As a used to be woodwind player...this is one of the Baddest! Deep horn concertos I've ever heard. Great composition to use for a youngster of some music conservatory to display their bass horn virtuoso accomplishment in a recital, I'll say! Very European English..the sonorority and harmony. Seems ancient in fibre and spirit. Only Ralph Von Williams can capture that kind or long standing culture to transform it into a musical portrait of the English Soul. Well.......maybe Gustav Holts also.

A piece that truly opened my eyes as a composer. And this is probably one of the most beautiful renditions I've ever heard.

Yes it is! The tuba (conventionally considered the 'underdog' of the orchestra) can TOO have competent and quite finesse solo qualities enough to merit a concerto written for it, as Ralph certainly has proven it!

i love the way he drags. ive never said that about music stuff but holy wow this guy's playing pulls you with him. its intentional and very confidently just slightly behind and its great for anticipation. love his playing :)

So impressive. Beautiful articulation and clarity! So often the horn gets buried by the orchestra, even as the solo instrument. Another awesome recording from Derek.

Derek, this is a performance with the freshness as if all were hearing the VW for the first time. Beautifully expressed, with orchestra/solo balance that would rival any studio recording. Thanks for the effortless high Ab and for the pedal Gb in the 3rd movement cadenza (a la GP).

This performance was trash. Jis tone is from hell. Splitting is 1 of the worst tuba sounds. 4:30-4:40, he's far out of tune.

Simon I couldn’t disagree more with you. Derek played the snot out of this thing. Even Harvey Phillips split a note here of there- not often, and Derek didn’t split many and none so badly as to destroy the integrity of the line. Playing this instrument is not easy. A synthesizer could do the job with a lot fewer inconsistencies, but it would lose the communication clear in Derek’s playing. I have to say it’s a nice change from hearing it on a Bessophone. I dig the sound on the B&S.

Did you ever hear the tragedy of the Yamayork? I thought not. It's not a story Eastman would tell you. It's a Yamaha legend. The Yamayork was a 6/4 BAT, so powerful and so thicc sounding it could use its meaty tone to influence the audition panel to create tuba jobs... It had such unrivaled craftsmanship, it could even keep college freshmen employed. The craftsmanship of Yamaha is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural. It became so powerful… the only thing it was afraid of was getting copied, which eventually, of course, it was. Unfortunately, one was sold on tubenet, then it was copied and sold at 1/4th of the price. Ironic. It could save other tubas from being copied by Chinese companies and sold at a fraction of the cost, but not itself.

This is what you call non-mainstream classical music. When folks talk of or hear of classical music, they first think of mozart, beethoven and brahms....and Tchaikovsky works. Hardly Ralph Von Williams, Gustave Holtz, Shastakivich, etc...

Hands down the best performance I've ever heard of this concerto. The second movement is to die for. Well done!

Not dumping on you, but you have full reign in cadenzas to play whatever you want as long as it sounds good. It’s a very modern thing to only play what’s written for cadenzas.

Knowing nothing about Tuba playing, and totally aside from the finesse and technique involved, it must require an enormous amount of lung power to play this, no? I would think that people involved in competitive swimming might have the lung power, at least, to be decent tuba players..

As a tuba player, yes it's insane, and his articulation as well is so good.

Good for a live show but not as effective as a landmark recording.

Looking at the comments, most of you guys know very little about 🎶music. This tuba soloist is CLEARLY AN AMATEUR!!!

@@Luigi17891 From the opening seconds and throughout the entire 1st mvmnt you hear a lot of splatting. Tuba aren't supposed to do that. His sound is far from the fullness that a tuba is supposed to have. (I thought he was using a Euphonium) LOL. The 2nd mvmnt may have been worst. He drags, has no breath control and once again a very weak sound. Maybe he should try the Euphonium. In other words, his version of this solo is pure shit. 😝

I get you don't like the performance or interpretation, fine. But don't make up notions about a sound that a great percentage of tubists aspire to achieve and most will never. I'm really curious to hear what you sound like. As for the 2nd movement, have you ever heard of... rubato?... musicality? And yes, sadly us tubists have to breathe, very unfortunate that the human body isn't aptly adapted for playing the tuba optimally. Just a sad, naïve comment, do better, I hope you have a nice day.

@@simonlittle4461 Can we hear your rendition of this piece? Also, he's probably playing an F tuba (common for this concerto), which has a much lighter sound. As a low brass musician myself, I'm thoroughly impressed by Derek's articulations. No splatting here. And my god, if the second movement is too slow for you, fine, but be aware of artistic liberties like rubato.

At 4:30-4:40 his low notes were far out of tune.

One of the worst renditions yet. The soloist splats!!! That's a big No No for the tuba. He needs to try the Euphonium. A tuba takes too much air that this boy doesn't have. He's often out of tune!! Take this video down!!
