Congestion Pricing and Quality of Life

Bumper to bumper traffic reduces the quality of life in New York City. With congestion pricing, 100,000 fewer vehicles will enter Manhattan every day. Less traffic means cleaner air, safer streets, less time wasted sitting in gridlock - and a better quality of life for all of us.

How typical of NY politicians does not work in London, but they’re going to make is work here. I know the problem 23 MTA board members only make $192.000 per year and the president $350.000. Once the congestion pricing is in, they can give themselves a raise and devote more time to fixing the problem. (like the Fulton Street Mall) Keep up all the good work.

Another cash grab, look how NYC roads look, NY has some of the highest tolls in the country but yet has some of the worst roads and this is with steady fee increases. Most people aren’t critical thinkers so they think this is for the “environment”. If they have fees for the congestion zone, all that is going to do is double the congestion outside the zone with people trying to avoid the fees by staying outside of the zone. They keep using London as a model but a quick search would show you that the London model failed. It worked for a few years and they are now back to the same gridlock only worse outside the zone. Search “How congestion pricing has impacted London.” Oh yeah, have fun with your higher grocery/restaurant prices in the zone, trucks delivering in the zone will of course have to raise their delivery prices which will then be passed on to you, the consumer. If you’re wealthy shouldn’t be a biggie.

@@kirkrotger9208 I can give many reasons why this is impractical, but I can give something that is a bit more. We have all used horse drawn carriages and boats for millennia as quick and reliable means of transportation. A car is often used as a replacement of horses, as much as I think equestrian travel should come back, it probably won't come back anytime soon. And of course there is a reason not everyone owned their own horse. What many cities are trying to do right now is become nearly car free. The Dutch concept is "autoluw" or car-lite. That does not mean entirely car free, just so that very few people actually need to drive, and the reason for driving is something like deliveries or moving or going out of town, not for commuting or errands. Although those that want to drive would still be able to. In the long term the best approach would be to cut off all through traffic so drivers are redirected onto the highways if they want to travel through NYC. Emergency vehicles, bicycles, pedestrians, and public transit would always be allowed to cut through; while these vehicles might be slowed by gates they would not be stuck in traffic during emergency response. But in the short term anything to discourage rat running is a win as it reduces pollution and causes traffic evaporation.

Delivery will like be cheaper because of fuel savings and labor savings and savings in wear and tear. Park and Ride already exists in much of NYC.
