    16:31 - speaking of 'false alarms' about imminent nuclear war, after the United States and former USSR had both signed the treaty banning further testing of nuclear weapons, neither trusted one another. The Americans launched satellites into orbit, thinking that the Soviets might try to secretly continue weapon testing, perhaps on the far side of the moon. Anyway, after these specialised satellites were launched, teams monitored their returned data, looking for signs of Soviet breaches. Eventually, the satellites returned some data that was initially suggestive of a nuclear weapon, but on closer inspection the 'signal' that was recorded did not match the by-then well-known pattern for a nuclear detonation. Furthermore, the single event captured by these satellites was followed by another event, then another, another... Further investigation showed that the pulses that were detected were of high-energy gamma rays. Confusingly, the gamma rays seemed to be originating from all points of the compass, which told astronomers that whatever the source, they must be INCREDIBLY DISTANT as they were NOT originating within our own Milky Way Galaxy! For a while, scientists were flummoxed, almost unable to believe what their instruments were telling them, that the highest energy variety of light in the electromagnetic spectrum i.e. gamma rays, were being produced in enough quantities for us to detect them here on Earth, yet were clearly originating well outside our galaxy. What could possibly generate enough power to do this?! The answer was eventually forthcoming, but not until we had telescopes and computer-control able to respond to gamma ray events fast enough and match them to the origin point in the skies. The gamma rays were coming from the death of enormous stars in far-distant galaxies. These enormous stars had consumed all of their fuel and could no longer provide the enormous force to balance out the equally-crushing force of gravity seeking to crush the star. With gravity suddenly gaining the upper-hand, the star began to implode and due to the sheer size of these particular stars, the crushing never actually ended. The force of crushing was essentially infinite and a black hole was formed. It turns out that while some material and energy does stray within the event horizon of a black hole never to emerge, other material is capable of essentially orbiting the maw of the black hole and being ejected, beam-like from two poles of the black hole. This is what enables the gamma ray pulses to cover such incredible distances - because like a laser, the light energy is being collimated into these beams. It means that whenever Earth is in the line of sight of either of the poles' beams, we'll eventually receive those gamma ray pulses, however many million or billions of years later. (These were the Vela satellites and form part of the overall history of gamma-ray detection)

  • @fyggy5480

    @fyggy5480

    10 ай бұрын

    actually we can give a fairly accurate estimate. its all todo with how difficult new asteroids are to find. say you havent found any asteroids. if you take your telescopes and point them almost anywhere, you will very quickly find a new asteroid - theyre very easy to find. now if you have found 90% of all asteroids, then it becomes much more time consuming to find a new one. we can look at the data adjusted for detection capability over time and estimate where the line will likely cap out. we will never find every asteroid, but we can keep track of just how difficult it is to find new ones.

    The sad part is that people on both sides are at fault. The scientists who keep saying the world is going to end in five years because they're getting paid off by interest groups are doing their part in bolstering climate change denial, and I don't blame the people who disagree with climate change when there's so much bogus data out there. Mix that with all the crazy politicians who want to hike your taxes and destroy domestic energy production to use renewable energy that only sometimes works means that reasonable people are pushing against change because they have kids to feed.

    He has to go back into his retreat every 4 months for his existence alone will bring unfathomable terrors his wisdom alone is what brings galaxies together to try and pick at everything he knows but his knowledge is to vast and no matter how much firepower nor how good the tactics are they aren’t enough to bring him out of his “shell” and once they get him out of his “shell” they only have 5 minutes to subdue him before the universe is engulfed by darkness as he creates a new one that will share his wisdom and will eventually take over the multiverse

    @@pokepe12 Those are things that are normally used\studied in cinematography(the narration or reinforcements of the message through imagery also pertains to comics, minus the sound\music of course) and the techniques are usually broken down to their mechanical functions(camera angles, camera movements, sequential narration, audio effects, music etc..) so I don't think there is a general term that embraces all of them, that isn't on the technical side(and even on the technical side, I can't recall a good one tbh).
