CONGO RIVER - EXPEDITION - FLEUVE CONGO

This video illustrates various aspects of the life and the environment along the Congo River during an international expedition sampling fish, birds, bats, spiders, lichen, plants, limnology and investigating geography and local knowledge. Other aspects include life aboard the boat, camping in the villages and population's life along the river. This was a preparatory expedition in 2009 with a small team. The main expedition took place in 2010 : • CONGO RIVER BIODIVERSI...
This expedition was carried on in close collaboration between Congoleese researchers and foreign researchers. The collaboration was excellent and also during the main expedition in 2010. All our THANKS are adressed to the Congoleese population, researchers ,authorities and colleagues who made those expeditions possible. The expedition were implemented by the Africa Museum, the Royal Institute of Natural Sciences and the Botanical Garden (Belgium) together with the Universities of Kisangani, and Kinshasa (DR Congo), the K.U. Leuven, R.U. Gent and V.U. Brussels (Belgium) and Davis, California (USA).
NOTE ON TAXONOMICAL WORK: When animal taxons are studied by researchers, specifically taxonomists, often it is necessary to capture them (insects, butterflies ,rats, snakes etc....) to describe them and this may hurt people who do not understand why this is done. But the scientific work has not option here in the very great majority of cases. The description of animals is necessary for scientific work. Knowing an animal that carries a disease for example is very important to adress this issue and help human population that are at risk. This is the price to increase the knowledge, else we would be in a world rejecting sciences and progress could not be carried on. There is often a balance here that one has to evaluate before rejecting an action without knowing why it was implemented. Please, note that I am not a taxononomist and that this could be better expressed than here !
OBJECTIVES This video has no financial objectives. It's educational and cultural. It is hoped that it can contribute, however modestly, to encourage friendship between populations over the world beyond cultural differences.
NOTE: This video had reached 503 175 views on May 25th 2021 ! (10 000 to 12 000 new views per day!). For unknown reasons (youtube promoting change ?) this suddently ended. I then removed and slightly edited it before reloading.
