Conan's remotes were absolute proof that he was a far funnier comedian than the actual show allowed for. His comedy stretches far beyond the reaches of the static talk show format that he had to moderate himself to function in. It actually proved that he was one of the best comedians of our time, with an extraordinarily quick and sophisticated wit. For me, even though I did enjoy his show - I feel robbed that he was pigeon-holed into that alone - he could've made some amazing shows with him as a star if he were allowed to.

That Charlie Rose interview is on youtube, and Conan's memory of it makes it sound a lot worse than it was. Maybe in his memory the interview and the Shales article combine into one, and he pictures Rose reading out the entire article on camera or something. But actually Rose only briefly mentioned Shales, the only somewhat quote being "it's not working for him (Shales) as a critic", and asking if Conan just says to those critics "I'm doing the show I want to do". Overall I think Conan and his show came across very positively in that interview and Rose also seemed to be in his corner against critics. But I can totally understand Conan's memory of it being faulty and getting some PTSD reaction just out of Rose mentioning Shales, or even thinking at the time the interview went a lot worse than it actually did.
