Hi Thank you for doing this. It was good to watch although I would have loved to see you do the foundation and the rebar you mentioned inside. I'd love to see how you do your front yard. Question: Would you recommend deeper foundation like 2ft instead of the 8inches you did? What would be the pros and cons. Thank you.

Emmanuel, the only reason you would increase the depth of the foundation would be if you were going 10 to 12 feet high with your column. What is important is the width. Needs to be wide enough so the column doesn't tilt when the ground becomes wet. 8 inches with Rebar is more than sufficient. 3' x 3' is sufficient width for up to a 6 foot column. If you're going to go a little taller on your column you may want to go 4 x 4 on your foundation. It's going to be a few months before I do my front fence. My front yard is 380 feet and the cost is going to be a little steep. Concerning the Rebar, 4 rebar are running north and south and 4 are running east and west equally spaced will be sufficient. The Rebar should stop about 2 inches from the edge of the form. You can purchase little feet from a local hardware store to lift the Rebar up off the ground so that it is positioned near the center of the depth of the form. You then tie 4 rebaror that will extend straight up through the center of column. These rebars can be about 6 to 8 inches apart or an 8 square. Hope this helps. The design and layout of your Rebar is very forgiving it is there only to support the concrete.

@@Dan-TheHandyMan Much appreciate your response!! I'm new at this so your video has been quite helpful. If you don't mind a few more questions: 1. Would you leave the form i.e. the 2x8 buried i.e. covered up in the foundation? 2. What do you think of dressing the cinder blocks with red brick? Any gotcha's? 3. I am in Texas and we have clay soil. Any thoughts?Thank you.

@@emmanuelmordi4458 After about 24 hours or you can wait longer if you want but not necessary to wait any longer than 72 hours you would remove the forms boards from around the concrete. If you leave the board in the ground eventually they decay and leave a space between the ground and the foundation and that could potentially weaken the strength of the foundation. I live in South Florida and we are basically just sand your clay dirt is much stronger so the 8 inches deep 3'x 3' foundation is more than sufficient. Placing red brick around the cinderblock would be an aesthetic choice. Normally when you use cinderblock you put stucco around it with a knockdown finish, however, that is more of a Florida type style. If you're going to use redbrick there actually isn't any reason to use cinderblock at all. Redbrick would take longer and is a little more complicated keeping things level but makes a beautiful column. With the redbrick, you will need to put mortar between each layer brick and then when you're done, fill the column with concrete.

Within four hours, if your foot does not leave an impression when you step on the slab you are good to set the blocks. You may want wait 24 hours before filling the columns with concrete.

No mortar between blocks. The pour inside of the blocks with the rebar holds everything together. You level the blocks using small plastic levelers you can get from home depot.

Been working in the hardscape industry a couple decades now......so I'm just starting to know enough to be dangerous. Having said that, I'm curious has to how you can get away with such a shallow grave for your conduit. Anything around here is almost always a minimum of 18"

40cm X 40cm is the outer size, I do not know the inner size. The block looks to be about 2.5 -3 cm thick so that would give us about a 35cm X 35cm inner measurement.

I'm sorry I did not respond to your comment in a timely manner , somehow I missed it. I do want to respond in case someone else reads the question and has the same concerns. There is no mortar between the bricks. The reason for this is the columns are going to be completely filled with concrete. This will hold the bricks in place and make the columns solid and sturdy. However, because you're not using mortar which has two purposes, attaching the bricks to each, and to level the bricks as you go up higher on the columns. Do not forget to use the little tabs to make sure that the bricks are level as you stack them on e one another.
