Conscription for women in Norway | DW Documentary

Norway extended compulsory military service to women in summer 2016. Women currently make up about ten percent of the Norwegian Armed Forces. All medically fit women aged between 19 and 44 years will be obliged to complete at least 19 months of military service.

Considering the amount of money the US spends on the military, the skewed military demographics, the US should have mandatory conscription. If everyone needs to serve, it may make politicians second guess whether or not it's worth spending in kids to invade a country because it could be their own kids or family members. Plus it'll probably help with respect, patriotism, job training, etc. for the conscripts.

Conscription is not for the benefit of the army, it's for the benefit of defense. Every conscript who goes on to become the average civillian will have basic knowledge of tactics, weapons skills, survival and navigation, first aid, and so on. The professional enlisted part of the army are the ones doing Norways part for NATO and the UN, while if the country is forced to mobilize against an invasion, every civillian who has this training is more than capable of fighting defensively. You need look no further than Ukraine to see the benefits of that.
