Cone area & port area/understanding Cone area is king

An example of cone area in relation to port area using two different enclosure’s to show a visual reference. Bass is the movement of air. Who ever moves the most air is the loudest all other factors being equal.

    10:45 is at least 12 ft^3 net because of the need to include or factor in the deep ass cutouts which will add an extra cubic foot even with the drivers being installed. Most builders don't account for this which is why their tuning/peak freq ends up being different then what was intended when removing the vehicles cabin peak freq from the equation. Also, using deep ass cutouts (aka 3+ baffles) begins to restrict airflow from behind the subwoofer on the bottom side of the baffle. Think about it. Air would need to be pushed straight down rather than out to the sides as with double baffles which is why I prefer using bracing over 3-4 baffles. Just some food for thought for viewers to keep in mind when building.

    Doing the same today. Im taking out my evl d4 12s and putting my kicker d4 compvx12s . What I have pick up on is i will use less power with the kickers but have more output. Mostly cause of the cone area difference. There is a 1000 rms watts difference between each pairs kicker being the most efficient. Plus I need to go easy on my alternator before I end up buying a new alternator sooner than I planned.

    There is a misconception about how sound travels. The air doesn't move from one location to another. Instead the Soundwave generated by the woofer ( or tweeter also infact) gives it's energy to the air and the air molecules gives its energy to the air right next to it that's why you can put a shirt or hair in a windo rolled down and it will stay in place instead of flying away. Just a little bit of useless information about sound and how it travels. Great video man, keep them coming.

    I was waiting for a video like this from you I wanted to know if I could get away with 2 4 inch diameter aeroports instead of 1 8 inch aeroport for 2 audiopipe bdc4 12s on 4k rms I used 2 4inch aeroports for a single 15 build and it sounds really good but on the lower frequencies like 25 down to 16 hz I can hear chaffing noises or like too much air trying to be pushed out

  • @DTW-bx2vy

    @DTW-bx2vy

    3 жыл бұрын

    What you are actually hearing at those lower frequencies is the mechanical movement of the spider, air moving threw the venting holes in the basket located by the voice coil, & air moving threw the venting in the end of the magnets motor structure. In all honesty a larger port would not help with the port noise issue at lower Hz frequencies, being it is the Audiopipe - TXX-BDC4 12" subwoofer's design flaws that are causing the problem. Take both subs out of the enclosure & run them free-air to be able to hear if the problem still exists when you play at 25Hz down to 16Hz. I bet it is the subwoofer instead of your port size causing the sound your hearing. Let me know if that was the issue causing the problem.

    Don’t waste your time with 45’s.. no difference with a box with or without one. No programs accounted for it.... none... it’s just Bass myth. Air is like water it will go where there is the least resistance. But putting them in won’t hurt either. If you want them do it, but it does nothing other than shrink the original volume you had at first

    I have 2 boxes for my meso 12. One is 1.7 net (prefab) with a 3" precision port 10 inches long tuned to approx 31hz. that's like 7 sq inches of port area. I have another box I built 2 cubic feet net with a slot port area of 33 square inches tuned to 33 hz, CT sounds wants 1.5 net with 40square inches and that seems impossible in sub box pro. port is like 4 foot long. the small 3" port gets low and sounds better overall. the bigger box may hit slightly harder near tuning but the smaller port is crisp and punchy. My steering wheel shakes with only 7 square inches. Also this is in a crew cab f-150 so I can hear everything with no port noise.. Makes no sense.

    The Skar would see more power and thusly move more air.. theoretically the 12’s would win but the ohm load to high so after impedance rise they would see very little power and so wouldn’t be moving the air they could. Under the right power they could destroy Skar.

    In spl how much does cabin size play a roll in final outcome? My bigger system (2x15 in ported 7 cube net enclosure on 2k amp) is in a 2010 grand caravan my little system 1 10" in ported 1.5 net on 1.2k amp) is in a 95 mustang gt convertible, obviously the caravan is bigger and badder in every way but on a woofer to thump ratio the mustang is easily more impressive. Your hair and clothes start vibrating at way lower volume levels in the mustang.

  • @M.B.Enclosures

    @M.B.Enclosures

    3 жыл бұрын

    Lol...you already have your answer. Cabin plays a part. When though more air is moving with the larger subs it’s in a bigger confined space it still should be louder, but if you put that same cone area in the mustang you be louder at lower volume levels because the confined space smaller theoretically... you could also lose by going to much cone area because the bass wave wouldn’t develop in such a small area with larger subs. That is why the 10” so impressive even though it not as loud as the 15’s

    3:45 what a waste of money that is (Q-class imo) IF loud bass is his goal. Kicker = SQ, not loud deep bass unfortunately. I wonder if it'll even break a 150 dB sealed on glass.

    Waste of money? That’s an opinion for sure. I am looking more for sq. I’m not worried if it goes to 150. Though we all know it’s gonna do much more.

    @@Big_Bambu if your looking for sq a massive over sized box with a huge port isn’t best choice. A standard 12 calls for 2.25-2.5 cubes with the attention of running let’s say 500 watts for arguments sake, when you put that woofer in a 2.5 cube box (after displacement) that woofer is working just as hard as the box is, it’s at its peak efficiency. Now when you take the same woofer and put it in a small box say 1.75 the woofer will now be harder to push in that enclosure so in return now we put 1500 watts on it and now that woofer is over powering the enclosure and allowing it to handle that power with what’s called cone control when you tune a box at say 35hz it will play an octave higher and octave lower with the intention you have your port per square calculated correctly for a flat response. When you have a bigger enclosure it will start to drop db per frequency until it’s no longer audible and the woofer is about to jump out the box, it has now lost cone control. When you shrink that box down below recommended size say by hypothetical 20% below at those lower frequencies the woofer will have more cone control. I can keep babbling but where I’m going with this is don’t think because the box is 12 cubes for 4 12s that it’s just gonna sound better and more sq those 12s are gonna work there asses off with the power he said he will run on them and most likely be very peaky.

    @@nicdudash9288 have u looked at the specs for sq on the kicker webpage? It calls for 3.25 cubes per sub for sq, with a port of 3x13.

    @@Big_Bambu and I ask when has kicker ever won a sound quality comp? There is a reason they sold out to Walmart and Kmart. Can they sound good? Sure to someone that hasn’t heard true sound quality but in my many years of being in car audio I have yet to hear a kicker woofer that I was just beside myself at how it sounded. And 3.5 cubes for a 12 is wayyy too big that woofer is practically free airing in the box. There is a reason that 99.9% of other manufacturers recommend 2.25-2.5 cubes for a 12 and I say 99.9% because the .1% is kicker that doesn’t agree 🤔

    @@nicdudash9288 u sure ask a lot of questions. Here is a question for u. Are u that worried about my system that U have to give complete dissertations on why u think it will not sound up to your level of expertise? This is my system. I’m building it the way that I want it to sound. Did u ever take that into consideration?
