American here, I always assumed Candy was just an abbreviated form of Canada or Canadian! I was vaguely aware that the award was called a Candy, it never occurred to me that it would be "named" after John Candy, as well it should be! A national treasure. Canada never ceases to amaze 🇺🇸 ❤️ 🇨🇦

I worked with Johns friend Rick Bennett who had been petitioning the Canadian Screen Awards to have the award nicknamed The Candy but they refused because they wanted to establish the award on its own merit. Norm was able to publicly override it during the live broadcast and make the name stick

When I was growing up I loved John Candy. He made a movie in the 80s called “Summer Rental” and my uncle and cousins bumped into Mr Candy while they were on vacation. I don’t remember their impression of him but I’ll never forget the photographs they shared, smiling and eating lunch with him on the beach. He really seemed to have the biggest heart, and I’ve always been grateful to hear that he really was as warm and generous as he seemed.

@@calisongbird , as a young neurodivergent child (definitely ADHD, maybe autism), I craved attention from other people but didn't always know the best way to get it. I went through a phase of casually taking objects from people while talking to them. If they were holding something (e.g., paper, phone, water bottle), I would slowly take it from them and hold it, ideally without breaking the conversation. That didn't really work. Esoteric animal trivia was also not well received. I'm not saying that Tom Hanks' rapper son is neurodivergent or disabled like me, but it does seem like the privileges he has enjoyed from his dad (e.g., fame, wealth, world travel) have sheltered him to the point that he is out of touch with reality. He desperately wants attention but has no idea what is entertaining to the average person. The fake Jamaican accent and bad rapping are his version of taking a water bottle out of someone's hand or sharing too many weird animal facts.

The parties were called The Services. I think that was the name. Often, when driving to downtown Toronto for work, I would see JC at his house on Avenue Road (look it up, yes it is the name of the street) on the front veranda with his feet up on the railing and smoking a cigar. I can't forget a couple SCTV sketches that featured John Candy. One was "Roy's Food Repair" ("I'll drop it in liquid nitrogen, take it out back and sand-blast it") and "Pepi Longsocks". ("Look at me! I'm a potato!").

Thanks to Ryan Reynolds, I now think of John Candy every Halloween, which was his birthday. 2020 would have been his 70th and Ryan made a lovely compilation of John Candy’s funniest movie moments to the tune of “Every Time You Go Away” by Paul Young. You can find it on Ryan’s KZread channel with the title “Happy Candy Day”. I just rewatched it yesterday.

Great interview Conan. John Candy was one of a kind, very talented funny guy. I think he was the best comedic actor that came out of his generation other than Robin Williams. Colin Hanks was great in that excellent series The Offer. Godfather producer Al Ruddy's story was really interesting. This is great to see Colin is producing a John Candy doc.

Among the mindless Twitter questions you see, one recent one (yesterday?) was "what celebrity's death hit you the hardest". For me it was/is John Candy. Phil Hartman did too, and Robin Williams shocked hard ... but such a young man - loaded with as yet unrealized potential and yet overflowing with an entertainment resume rivaled by few ... I do hope the documentary is made. This was wonderful to listen to - thank you for publishing (even with the Hanx/Spanx interlude).

@@calisongbird not to mention he just lost a LOT of money when his Canadian football team went under while filming. There were other factors leaning towards a stress induced heart attack, not simple obesity. Goodman once weighed over 400 in early 2000s, and he’s doing fine at 70yo after multiple 100+ weight losses and a lifetime of drinking. His father dropped at 52, but his brother is still going at 84.

I was an employee at Richards on Richards, a popular famous Vancouver hot spot back in the late 1980s. I remember seeing John Candy with Wayne Gretzky side by side and I as many in the club were transfixed. This I believe was sometime before their purchase of the Toronto Argonauts. I had seen hundreds of celebrities pass through club but I'll never forget seeing Candy and Gretzky together. Candy as well as Gretzky frequented the club on many separate occasions. One time Candy got up on stage and sang with a band. Just whooping it up with the crowd and being his jovial self. I can't believe he was only in his mid thirties or late thirties at that time. The passing of John Candy and untimely demise of Phil Hartman were two of the greats that were a gut punch to me. Too soon.
