Hello potter's. it's very rare that I give out glaze recipes and it's even more rare that I give out such a valuable one. this is Randy's red glaze recipe ment for cone 56 oxidation kilns. I have labeled the specific gravity in the recipe in the video as well as down below in this description.
start gearing up for the holidays as we might take a tiny week long break so that we can enjoy our families or Netflix accounts.
this video features the very talented Lindsey.M.Dillon, she is my partner in clay and I'm very happy to have her in this episode. please check out her work the links will be down below right before the recipe.

    Hello Dante - been watching your videos and have to send a big thanks and also had a quick question. You've been really helpful and I'm glad you are willing to share your knowledge. Thank you. After watching your video on making glazes - I decided to give it a try. While my first attempt wasn't a success, I feel I've caught the bug and really want my next recipe to turn out. I posted a question on Glazy but maybe that's not the best place for beginner questions?? Anywho - where's the best place to get answers to obvious (but not to me) questions regarding glaze recipes? I'm happy to support, via Patreon or other, any responsive resource. Thanks again. J

    red iron oxide and the gerstly borate are making that speck that your wondering about... i think... i use a 20 x 5 recipe and also try one recipe at a time of different family. the 20 x 5 recipe shows you what each part of the recipe do when you compare to different families, ex i am messing around with the 20 x5 and a clay and gerstly recipe... i play with the same amount of colorant in each and it turns out that you can start to pick out which things are doing what effects.

    Danté, first off, thank you for the top notch videos you share! In this video you speak of "LUMOS" glaze that you use on an over lap at the top section of a bowl (time stamp 17:47). May I inquire on the recipe for this glaze, or where I may obtain it?? Love that cascading effect it gives on your application!! Many mahalo's... Nick in Latrobe PA

    Should mention that rio, is specifically "spanish red iron".... The yellow is the iron cristalizing with gertsley, (like teadust)

    Great video (BBC, haha), anyway, I've been having some issues with pitting and/or running with glazes with SG of 1.48 - 1.57. Do you always keep your SG at 1.4 or just Randy's Red?

  • @EarthNationCeramics

    @EarthNationCeramics

    it's just Randy's red that I keep at 1.4. that's probably my highest gravity glaze. I find that 1.5 to 1.6 is a little too high for most places and the base for me is about 1.3 or 1.35 for the high majority of my stuff

  • @1195mmg

    You should be able to calculate a percentage by weight of water to add to get your desired specific gravity. Remember that specific gravity is essentially the same thing as density. So for water alone, 1g = 1ml. Meaning you shouldn't need the graduated cylinder. It might vary slightly depending on how dry the chemicals are and the ambient humidity, but it should give a good approximation.

    Red is hard. I've mixed that glaze up before and I will tell you you have to mix it up very well for at least 20 seconds every time you use it and it works better on the inside of vessels to get the silicone carbide to really work. That being said I don't have a special Kiln schedule I just go straight up and down from cone 6

    I also did a bunch of test firings on this glaze with different ramps. My recipe is slightly different to yours. Here is the video kzread.info/dash/bejne/aHuCp8uqaaS-o5c.html Amazing differences. I tried cooling slow and fast but it seems to like fast cooling from a high Cone 6, almost 7 and then a soak at 1750F for an hour. What was your firing schedule. I will try it now on B-mix5 and a red clay body to see the difference. Stay safe in California and thanks for doing the videos
