Conquering Giants: My First Tree Felling Experience

I tackle a significant milestone: felling a massive 7,200-pound poplar tree. While I'm no stranger to chainsaws, stepping up to cut down such a large tree was a whole new level of challenge, given my limited experience with big timber.
In this video, I take you through the entire process, from the initial cuts to the final fall, sharing my thoughts and the techniques I learned along the way. This poplar is set to yield approximately 1.3 cords of wood, which is vital for heating our home through the tough winter months. Considering we need about 7 cords annually and each cord costs roughly $280 CAD, this task isn’t just about overcoming fears-it's economically essential.
Despite my anxieties about handling such a daunting task untrained, the thrill of the experience was undeniable. I kept a vigilant eye on the tree's top, as experienced lumberjacks advise, to gauge its movement and ensure safety. This approach not only kept me safe but also deepened my respect for the art of tree felling.
Watch as I navigate the tension, focus, and excitement of cutting down my first giant. It’s a blend of fear, respect, and adrenaline-truly a remarkable experience. If you're curious about what it takes to fell a big tree and how to do it safely, this video is for you. Remember, sometimes the biggest challenges bring the greatest rewards

Fantastic job dropping your first big tree Aaron! It's almost like getting laid for the first time. Your nervous, unsure how it's going to go then your balls deep having a blast. Always make sure to be aware of what's going on in the trees above you. And I would also look into getting a pair of safety pants or some chaps. I cut my leg many years ago with a saw and was lucky to survive it. Loving the content my friend. Cheers

Great milestone indeed! Are you sending any of your logs through your sawmill? Or is this exclusive to firewood pile?

Nothing like dropping trees......I have a helpful hint or two.....after cutting your wedge out of the face of the tree facing the direction you want, your cut on the backside should start high and angle down to the wedge you cut out. This will help you lessen the chances of the tree kicking back at you. Its always a possibility, but any help is always a good idea. If you have a few metal wedges, you can use the method i mentioned and cut most of the way thru, and drive the wedges to finish it off if its one that you think will argue with the direction you want it to go. Other than that, you did awesome and heres to many many many many more to keep warm.....lol.
