Conservatives call on Speaker to resign for breaking rules of impartiality

The Speaker of the House of Commons Greg Fergus apologized Monday for recording a video tribute message honouring the outgoing interim Ontario Liberal Party leader and personal friend John Fraser at the party’s leadership convention this past weekend. He hinted there was miscommunication on how the video would be used, and said the message was not intended to be broadcasted at the event. On Dec. 4, Conservative House Leader Andrew Scheer joined the Bloc Quebecois in calling for Fergus to resign.

It’s always been the practice in Britain, who you inherited your Parliamentary system from. It’s done via secret ballots and usually such that attracts cross-party support. The Speaker usually keeps their position until they resign, but Parliament will always ensure a nominated Speaker exists prior to an election. During the term of a Speaker they hold no party and by convention, no major party will contest them in their constituency. And for context, Sir Lindsay Hoyle was from Labour. And the UK has had a large Conservative majority in this current Parliament. All they do is re-elect him as their first point of business, usually uncontested.

Well he said that was a personal friend would an NHL referee not be allowed any friends that were players either? I don't watch hockey so I don't know but why pretend all those politicians are not elected because of who they know and are friends with? We need a referee for the referee seems like if the opposition has to constantly tell them what their job expectations are. Poilievre scolded him about time being misused during question period and the last one kicked a member of the opposition out of the house for speaking her mind not to mention not screening for Nazis inviting one to be celebrated as a Ukranian hero.
