Props to my man Subatai. Conan saved his life, and Subatai returned the favor on the Tree of Woe. He owes Conan nothing, and could have left when things looked their worst.....but there he is. Awesome.

Someone else mentioned how it was great that he wasn't just a sidekick or there for comic relief. He was with Conan through thick and thin and was a mighty warrior in his own right. I'm glad that he survived, and most movies would have killed off such a character (but valor pleases Crom).

As you can see.....crom and the four winds champions stand against many.

Probably obvious, but this scene parallels the slaughter of Conan's village at the beginning of the movie. Same music, same riders (except for those already killed), but now instead of being a little kid, Conan gets to beat some serious ass. So fucking awesome.

Up until now in Conan's adulthood, the Cult of Set have been pretty effete and weird. Having orgies and holding rituals. But here they are, dressed in black, just as he remembers them. That said, they've gotten older, got a bit soft, lost their edge. And death aside, Conan's never been sharper.

Some people say that Arnold cannnot act. I respectfully disagree. Acting is filling a role and making your audience believe that YOU are that which you pretend to be. Arnold did just that as Conan. Arnold suits the profile of a Cimmerian Barbarian, his bulging muscles fit Conan's backstory, along with his Austrian accent that gives the impression that he is from a land far away and long forgotten. I believe that Robert E. Howard would be Proud of Arnold's version of Conan.

Crom values honor and tenacity in battle. Not much pleases him more than seeing a warrior fighting against overwhelming odds while still slaying his enemies. To take up arms and defeat one's foe, even if they are too frail to do so. Crom doesn't want you to rely on his blessing to survive a battle. He wants you to live and die by the strength of your will, which should be stronger than steel. "Live, love, burn with life, slay and survive."

@@EN-mh4og My understanding is Crom is an absolute bastard. He's a horrible, spiteful God. People don't worship him, or pray to him. They just silently hope they don't attract his attention. His name is used as a curse, and even then a double edged sword. For Conan to stand on the brink of a suicidal defeat and say "Yo, Satan, a glimmer of help. And if not, FUCK YOU," is so ballsy, insane, and probably never done before, that I think this is why Crom sends Valaria. He noticed.

Possibly the most honest prayer ever spoken, "Grant me revenge! And if you do not listen, then the hell with you!"

One of the mot underrated movies ever.

I always loved this scene because Conan had Subatai, a friend that was willing to die beside him. Conan was not alone. I felt so bad for him for everything that he had to endure in his youth. Having a good friend had to made his life a lot more bearable.

Subatai was great in that he isn't a sidekick, or there for cheap comic relief. He's a companion that can, and will stand side by side with you when real trouble comes. A friend that will laugh at you as he beats you in a philosophy debate about whose god is greater. Then come find you when you're being crucified out in the middle of nowhere.

The way he says "Grant me revenge!" sends chills up my spine. Arnold, despite his flaws, has inspired generations of men to strive to be better. He was a shining beacon and I dread the day he leaves this earth. He is the epitome of the heroes the ancient Romans worshipped like Hercules, only a modern version of it. A man who broke through numerous barriers to reach higher than anyone thought possible. His speeches and example serve to help me push myself to be better.

Yeah, that rustic Austrian accent adds to the authenticity. Arnie was born to play Conan and John Milius gave him some of the best, most badass lines to speak in cinema. Arnie made a few cinematic turds, but If he goes tomorrow he'll leave Conan, The Predator, two/three great Terminator films and Total Recall as his legacy. Not bad at all.

There are only 3 actor who I cared enough about to be sad by their passing. James Avery, Steve Irwin (not technically an actor) and the last will be Arnold. When Arnold dies he will take with me the last part of my childhood, the man was the action hero everyone wanted to be when they were young.

Such an amazing film. Not only is the action great and, within the context, realistic, but it is also philosophical. It is perfectly cast. Every line from Thusla Doom is captivating. The entire soundtrack is top notch. For a limited budget, the cinematography is fantastic. There is an eerie sense of wonder when Conan stumbles into the Atlantean Tomb. There is genuine tenderness between Conan and Valeria, yet it isn't sappy or drag down the film. The camaraderie between Conan, Subotai and Akiro feels genuine. I love this movie.

I truly agree with your statement. This is my favourite movie, because it is a romantic film, with the true meaning of the word. Milius is the key here, not Arnold. His knowledge, his passion for cinema, his writing and philosophy are apparent throughout the film. Sure, he changed the source material, but what true artist doesn't put his own fingerprints on a creation?

Truth. They don't make movies like this any longer. Nowadays movies are made by comittees, comptrollers, social justice warriors and with an eye to the PG rating, the proper amount of racial diversity and the "Chinese market". And the inevitable result is forgettable shit. So sad.

Crom wanted to watch people die in battle, Conan sent him the spoils, Crom sent him reward, second movie Conan bows at mound and prays to Crom. Conan is victorious in battle again, this time Conan sent a god of battle a dead dream god monster. Crom is pleased with his best warrior.

True, that's a great comment. Crom doesn't like weak mortals, he hates weakness, so when Conan asks this wish but then instead of begging tells Crom to go fuck himself. Crom saw how strong the barbarian was and granted his wish. Great character, great film and great cast. Arnold is Conan and he is going to be Conan forever.

REH's Crom was based largely on Odin. Normally praying to Odin was to invite misfortune on yourself - he gave you your breath, your strength, your will to fight that was all you needed. And he wanted you to endure hardship to make you stronger - or kill you if you were weak and unworthy. So, praying to him casually meant you were subconsciously desiring more challenge in life! Though Vikings occasionally had a cripple they didn't kill and would send him out in the direst of winters to pray to Odin on their behalf - since he hadn't gotten his full portion he could beseech Odin lest they kill him to not have another mouth to feed. Such a prayer the Mythic Odin/Wotan likely would have honored the warriors request. Valor indeed does pleas him! But - 50/50 he'd have had the Valkyrie fetch him right after to take him to Valhalla, why risk having him wait and possibly die of old age and not join him?

I don’t like the interpretation that Crom sends Valeria to help Conan. She explicitly says the gods can’t sever her from Conan, so having her as the tool of an otherwise disinterested god undermines both her and Conan.

I like how he points out that the Gods don't perceive us from our good or bad behavior; they won't even remember us when we come and go into the world.. They're looking at a much bigger picture of reality, so it's heroic deeds, or extraordinary action or event that bring us to their perception and interest. that's when they care to intervene or not to. that's what I get from it.

Agreed. At least, that's what Conan believes about his god. And, whether that god doesn't exist or whether he hadn't noticed Conan before... it doesn't matter; you still have to admire Conan's stones for basically telling him to f off if he won't listen.

When i'm depressed i like to see this scene over andover again, it always gives me power to grown up once more, and fight another day, just like the Human Will.

The image of Subotai watching into the distance as the riders appear is breathtaking. As he moves laterally the camera shifts along with him, keeping the viewer locked into his view. Genius camera work. The music builds, the impending truth of what's coming is amazing. The cinematography showing the riders to the backdrop of Conan speaking to Crom, again brilliant and Epic. They dont make em like this anymore.

@@joeyisho5370 Yeah! I've played this soundtrack to people who've never seen Conan and they've been blown away by the power. Watching the film with the sound turned up gives you so much testosterone you could've grown a beard by the end! There's a 2-disc special edition re-recording of the soundtrack on Promethius records with extra tracks now. By Crom, it's good!

Seriously, that prayer is absolutely LEGENDARY.

"I'll meet you halfway, Conan. I'll give you these bastards, all right; I'll even send some extra, just to show what a nice guy I am. But it's up to you to actually *kill* them."

I've always loved the relationship Conan had with his God in this film. He both admires his God and doesn't give a shit if his God doesn't look out for him. He doesn't just follow his God blindly. He demonstrates earlier on that he admires the strength and status of Crom, But Conan doesn't expect Crom to favor him because he is a follower or admirer. He expects Crom to favor him because he's demonstrating his strength, resilience and just general bad-ass style. If he digs what Conan is doing, Awesome! If not, 'screw you, I'll do it myself!' He treats his God so personally that he doesn't fear offending him because, well, Crom knows Conan admires him anyway and they have such a relationship. If you were to have a God you follow and you can be so brutally honest with him like this. That's a frigging awesome relationship they have. If you fear you'll offend him/her and expect favors after years of following a God, that's a weakness. Crom doesn't like weakness and Conan pushes beyond all of that himself. He couldn't have any other God to look up to.

that's literally Conan in a nutshell; he always looks out for himself, and doesn't have anyone or anything answer his calls or do his bidding for him. He is his own man and always will be. I will always watch this film in wonder, how they made something so deep with such meaning and conviction. Sepcially with the scene in the tomb.

Pagan gods often chose champions because they aligned with their nature or embodied their gifts, not because they groveled at their feet. Example, Trojan war: The goddess of love chose Paris because he was a pretty boy. The god of the sun and practically all good things chose Hector because of his noble nature. The goddess of war chose Odysseus as her favorite because he was resourceful, brave, and ruthless. He tricked his enemies, opened the gates of Troy and burned the city to the ground.

Best build up to a battle ever. Tension, fear, adrenaline, and a prayer to the God of Battle. The music swell is my favorite part. Honestly, not even Lord of the Rings can match this.

Hay Stack You will notice that both these movies place a very strong emphasis on swords, and the mystical... and on personal development. They are growing-up stories. They don't make them like this any more. They don't leave you with the secret teenage-boy feeling of fascination and excitement and awe. Or teenage-girl -- all the girls in high school when this came out were fighting each other with garden stakes and twirling around and laughing and bragging about how they'd screw Arnie after they graduated -- What a pity.

For me, it's the subtle adjust of the weapon on the boulder at 0:54 that gets me. It's exactly the kind of human thing we'd all do at work a big meeting or call or presentation or whatever your thing is. It's a single,, final point of vulnerability before the storm. Damn, I wish they still made movies like this.

Yeah, I love that too. It's subtleties like this that make you really appreciate a movie, especially on multiple viewings. Even the look he gives Subotai as he's moving in the background at 0:35 is great.

I like how the villains do not have to make a 360 backflip every time they die. No 3d camera swoop, no super slowmo. It's crude, simple and effective and matches the theme of the movie perfectly.

The film was a bit disappointing but, the poem recited by the Vikings in the rain before battle was thrilling: "Lo, there do I see my father. Lo, there do I see my sisters and brothers. Lo, there do I see the line of my people to the beginning." The Vikings (like Conan, probably) thought it better to fight and fall in battle than to live without honour or hope. So, they prepared to meet their ancestors.

This film was so perfect, you had a lot of beautiful and atmospheric shots of the world that he lived in, great soundtrack... But what made it unforgettable were the fight scenes. For the movies total playtime, there wasn't many events of violence, but hell, when shit went down, It was fast, bloody, and fucking awesome.

Real men dont say " hey guys lets just stop fighting and spend a few weeks getting our moves perfect and obviously completely fake, then we will come back and make a pretty fight". These are men, not little girls masquerading as men to look pretty on the screen

+Fobbsy Maybe you've missed films like John Wick, which used real Krav Maga and CQC techniques the whole way through- the point is, better modern choreography has brought in martial arts consultants to make the combat "fast, bloody, and fucking awesome" and far more plausible. Conan was comprised of actors "masquerading as men"- Arnold didn't know how to hold or use a sword properly, and neither did any of the other actors, so a lot of it looks completely ridiculous to somebody who has studied european martial arts- or hell, even has a casual familiarity with it. Today, they'd bring in an expert to tell them how to hold a sword and shield properly, what tactics were used in fights, etc. But, the cheesiness of Conan has a charm of its own.

jadedandbitter Well john wick was a breath of fresh air when it came out, but even then, i wasnt taking it seriously. I know krav maga has a more practical application than the other martial arts, but even then, almost all martial arts techniques are usually miles apart from when people actually fight. A technique might look amazing and fluid and poetic, but when the actual fighting happens, it just turns into a slapfest. I can see the appeal of good choreography, but too often it just comes off as fake. You can see the actor counting his moves in his head

It is my understanding that the film was intended to look "Frazzetta" like.

Arnold has done some great movies, and many people consider Terminator to be his best role, but to me Conan will always be his best performance.

The score is what makes this excellent action scene legendary. I won’t say we don’t get composers like this anymore,because we really do, is just that composers like this inspire those that come later. The greatest thing that can be done is for one to inspire the greatness in another.

The "to hell with you" part is what granted him his wish. Crom has no time for ceremonious weaklings.

I don't believe in any gods, personally, but I think orthopraxy is far too often overlooked in favor of orthodoxy, which is a shame. You would think that orthopraxy would follow orthodoxy, but strangely enough, that's often not the case.

0:50 Music and horses... OMG! Pure awesome! They have nowhere to run and they do one of the best last stands in movie history. Obviously the prayer fits the character perfectly.

Damn you Hollywood. Damn you to Hell. This masterpiece of filmmaking and you didn't allow Milius to do his trilogy yet gave Spielberg Indiana Jones and Lucas his Star Wars. Damn you Hollywood.

TO HELL WITH YOU!!!!

This scene is everything... Conan puts everything on the line for this battle. It is personal as much as it is transformative. He's survived as a slave, as a gladiator, as a soldier, through rigorous training, in open wilderness, as someone who came face to face with death, as a raider, and now he is finally put into the role of war strategist. Two against many. This scene right here is the prologue to his legend.

The Basil Polodouris score here is major badass! Intense and fitting.

*After Conan's prayer* Crom be like "I like this guy! Nobody's ever said to hell with me if I didn't listen. I grant your request my good man."

The most metal fantasy movie made. Savagely beautiful, brutally violent, and possibly the greatest soundtrack to any movie.

That is a prayer my a MAN! Crude, direct and to the point.

the sword of rexor was his father's sword and the moment he broke it and kill rexor he honored the memory of his father by swing it over his head, also metaphore to how conan supress his father sword and achive his vengence and finish tulsa doom by his father sword and thrown the sword away after his gaoal achive. GREAT SCENE

Beyond the humor and epicness of his line, Conan also knows he doesn't risk anything: Crom doesn't listen anyway so he wouldn't know for the disrespect. And if by a fluke Crom's happened to listen; he would laugh at this and be pleased by Conan knowing him so well (and he's not even asking for things being done by a greater power. Just having revenge by being able to get in the fight). That's the way to go

The Exiles game has the ability for you to start with Crom ad a diety, and it legit says that Crom cares little for prayers. His offerings is the blood of the battlefield and praises of warriors forging their legends though steel and will. He needs no alter for all men sing his praises in their hearts. Why should Crom care when he's the God of battle? The other gods in their petty rivalries feed him anyway.

People say Arnold couldnt act, I watched this for the first time more than 20 years ago. And it has stayed with me. This scene along with others. His prayer to Crom in his voice over the years has stayed in my memory. That is greatness for me.

Much as I'd love to see Schwarzenegger in another Conan film (preferably better than Destroyer!), Arnie is 76! He may be in great shape but they'd still have to de-age him with CGI for Conan the King. Should've done it at least a decade ago.

I remember watching this when I was like 8. When I went to Iraq, right before a convoy mission I had memorized this part before we took off. Corm smiled upon us that day.

This movie is over 40 years old but still looks amazing - a timeless classic indeed, not like this forgettable crap from today. "Grant me one request : Grant me revenge! And if you do not listen, then the hell with you!" What a gorgeous line! Arnold was, is and will forever be THE real Conan!

Crom helps those who help themselves.

This scene is so epic. The dedication from the actors putting their bodies on the line for this fight.

Awesome prayer, pious in its brutal almost sacrilege nature, a true belief in Crom, but without blinders of fantasism, a totally honest prayer to a war god. Of course Crom granted it!

The dialogue in this film is absolute poetry!

One of the best musical scores/editing ever done in a film. Everything clicked which was never intended to be a classic with this very uneven cast (ran the gamut of enthusiastic semi-pro to highly professional) and skimpy script (still with high points such as Conan's prayer and of course Von Sydow and Jones' lines and Mako's narration) but came a lot closer than anyone had a right to expect.

The weird thing is Thulsa Doom is King Kull's enemy, not Conan's. Conan's enemy was Thoth-Amon. I used the collect the B&W Savage Sword of Conan magazines in my early youth.

This is the most metal scene ever filmed... Period!!

This is one of the best adventure movies ever, period. Crom laughs at today's movies! Laughs from his mountain.

This movie, and the soundtrack, give me barbarian goosebumps every time

I stole this comment from another Arnie video: "Crom is a gloomy, angry god. He does, however, respect mortals that demonstrate power, bravery, and courage despite being worshiped by Cimmerians. He likely would have ignored Conan's prayer until Conan told him to fuck off if he couldn't back him up. Something that takes some balls to tell a god known for invoking terrible curses to those that anger him. Crom had respect for all the trials and tribulations of Conan's life. The man had been through some serious shit including being crucified, tortured on the wheel of pain for years, and a slave fighter. Conan and his buddy were the only two combatants against 20 other guys. Doesn't matter if they had to fight dirty. Crom respects strength in the face of certain death. Rexon basically came with a small battalion after two guys which is some pussy shit to Crom" I found that theory interesting. It might explain the God that worshippers pray to today.

In the original book series, Crom actually does interfere just once, saving Conan's life. By that point, Conan was an old man (but still a beast), the King of Aquilonia by his own hand. Conan had travelled halfway around the world to save his kidnapped queen from a far eastern wizard-king. During the final confrontation, the wizard had succeeded in magically paralyzing Conan and was about to kill him. Then Crom manifested, telling the wizard that no way was a warrior like Conan, with all the mighty feats Conan had done throughout his life - the epitome of what Crom stands for, going to meet an ignoble end by some sniveling wizard's dagger. Crom dispelled the paralysis, the wizard started sh*tting in his pants that a god had actually personally rebuked him, and then Conan killed the wizard. (At least that's how I remember it. Haven't read that book for years.) Crom definitely respects Conan.

Well, books and film are a bit different, but in this scene the movie nails the gist of it: Crom values valor and bravery after everything else. Slaying a trapped foe isn't an act of courage, so Crom is displeased. Running over a brave warrior with an army of thousand isn't an act of courage, so Crom is displeased. Conan doesn't ask Crom to slay his foes: that would anger Crom, asking a god to slay your enemies is a supreme act of cowardice. Conan asks Crom to grant him revenge by his own hand, and curses Crom for being stuck into an uneven battleground that would grant advantage on a cowardly enemy. Crom appreciates Conan's courage and bravery, and grants him strengh so he can fight an entire army with his own bravery

Conan the manliest movie ever made

It’s a shame Subotai didn’t return in the second movie. He was also honourable and brave, a true friend to the end.

IKR. He and Conan were like brothers. They had each other's backs.

Subotai using a spear here is extremely smart, considering they were facing enemies on horseback. It shows the difference between him and Conan. Conan uses big, powerful weapons that he can swing with ferocity. Subotai is a thief by trade, so he values efficiency and anything that might give him an edge. Damn awesome movie.

his acting as a man questioning his entire faith is actually quite superb here

The sheer will to live, in the face of surmounting odds, that’s what’s important.

Music is so epic here. At the beginning, when it builds up tension slowly according to enemy appearance 0:15 - 0:49, just to errupt into the mighty pattern of 0:50 leading you without a doubt that great battle is coming and it was only silence before the storm. But when 1:25 kicks in with prayer part, music is once again calm but yet powerful - portraying the fact, that fight its not about fight itself, but for what we stand in it. Master-fucking-piece of art, all hail Conan.

Crom to Set: Dude, your guy started it.......

Best prayer ever. So honest and sincere.

Everything about this is awesome. The music, the preparation for the fight, the tension when the riders arrive, Conan's speech and the fight itself which is a hard and a tough brawl between two warriors against several dozen foes with gritty and simple combat along with utilization of traps and strategy which feels real and believable. Overall this fight kicks ass!

This is a classic movie and the music score is IMO one if the great masterpieces of film score

This is one of the most epic moments and speeches in movie history. His prayer is driven by anger, revenge and truth: You either take it all or you will lose forever!

Crom! I've never prayed to you before; I have no tongue for it. No one, not even you will remember if we where good men, or bad; why we fought and why we died. No, all that matters is that two stood against many - That's what's important! Valor pleases you Crom, so grant me one request; grant me REVENGE! And if you do not listen... THEN TO HELL WITH YOU!

The pride Conan show in this scene is epic...thats how The relation with any god should be...

As a young boy, I adored this movie. Hell, I still do.
