I also have a fear of sketchbooks! Sometimes I’ll do sort of a scrapbook style where I draw on random pieces of paper and glue them into a sketchbook, and honestly it looks pretty cool in the end

There was an old Star Trek Next Gen episode where a pre-teen boy was given amazing art tools. He created a beautiful wood dolphin but said: "It's not as good as the one in my head." You can love your art but I'd say that's really common. Most artists don't suffer an over abundance of hubris. Usually it's the opposite, but the rare time I met one, their art was mediocre. They thought it was amazing - wouldn't change anything - perfection. It's you striving to make it better, working toward it being like your idea which is making you grow. And that's part of what makes you a great artist.

Drawing drips always amuses me as I usually try and avoid drios when I'm actually painting. They look fabulous. A good third of my sketchbook is just for things that my eyes love. I struggle a lot with butterflies so your struggle with butterfly one was very familiar. I don't know why. I adore butterfly two but my favourite is your glorious green beetle! Despite not meeting your vision the stars of the show are definitely your sea slugs. Glorious! I hope you fall in love with sketchbooks. I find mine so freeing and they help declutter my mind. I have one that I call my scribble book that I often use when I'm trying out something new or just need to see pretty colours or get the tactile sensation of a paintbrush without any reason behind it.

A new sketchbook is always the difficult. I am the same way I always rip pages out. However the purpose of a sketchbook is for sketches and ideas. You can do anything and just trust the process of creating and not worry about it looking perfect. Its like the rough draft of a novel, you go through many versions before have the final draft. I really love watching you go out of your comfort zone and try something different and just enjoy creating.

Oh I love the first page I’m so glad you left it as it was! I am absolutely terrible at doing that, I always overwork everything 🙄

I feel ya. You know, a tip I've heard for sketchbooks is to designate a category or style for each one. Like, one is for cutesy cartoony critters. Another is for drawing people. Etc. And then something I've done is when I watch a sketchbook ideas video, I write down the ones that sound interesting to me on scrap paper and tape it inside the front cover of my current sketchbook =) The bugs are cool, and those leaf sheep and the... sea fairies? sea hedgehog? are adorable =)

Hi Rose!! I love your art style. I had a little black and white dog a few years ago that we called a "cow deer." He had the look of a cow but the excited jumps and kicks of a deer. I'd love to see a cross between the two.

Great job starting a sketchbook! It’s so intimidating to start. I almost always leave page 1 blank until I have something I really want to put there, and you chose the perfect first page with the colors. I LOVED the butterflies and cicada/beetle page and the sea creatures. They really are adorable!!!! 💜💜💜

@@RoseRequinCrafts YES! I was definitely considering starting up a bullet journal for organization, but then realized I'd spend more time designing it than using it.

Congrats on finally starting a sketch book! If you are afraid of ruining it, just buy a cheap and ugly one. You can always decorate it later if that helps. Also, using a sketchbook with that ring spine (don't know what it's called) you can simply rip out the page if you actually hate it. So don't stress too much about it. Hope that helps 💙

Hey Rose! I am so glad you conquered your fear of sketch books with bugs. I love bugs. I'm not even afraid of them anymore. I also love sea slugs! They are called nudibranchs. The branch rhymes with Bank. Isn't that a wonderful word? Like sobriquet is French for nicknames. I love giving everyone a nickname! This is all besides the point. Which is I really enjoyed watching you draw. It's the most relaxing part of my weekend. Unfortunately, I don't have any fancy terms for Rose is relaxing. Lol, that's adorable though. When I became a preschool teacher I forced myself to get over my fear of bugs so that I could teach the kids not to be scared or to just smash every single bug they see. The only thing I can't bring myself to hold is a spider. *shudders*

My friend had a fear of sketchbooks but would keep buying them, so I suggested she themed them to different things to help organise all the ideas she had. She said it worked a treat so I'm suggesting it to you now

I absolutely got into this video i dared anyone in my house to bug me while i was in the zone....i completely relate with you on all things sketchbook....i have a folder i keep all my art in from printer paper...i call that "my sketchbook" i do have a ohuhu marker book i swore i was gonna fill and break into but i only put absolutely perfect art work into it im scared to mess it up i love the honesty and bravery in this video your bug and slug pages are great you had me rolling wuth you BUTT-erfly that doeant belong. And i totaly get what you were saying about the watercolor look and wanting a picture to look as you want it and keep trying til you reach that vision....i would like seeing a watercolor picture video....i think i may pull my book out and put something in it...i always watch sketchbook videos but never do nothing with it because im so afraid of destroying but with so many of my faves throwing out these videos lately i think you just pushed the encouragement ober the edge so imma do it i think 😂 THANK YOU FOR ANOTHER GREAT VIDEO OF ART AND ENCOURAGEMENT

Have one question was watching this video one more time and noticed when your doing the butterfly picture you have a plate and utensil emoji pop up opposite of the butterfly pic....just curious what that was for did i miss something

I have like 10 half-filled sketchbooks, all with awful drawings in them. They're fun to look at ten years down the line and go "Oh, I remember when I drew that! ...Yeesh, I was bad then."

I'm the same way with journals/notebooks. But I will start one, fill in a few pages, and never open it again. Then buy a new one or six. I love the bugs! The cicada is incredible. You should try sharpie's new paint markers they are soooo smooth. And don't need to be activated. Only bummer is they are all pastel.

I am exactly the same with sketchbooks and journals. I have so many that I haven’t started because I too am scared to “ruin” them 😂. But this video gave me some confidence to just give it a try 😊 The Leaf Sheep is sooo adorable! I love your versions but I can relate to something not being quite right but being unable to put my finger on. Looking at the reference image, it looks both a little translucent and metallic to me with a glow around the leaf. Maybe watercolours would get that effect - i know you can get metallic watercolours too, that could be fun to add a very watered down metallic sheen to it. I also wonder if working on black paper instead of white would help?

"Rep was a Butthead" 😂 I think a lot of people have the same fear and also do the same thing and buy a new one, thinking it will be the one. I am like that and I keep looing at the new Ohuhu bleedproof one and want it, yet I have the old Ohuhu marker sketchbook, which isn't even 10% full. Why do I need bleedproof when I can't even fill the pages I have now? Spoiler alert, I will totally get one soon anyway 😝

@@RoseRequinCrafts I remember buying a grey paper one as they were popular and I've only used a couple of pages and I've never really done anything with it, that you couldn't use white paper for. Yet I few months back, I kept seeing people use the tan ones and started looking at prices. Why on earth so I need tan paper? Also why do I have pencils on my Amazon wishlist when I already have so many kinds and many I don't use? It is a mystery 🤣

I was wondering how you would handle the little white cactus spines. I was thinking white gel pen. But acrylic and pencil is a great solution too and definitely seems more your style.

I love that beetle, too! I had an idea when you turned to the next page after you had finished the "bug" page. On the opposite side of that page, some of the colors had really bled through. It was pretty in a different way from the first side. I thought it might be fun/cool to do something with those bleed-throughs. What do YOU think? 😉
