Concept Art Character Design

Фильм және анимация

As part of our ongoing Character Squad Challenge, we're exploring what makes a squad of characters work, how to create personalities that resonate with viewers, and how the pros use archetypes to achieve these goals. This is the second part of a four-week challenge, and we're excited to have you join us on this journey.
The Hulk, Worf, Drax - this is the BRUTE archetype. Join me as we talk about designing and painting a brute character archetype, and we'll cover all the important considerations that a pro concept artist needs to keep in mind when creating this type of character.
If you're interested in participating in the challenge, we'd love for you to join our amazing Discord community ( / discord ) where you can connect with other talented artists and share your work. Don't worry if you're not a pro yet - this challenge is a great way to improve your skills and build a killer portfolio, no matter where you're at in your artistic journey.
So come on in and let's explore the world of concept art characters together!

  • @fowlerillus

    @fowlerillus

    I'm not sure honestly. I sincerely don't remember what got me started using that red but I think it came from painting people and creatures more than anatomical paintings. That could definitely be a subconscious factor though!

    Hey @hardyfowler, loving your content (I've only recently found your channel). Can I ask a boring Photoshop question? How are you flicking the brush opacity up and down while you're rendering? I noticed particularly when you were doing the base orange render on his face that the brush opacity was flicking between 30-60-90 constantly. Again, thanks for your content. It's really inspiring and this video series is great as I'm trying to build a portfolio right now. Thanks for all the hard work 👍👍 Much love, from London, England

  • @fowlerillus

    @fowlerillus

    Always happy to talk Photoshop. You can adjust brush opacity with keyboard shortcuts. Just hit the number and it will adjust opacity by factors of ten (so 3=30, 9=90 etc,). You can also adjust flow in much the same way but just hold shift and then hit the numbers. Keyboard shortcuts are the best!

  • @fowlerillus

    @fowlerillus

    Жыл бұрын

    Welcome and thanks! It's a process of very slowly building up tones with low flow and opacity (so you have control) and then refining by picking up colors with the dropper tool and then laying them back down repeatedly which has an averaging effect that smoothes things out. That's it in a nutshell.

    Okay Hardy I hope this isn't rude or unprofessional to ask, but do you have any brush packs available for sale? The brushes you sketch and paint with seem so clean on the initial and ending stroke. I know there are some artists out there who think it's unprofessional to ask, but I thought I would give it a shot 🤷‍♂

    Standard photoshop round brush. I am adjusting the hardness quite often but holding down shift and using the bracket keys but other than that, it's more about keeping flow and opacity very low and tapping repeatedly to get control
