillusioned with the art world and all you male gatekeepers.

The narrator of this video displays a good example of what in the art world is called Art speak: Artspeak (often derogatory) The specialist vocabulary and language associated with art and artists, especially when seen as complicated or pretentious. An Artist's Art is meant to speak/communicate to the audience or viewer through the artist's art not interpreted or explained by a critic or presenter. By all means, share your feelings, and thoughts, good or bad Etc...when talking to friends other collectors, and associates. But when speaking to Art brokers, dealers, Gallerists, Advisors, Etc... Beware, this is one reason there is such elitist manipulation in the ART market today. If you are a collector like me listen to your heart, after all, if it's your money and it's going to hang on your wall and be a True reflection of you and your taste, not someone else, Beware !

They rarely take risks in life, because their biology is focused on more important things like safety and raising children. It's no surprise that you saw mostly men in those top ratings. Yes, a very good question and valid point. The reason why I do not meddle with these research results is because we aim to be as objective and art scientific as possible. Via this methodology, the Artfacts algorithm is able to provide a reasoned selection of the most prominent artists today. However, these top results still need to be interpreted with a critical pair of eyes and mind. The main reason why we adore using the Artfacts algorithm is that it enables us to approach fame/popularity/pertinence objectively. Otherwise, depending on the person who creates the list, it would be entirely different. If I made them, I would be imposing my personal opinion on you, which I don't feel comfortable with. Instead, with this algorithm, we can create these rankings in a very coherent and consistent manner. It crawls all artists in the world, so every artist is considered, and it can often show a discrepancy between our perception of the fame of a specific artist versus reality

Female artists don't produce such garbage, as they're focused on harmony and beauty, as they create stunning decorative art and crafts. Men often take risk, don't care about beauty or practicality of their work and enjoy antagonizing art institutions and people in general. So, this rating of hideous garbage is mostly done by biological males.

How does one then define landscape? Having figures in a landscape as a reference should not preclude any work of art as being a landscape , house's, boats on the shore are well known in the history of painting in many a famous landscape work. Well, the West is the most modern place and it leads the world. White men did contribute the most in human evolution. They're also likely to push the limits by taking risk, unlike women (who are focused on safety, beauty, harmony and raising children). Those are the reasons for this list. I'm happy that women didn't produce anything hideous enough to make it on this list.

Hi Alex, we are aware of this issue. In fact, we know the Romanian art scene pretty well, including how the names should be pronounced. The problem is with this narrator that it is an AI voice. The language is set the English, so we can not reproduce sounds that are not in the English language, nor can we switch to another voice in the middle of the video. But now things are better as we host our video's ourselves, instead of using an AI voice. In any case, thank you for tuning in!

@@gabrielepichler The reason why our data results in predominantly men in our lists is not because our algorithm discriminates, however it illustrates the art world still does. This is a very important difference of course. Doing so we measure how the diversity is changing, think of our list of artists born after 1970, which was very balanced, whereas other lists with older generations, we see the opposite.

Hi there Bethany, thank you for tuning in and for your critical comment. As we have stated in the pinned comment, we anticipated these conclusions whereas we simply have presented the top results from our survey. We are doing are very best to promote more diversity in the art world: we critically discuss the lack of diversity time and time again with these top lists, for instance, we have created a separate video and the greatest female artists. We strongly promote diversity. But not diversity for the sake of diversity. If these are the results from our survey, then we can only present these results. Altering them would make the selection less valuable from an art scientific perspective.

Let me give you an example, think about the American world series, how is it a world series If only one country takes part. How is a "survey" a legitimate/complete top list of it didn't cover all that fall in the category of artist. My issue is not with the list, im sure those artist are great, but to call them the most important is a big claim.
