For New Year’s Eve 2017 we visit the Berlin salon of Sara Itzig Levy, whose home was a meeting place for literary and musical giants, including Bach’s eldest sons and the young Felix Mendelssohn, Levy’s grandnephew. This Levy-inspired program includes several works from her legendary collection, including a W. F. Bach flute concerto and a C. P. E. Bach double concerto for fortepiano and harpsichord-a work closely connected with our legendary hostess, who played one of the solo parts at its 1788 première.

Is the harpsichord just playing the strings' parts?

Hi Meghan, the harpsichord usually plays chords with some connective melody in the treble. It doesn't double the strings, but rather compliments those parts.

@@ArsLyricaHouston to add ok, I forget the name of the exact strategy but a lot of brouque music doesn't have proper harpsichord parts, they usually just have chords but the harpsichord players job with that is to improvise around the cords and music given, I don't remember if Telemon used that strategy for the harpsichord in this piece but it's always something to consider.

@@seabassa.m.665 The harpsichord part is omitted from the original parts and also lacks a score. At least in what I've been able to find. I've created an edition for score purposes and clean parts, but writing a harpsichord part has been difficult.

The intonation of the natural horn might not be as perfect as we are used to from highly mastered studio recordings of modern orchestras, but the lovely sound of natural horns cannot be beat. So much sweeter and warmer than modern horns. Having said that, I love modern horn also. ;-)

@@sheldonbazinga3985 Well, I'm sure the horns are copies. And although I also occasionally hear out-of-tune notes, the overall sound is still wonderful to my ear. As you can guess, playing a valveless trumpet or horn perfectly in tune is almost impossible. Sometimes, small holes are added so that the player can fine-tune some notes; but, some might consider that cheating. ;-)

Impensable!@@jasoncastle
