This is a short video explaining a nice combination I found and how it came about and how you could reproduce it or make variations of your own.

It looks really nice. Is there a way of getting other colors for the Autumn's Crystal? It has a rabbit's hair quality to it.

I am still new and just getting into mixing my own glazes. What to are you using for testing the specific gravity? Love your work.

I love your book! Why do you let the liner glaze dry overnight?

So is the autumn red actually the correct formula for the base?

You have a lot of "I did this, saw what it did, and then I did this..." Do you run a small glaze test kiln, or do you just have a ton of firings? I run about 1-2 glaze firings (we run two programs at my studio: 1-2 of each/week) but even with that fairly quick turnover, running that many consecutive tests would take 3-4 weeks. Love your videos, they are a tremendous help to me, a teacher who HATED glazing when I was at university.. Cheers.

This is great, thank you John! I'm wondering what temperature / firing schedule you would use to get those effects.

Hi John, is the Satin Black pretty food safe? I haven't used too much Mason Stain so I don't know the formulation. Since you are glazing it inside your bowl, I assume it's not leaching anything.

Well, Food safe means no lead or cadmium, so technically it is food safe. (not to be a smart ass but it is complicated) And "not leaching anything" is a very high bar. I have not tested it but am not worried. But actual testing is up to you because of your materials and firing make all the difference. So you will have to do it on your own. I have a PDF on my website called Is It Food Safe which is over 20 pages discussing this.

Because the bowls are too thin to do it on the same day. Otherwise it doesn't get a good coat on the outside.

OK, but in the book it does not list Nepheline syenite as an ingredient but it does on your video ? Also the Silica and whiting are different quantities to the book ?

You are right...i see I added the NS to the list and it pushed all the numbers down. So it should be like in the book with the colorants listed above.

Fantastic ! sort of new to mixing my own glazes, so in the early stages of trying to understand the chemistry. Only started pottery in March 2017 and want to get into the science of the craft. Making test tiles and getting some raw materials this week. ... Thanks for confirming the recipe.
