It would be great for seasteading creating floating platforms to build homes, power plants, and farms for living on the surface of the sea.

Absolutely. I was thinking the same thing. We could do so much with ferrocement. I'd love to seastead. Get me the hell out of here lol. :) I love your line of thinking Dan. Someone who can think outside of the box.

What about concrete with FRP rebar? It seems like that would be ideal for ship building.

Yes they are built not ships but barges and some of them are enormous, they are also used to float houses.

Hallo!: could you please provide a reference for a concrete mix formula suitable for use in sea boats hulls? Have you ever tested using volcano ash, as in Rome concrete, for a salty water resistant concrete? Resistence, weight by sq meter data for thin concrete walls? Gesund +

Do look into floating islands and boats with eps (encapsulated polystyrene/styrofoam). The density of the styrofoam matters a lot, as does the strength of the concrete and it's components. For example, fiberglass-reinforced concrete is a lot stronger than plain concrete, and plastic-fiber-reinforced concrete is in between but doesn't last as long when soaked.

@@samisum8888 There are other materials which can be added to concrete for certain applications, and different paints and coatings to keep it watertight, so your ship doesn't get water.

I meant reinforced concrete, with some kind of Iron armature, a net could be good. My concept in styropor was having a double hull, outer side thick as to wear structural load, the inner, thin, with space between both divided in boxes, space filled with expanded polystirene for insulation purposes. A German gliding bomb, BV-246 had concrete wings, patents exist for concrete wing making, see Homebuilt Aircraft site. The Karlsruhe tech 'Concrete car that works', 4 mm thick wall, was already discussed. Blessings +

They are using kitchen aide???!!?! To mix concrète!!!!!!???!! Very smart.

Howdy Choco! First, awesome name! Second, that’s a Hobart mixer. Similar to a kitchen aid but is much beefier and is specified by ASTM C 305. We don’t use it to mix concrete but mortar for laboratory tests. Hope that answers your question.

Hello! I’m still in a dream/planning mode regarding my future boat project that hopefully will soon come true. I was recently told by a friend that he knows someone that have constructed a motor vessel by using concrete as main material for the hull. However have not seen this vessel test, but it took some time to swallow the fact that this method might be my solution, mainly because the relative low cost of making it. Do you guys, or any other have some good advice for me how to get some help with the hull, shape planning? Like someone that can help me with the basic drawing, so that she will float basically (haha) that would be helpful. I do understand that the hull thickness might just be over the normal size compare to steal or aluminum hull.. I’m thinking a small motor vessel, not over 39 ft.. anyway Thanks for this video.😅

Making ferrocement boats is not a good idea today. The hulls need to be too thick to protect the steel reinforcing from water. In the 21st century one would instead use basalt concrete reinforcing thus being able to make a thinshell hull that is stronger than a ferrocement hull but much lighter and using far less material.

Agreed, I would add there are plenty of other technologies available to make the concrete stronger and more resilient to the chlorides and sulfates in the water. Its not just the steel that is susceptible to corrosion. Concrete can also deteriorate from Calcium-oxychloride formation.

@@IntelligentConcrete Of course I agree. But my point was NO ONE in their right mind would use steel reinforcing if building a concret ship today

Carbon reinforced concrete might be a revolution in boat building. Its about 50% lighter than ferrocement, so you save 50% concrete and the carbon fiber is the same price as steel (total).

@@IntelligentConcrete How about Concrete Canvas coated with Flex Paste. I think the worst part about building your boat is not the hull, it's all the finishing. I'm sure there's 1000's of hulls out there sitting and waiting for the finishing touches.

These guys - www.ferroglobe.com/products/silica-fume/ - are on our doorstep (who needs clean air?). Where would you use their (product silica-fume) instead of colloidal silica? And why is colloidal silica so expensive and scarce when there is a whole mountain of raw material?
