I absolutely love this movie, I showed it to my dad a few weeks ago. A professor showed it in class in college and it rocked my world. The third act of this movie and Jodie Foster’s acting makes me cry my eyes out, I lose it when she sees the celestial event and the alien civilization. “They should have sent a poet”. The novel is wonderful and certainly more complete and smarter but I adore the film too

As much as I like this movie. No one would build that. 1) They did not know if it is a doom machine. Or what it does? 2) They do not know if aliens are hostile or not. Maybe it is a beacon for invading fleet? 3) Or simply they do not know if it is fake or not. It would be kind of funny if it was hoax... In reality no one would build this device. If alians are so advanced, why they didn't come?

Contact was a very underrated movie, and one of my top 10 favorites of all time. From the sounds of it the book was more rooted in thought, while the movie was more rooted in feeling. I get the feeling I would still like the movie better than the book (especially since I, in opposite fashion as most, prefer my books non-fiction and my videos fiction), but I appreciate your explaining many of the differences. :)

This should really be adapted into a series, or mini-series even. A film can rarely do justice to a book, as a film needs to be around 2 hours long and can only fit so much information into the finished product. A series could do a deeper dive into the story and characters, and ultimately it would be fascinating to see what the scientists were up to after the book left off.

Excellent work Sir. One of the finest works of science fiction ever written. One thing often overlooked by those that have read the book, and watched the movie is.... "time'. More specifically, time travel, and the flawed human understanding of it. Time travel as we understand it is flawed. The moment the "machine" is activated, the signal that initiated its creation stopped being received. Meaning that it's transmission was terminated in the past, once its continued transmission was no longer deemed necessary. Why waste time. Statement, not question.

Contact is one of my favorite movies; however, i've never read the book. Thanks for showing it, as now I have another book to add to the collection!

I really wish Sagan had written a sequel to this. I know it isn't necessary and the story he set out to tell was told... But maaaaan I want to know what would happen next in it! ^_^ In the movie, Ellie's space dad says this was the first step and in time mankind would take another. I want to know what that other step would have been. Also. I really wish Hollywood would stop cutting parts from books when they make movies. I think everything explained here that was in the book would have been amazing to see on screen!

I remember in the book, when Ellie is having discussion with the preacher person, and at one time she asks "wouldn't have God given a unquestionable proof of his existence, like a giant crucifix in the sky?" Reader's jawdrop when Caretakers start discussing transcendental numbers. Especially coming from agnostic Sagan.

I usually come here for Star Wars content, but this was actually a good watch, or I guess listen, I've not heard of either the novel or film of Contact but it sounds like it's right up my alley, I love almost anything to do with Space and something like this where it talks about a potential coalition between different Alien races in the universe all helping each other. Kind of reminds me of Mass Effect, which I guess Mass Effect was probably created because of this. It also allows me to think, "Hmm, what if there is something like that out there and maybe they've seen us but have seen that we're not ready yet, despite our advancements or are we really alone or will we be the first civilization that goes into Space and I guess become the Aliens to other worlds." Edit: I'd actually like to see more stuff like this that isn't about Star Wars but what you're interested in and think we'd might like too.

Thanks for the video, brother. I liked this movie because it opens so much of human imagination and gives an interpretation that there may be someone/something out there. Though we cannot see it. And humanity would guard it from coming out that we are not alone in the universe. I hope that, one day, we might be able to answer that and we can take our first steps into a broader place that is exciting to see.

I read the book after seeing the movie but confess I don't remember most of the book now after 20 some years. The film is in my library and I've rewatched it many times since. My own belief is that there is, has been and will be other Life and even advanced civilizations somewhere somewhen in the universe. The problem is that Distance + Time and vice versa. The universe is so Large and Old that the likelihood that any two advanced civilizations being Close enough at the same Time fo become Aware of another much less Communicate is Slim and None. We have only been emitting our own comparitively weak EM signatures for a little over 100 years and listening for about 1/2 that. Good Luck!
