Unfortunately a container ship is not going to alter course for fishing gear. They also do not have the maneuverability to avoid a buoy in their path. Jake should know this, setting in a shipping lane is a risk

I was stationed at the Submarine base in Groton CT back in the 80's. Despite the fact that the lobster boats knew that there was a travel lane for the subs to leave and enter the base. Subs have a deep draft of at least 35 feet. They still insisted on ignoring the lane and set their pots in it. When they either couldn't find them or found them damaged they would file a complaint with the US Navy. The navy usually sent a yard to to the coordinates and if it was in the travel lane the complaint was closed. The ironic part was it cost the Navy more to investigate than the lobster pot was worth.

I don't see Jake going around backstabbing and taking advantage of other crews like Sig. Jake Anderson, Josh Harris, and Johnathan Hillstrand are the best captains on the show. Sig's better than a lot of the other guys, but still does too much backstabbing. Captain Rip Carlton, Wild Bill, and Keith Colburn have got to be the worst. They spend more energy stabbing everyone else in the back than they do actually fishing. Keith is so bad he constantly puts his crew in danger. It sucks but its also partially his own fault. He set pots in a known shipping lane, and ships that size by the time they see your buoys are already going to hit them, they don't turn or stop quickly. His little fishing boat (he's a few hundred tons total) can stop in 100ft because he moves around at 2-3mph when near the pots, the cargo ship (well over 20000 tons) need 1500ft to do that because they are doing 30+ constantly, they don't plan to stop until they get near the harbour.

320 fathoms is 1920 feet, lol. Fellow fisherman here. However, we're the real deadliest catch. Not playing with pots & mediocre money, though. These boys' can't hang scalloping. We've taken 3 of them, and all 3 made it 2 1/2 days, and that's all they wanted. So, we had to pick up their slack. Sad shit.

Obviously that of the small fishing vessel. Ships the size of this container ship do not leave their Shipping lane, these boat "highways" are on everyone's charts including his own. Going to put your fishing gear in the middle of the sea, what a bad idea.

I HATE when people start referring to what they gather/hunt/fish as "product". Just staaaahp. It's crab, you're fishing for crab. I can see if he was actually "making" the crab, then it would be a product. But no, you're harvesting crab, not catching product. Fisherman first, then a businessman. But always a fisherman first.

Sorry but, what does one expect to happen when you put your string in an established shipping channel/lane? The APL ship shinned them on because they really weren't doing anything wrong by chugging along in an established and known shipping lane.... after all isn't that what they are for? So, what if someone were to plant a garden on an interstate highway, and you come zipping along in you car at 70 miles an hour and run over it. I bet your first thought is "what stupid idiot sets a garden in the middle of an interstate highway?" And if that person was to contact you on a radio to give you a bad time about running it over, I bet you would either tell them in no uncertain terms how stupid they are to expect people to dodge that garden, because it had no business being on an interstate highway or not respond because you thought, if they were that stupid, they didn't deserve a response.

I'd have to watch the episode but I highly doubt Jake actually put them IN the lane, just near it and the container ship was traveling slightly outside of the lane. Plus your example doesn't really work because he gave them plenty of warning they were there and well before they wouldn't physically be able to move out of the way. The largest container ships have a length of 400 meters, which means they have a turning radius of roughly 1.2 miles. He told them 2+ miles out. It was more akin to someone driving 35 MPH down a two lane, two way road, seeing a sign saying "Debris, right side of lane, 500 yards ahead", and still running the debris over.
