I work for an operator as a Manta Ray tour guide. We don't allow them to be used on the boat and when we explain why to our guests, they are often surprised to learn they are a safety issue

Memories are short. These were banned after they appeared in the '60s due to drowning deaths caused by panic when the snorkel blocks due to waves etc (especially kids). Two of my friends died. It is better to just learn how to use a regular mask and snorkel. I was surprised when these came out again.

I 😢and my family snorkel all the time with these full face masks. Major upgrade from the old two piece. Works great for breathing and have extra water chamber for easier breathing. No problem works great.

I noticed that they're made out of plastic where a quality mask has tempered glass. I can imagine it imploding plus as others say you can't equalize pressure. Even for surface swimming it's going to scratch easily.

Great share, thank you. My grandmother was going to try one, Temu sells them cheap but I had the same concern with the large cavity and long tube, how does the exhaled breath make it out. Thanks again for such an informative share

I've been wearing one while swimming for 7 years. No issues at all

Another concern is that there is no way to pinch your nose to equalize inner ear pressure if going down more than 4 or 5 feet. How many ruptured eardrums do these cause every year?

So I watched this and didn't learn what causes the issue. Water getting in, not getting fresh air? How can we use them properly?

When you use a snorkel, you exchange all the air from the snorkel and your lungs with each breath. There is too much air in the unit and when you exhale, the air is not exchanged for fresh. You're giving yourself CO2 poisoning. They're really dangerous.

yea its because the people who tend to buy them and use them are tourist who have very little experience in the water, especially asian/chinese tourist, you can even see some walking by in the end of the video holding full face masks.

Why is it the mask? You didn’t explain?

Jim said at 2:08. Malfunction, poor build quality, or bad fit can cause you to continously rebreathe your own exhaled air and not get fresh oxygen. Also in rough water it can close on you to prevent water from coming in but also air too

It's not the mask. It's their inability to wear it properly. User mistake.

Unfortunately that's not correct, we have had A LOT of drownings and deaths due to these masks

It IS no doubt the mask. Full face snorkel masks are responsible for a 70% increase in the snorkel deaths of tourists in Hawaii. Those masks should be banned. They’re dangerous and deadly.
