    Thats what I was getting furious about. There is no consideration of the fact that the person doing the repair needs to make money! Yes a diagnostics fee should cost $50 because you had to have someone come out and fix a problem you would never have fixed yourself.

    Agreed. Not the full truth here. For a RAM replacement...same part price ranges considerably and it depends on when you bought the part so if they (company) bought the part 2 years ago and is sitting in their inventory...that part could very well have cost $120 versus the $25 they claim now and probably is however...the company will charge what THEY paid for not what it is worth now and let's not forget they have to mark it up because that is how business works ..u dnt sell a part for the same price you paid for.... unless u dont want ur business to succeed. Another fact about ram...u should always have matching ram modules for ideal optimization so if a 1gb ram module failed and the other 1gb ram is working..after a certain amount of time manufacturers stop making 1gb and you may only be able to find a 2gb or 4gb...if that is the case u will and should replace BOTH modules so they match and then charge your hourly rate plus one-way travel. Ram replacement shouldnt take longer than 30 minutes or less..all this said and done i would articulate all of this to the client

    I worked in a computer shop 20 years ago. I made a very good job selling all used parts for people with not a lot of money. Everybody was happy : the manager lowering his stock, the consumer being repaired for a bargain. I know a story of a technician in another shop : after crawling the xxx photos on one of his customers, he found photos of his wife witht the customer. Finished in a divorce and he also got fired because he broke the front teeth of the customer.

    We have a local computer store which loved telling customers their hard drive was faulty, They'd charge $300 for a new drive which was worth $150 and then sell the used drive to someone else. The problem was they "forgot" to format the old drives and one farmer noticed he had emails on his "New" drive belonging to a friend. The same business told a customer her computer was dead and tried to sell her a new system, including the monitor. She brought the computer to me and after re-seating the power supply cable it worked perfectly. A $1,000 computer, if she traded it in on a new one was quoted as worth just $100. The same business scammed me when I purchased the first CDROM in town. I found out after paying $999 for the new drive that it was supposed to come with 3 free games. I went back to the store and there were my 3 games in their shelves costing $99 each. They refused to give them to me so they ended up getting an extra $297 for my disks. They are still in business and no doubt still scamming innocent customers.

    Umm, how do they expect the technician to make money when they cannot put a markup on their parts? That is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. You cannot run a service business without a markup on parts. Hourly rates alone would be so high that nobody would pay them. "He charged $35 for RAM that only costs half that on Newegg!" No shit, Sherlock. Hello? They had to order that ram with their money at a price about the same, pay the inventory guy to keep track of it, keep it in stock so that YOU don't have to order it on Newegg, AND dispatch the correct RAM with the technician. Hmm... but I think they should not charge a markup, says a bunch of overpaid government employees.

  • @TortureBot

    @TortureBot

    I agree with you. I mean do they really expect the cost of the ram to be the same as what the computer techs could find it for online? They were probably surfing a site like Newegg or something and pulled up one of the best prices on a particular stick of ram with the same capacity as the guy wanted to sell for $35. I know this video is a few years old and I think one of the desktops being worked on still had ribbon cables in it so that is probably before SATA drives, unless my tiny phone screen was too small and I didn't see that correctly. They are going to charge a little more than what you can buy the RAM for online, probably retail or a little higher and they have to put money in their pockets for their time driving to the location and at least a partial hour's diagnostic pay. I thought the guy gave a reasonable deal that charged $35 for the ram. Now the guy who wanted to send the unit to a clean room needs his head examined, and he probably was trying to line his pockets for the entire month from that one customer.

But sometimes when you killed the browser to get rid of it, the browser would just reload the scam page because it was just doing what it was supposed to when terminated unceremoniously. You could put these links into blocked items but one little change in the actual URL and it was back again. These use java script to fuck your browser over but otherwise are not a real threat.

    This video makes me sick. I spent COUNTLESS coffee fueled, sleep deprived days when I was studying for my A+ exam, making sure I learned how to properly diagnose and repair systems. I take tremendous pride in providing honest, accurate and friendly service to my customers! When I see "techs" represent our industry in this manner, I get very angry because it hurts the credibility of us all. I dedicated countless hours and significant financial resources to get myself into the tech industry, as have many others. It is an insult to all of us who take our roles, jobs and responsibilities seriously when someone takes a shit on our business as these individuals have. Please, if you are in the computer repair business, no matter if your an employee for a corporation like best buy, or if you're a business owner, remember that the work you do will impact the credibility of everyone else in the business and therefore our livelihood! Be honest and upfront with customers as it will only result in more business, and if the problem is simple and fixed right away at no cost to your business (aside from the 5-10 minutes to solve it), then don't charge them. You will be repaid with their satisfaction and referral to other potential customers (and probably/usually a tip for your kindness and honesty)! True story on that last note: I had a very kind elderly gentleman bring in a pc with a loose sata connection back in February. I quickly solved the problem free of charge, and he has brought me coffee just about every morning ever since! That's something that I personally find far more rewarding than a quick buck for 5 minutes of my time!

    @@ivisyung3088 You are half right. If you have two dimms and one is dead, you would see only half the memory in BIOS, sometimes. Other times it will simply not POST. In which case you need to narrow it down. The first step is to disconnect components and peripherals not needed to POST and then checking and reseating connections. The next step is memory. With multiple dimms that means removing one and seeing if it will POST, then swapping and then changing slots and trying again. If it's a single dimm, you simply reseat it, then you will need to replace it with a known good dimm and try to POST. Failing this, it comes down to CPU, Motherboard and PSU. This all gets a bit harder to do in the field and is better diagnosed on the bench but not impossible.

    While you are right, they likely would not have noticed the ram was missing parts, it is no excuse not to test the ram directly. It's a pretty obvious problem spot and so easy to test. Anyone who is qualified to repair computers ( ie A+ etc), would have figured out the problem easily. Anyone who was a computer enthusiast, even without A+ and such also would have figured out the problem. Heck, anyone with common sense and a basic understanding of basic troubleshooting would have figured out this problem. Computers are not actually that hard to work with.

    Unlikely on two counts. One this is not an American broadcast. It's Canadian. The likelihood of this being shown in the US outside of KZread is very nebulous. The second reason is, unfortunately, many computer repair types, especially the big box store based ones are built around fleecing consumers who do not know better. My takeaway from this is the exact opposite of what you think it is Nebula7. It makes me want more to do all of my own work so as not to be ripped off.

  • @Barry7777777
    @Barry77777776 жыл бұрын

    Some parts of this video are unfair to honest businesses; the main thing I noticed is that a standard bench fee to fix a quick problem is considered unfair to consumers by some. Sorry folks, but knowledge costs money for us to have in the first place (paying for the proper knowledge is part of what makes a technician reputable), and it takes money to keep the lights on. A minimum bench fee of $50 is quite fair for at least two reasons: 1) You go home with a working computer, and 2) The shop charging you $50 is the HONEST shop that prevented you from getting ripped off by someone else. Not charging a fee for your time and knowledge is the mark of an amateur who has little confidence in his abilities, and even less experience in the real world of business. Professional, independent technician of 45 years speaking. There's only one way to do it right, and that is to do it right - and charge a fee that is fair to both parties and reflects inflation and market trends.

    I tried that pay model for a couple years. I just ended up explaining the bill. So with ram swap out just charged half on service call and full price if the machine wss buried. Pricing in my opinion should never exceed a 40% mark up on hardware. Ram is hard to second guess pricing. Several times I have seen 100% spike in cost. It has over the past 5 years gotten better. I had few quotes I had to rework due to the massive hard drive spike from a few years ago when the Asian plsnt was flooded.

    Carter Baker my self I no longer do repairs under a business and I no longer charge tax or sign contracts I just charge them for the part and tell them how long it took and tell them you can pay me what you think I feel is fair that way they are happy o make money and I have no overhead. in fact I just recently repaired a laptop for a lady that took no time I just reinstalled windows it was loaded with crap and she wanted a fresh install anywise told her how to do it she preferred to pay me $20 to do it so I did. and a week later I hade a friend of her ask me to look at a pc she got from someone it was a windows 7 system free 10 upgrade loaded with ram all that was rong she did not no the password she was given it I told her it would take a little time she asked if I would fix it at her house I sed sure that's fine could not crack the password so I sed I have to go get some software to crack the password I spent like 15 min trying to crack it she told me well it took you 20 min and I did not expect you to have to was that much time on something so old I do not need it any was I have several computers that work instead of me paying you would you like to have it I sed sure and have not ben using it for a week it works great and even better a few days latter she upgraded her computer to a new hard drive and gave me the old one.only question I hade was if she new how to replace a hard drive how come she did not just reinstall windows and wipe the password.

    I think it would be cost effective for those service people to first assess the situation like weather it is a hardware problem or a software problem before dispatching the right personal to the job. I would first ask at least - weather the computer turns on at all. And then, most important of all - no outside technician should open a part that is covered by a warranty at the time. Seems none of them ask that question before going ahead to work on it.

    I'm in a disagreement when it comes to call out/diagnostics fees . When something genuinely only takes 5 seconds to diagnose, yes, it's not worth charging, but if you're on a call out to somewhere that takes 5 seconds. Then you should charge. Especially if you're self employed. Otherwise yo umake no business. Or if you don't charge then leave a few business cards.

    The issue is that you can do a system reload using the recovery media and replace the missing/corrupt file without needing to factory reset the entire machine and lose all that data. So the company was saying that she must back up the data, which is a charge, and that she must reinstall the entire OS, which is a charge for the disc, and the hours separately. When all she needs is just the disc to replace missing files

    Defamation campaign lol. If they knew how to do their work or at least do it honestly there would have been no "defamation." That corrupt memory module is diagnosable through listening to the goddamn BIOS beep code. You don't even need diagnostic software for that. Corrupt data on a hard drive does not automatically mean a virus. That is straight out Bullshit. BAcking up data before a reinstall should be a fee but since you are not staring at the comupter for the time it takes to transfer, I doubt it's worth the 60.00 or more an hour to do it. After all there are other machines that can be servoced during that downtime. The overwhelming preponderance of computer techs are either crooks or incompetent. I count myself very lucky when I run across the rare honest one.

Chances are, if you run the SFC tool in an elevated cmd prompt then Windows will restore any missing or corrupt system files without having to re-image and then backup and restore local files. - Level 3 support at HP Enterprise.

    As someone that is learning the repair side of PC's and the business, this is concerning. These people are to be held to a standard and certain level of trust. Even if these are higher volume companies, it makes the independent techs look incompetent. All in all, if you're doing the job right and in an honest fashion, you won't have anything to worry about. When you lose respect for the technology and of being truthful and equitable for the sake of a profit or revenue boost, it's time to find a new career.

  • @welshparamedic

    Well here is a personal story, I do not run a business in fact I am a retired EMS paramedic who had to retire after a spinal injury, I used to build my own PC's for myself and my kids, family members and friends etc. You soon get known and people ask "could you look at this?" etc. Here in the UK we had a company called PC World, part of the 'Curry's/Dixon' group. I had a neighbour whose Son's PC would run (gaming mainly) and after a few minutes would shut down. She took it to PC world, who told her she needed a New Motherboard; cost including Labour was £300+. Now most of 'us amateurs' would get a history, i.e. shuts down after use, What type of Use? were you browsing the net, writing an essay or something high demand like intensive gaming! and Most, would come to the conclusion I did, which was 'Overheating' the PC getting hot from the hard work it was doing and because for whatever reason it was failing to be cooled, Shuts down! This is generally a built in safety feature to save your hardware from irreparable damage. So I booted into the BIOS and checked the CPU temperature and sure enough it was getting hotter by the second until 'Click' it switched it's self off, further visual inspection showed a very slow CPU fan with the heat-sink clogged with dust! I took off the heat-sink/fan assembly only to be confronted with very poorly applied thermal compound too! I used to keep a small supply of parts, new and second hand stuff from my old builds etc and said to my neighbour that as the part was so cheap ( AKASA socket AMD 2/3 heat-sink/fan costing, if, memory serves me correctly, no more than £6.50. I could have put in a used one, her's was not any good as the fan motor barely turned the blades and being that buying a suitable fan alone to sit on the existing heat-sink was almost as much as a new unit, plus the new packaged unit had thermal paste ready applied. Anyway, I put in the new heat-sink/fan (literally 5 minutes work) and didn't want anything for doing the job just the price of the parts (well it was a neighbour!) and saved her £300 She admitted to me that if they (PC World) had said £100, even up to about £150 (ish) she would have paid it but by being GREEDY they lost out, to be really honest, even if they had charged the 'retail' price for the parts, say £10 and Labour charge for, say 10 minutes (and that's being generous) all this job involved was taking a side cover off (2 x screws) un-clipping heat-sink/fan , cleaning old thermal compound off CPU face and fit the unit (with pre-applied thermal paste).... then, surely £15 TOPS for 10 (really 5) minutes work would be a total cost of £20 to £25! The Tech repair business is getting, sorry, it's already got the reputation of the second hand cars (automobile) one and garage repairs in general too, i.e. Ripp Offs! (And very hard to find a reputable honest trustworthy one to boot!) Karma always wins in the end!

    That guy she talked to at the end is just as much of a criminal as as the guys he sends around. Told her what she wanted to hear, paid her off and went on conducting business as usual. Most commercial tech repair businesses have diagnostic equipment that can test memory, hard drives, power supplies and any other piece of tech in a system separate or even in system. Why don't the people doing this kind of work have something similar? That they have to lug around with them other than just making guesses. Think of the machines your car gets hooked up to for diagnostic purposes. With modern PC's often the BSOD itself tells you what failed. In cryptic numbers, or beep patterns but still.

    The hard drive diagnosis was very bad. It would still POST (Power On Self Test) with a bad drive. It would likely complain about SMART, unable to find the drive, or the OS would fail to load with a registry hove corrupt or missing etc. This is NOT even close to the symptom of bad RAM. In fairness you need to listen for beeps, which are often RAM though there are different POST codes. When it won’t post if you have nothing to go on you tear it down to just a motherboard, one stick of memory, the CPU and cooler, monitor, and keyboard. That said, you need known good parts to guess and check at times. Most common problems for no POST are bad motherboard, then bad power supply, and finally bad RAM. Surprisingly, CPUs never really die u less customer damaged. I literally used to be a tech for 10 years and made thousands of repairs and only one (1) CPU, which had bent pins from a Dell tech prior.

    Here's a simple solution to data retrieval: Get yourself a hard drive reader. Relatively inexpensive. You don't need top-of-the-line. Lots to choose from. Depending on which one you buy, they will connect to most popular-sized hard drives. It doesn't diagnose anything. It won't fix anything. It won't remove viruses. It retrieves & transmits data. Nothing more. Programs & operating systems can be replaced, but personal files, photos, & videos can't. As long as your hard drive hasn't been physically damaged internally, it can still see what's on it. And most importantly, it can grab your personal stuff & transfer it to a safe drive. I bought a cheap one a couple of years ago. Worth it's weight in gold. CPU goes haywire? Won't turn on? Dropped on the floor? Blue screen? No problem. Just connect it between your hard drive and to another working CPU... and you are golden. Never spend another dime on someone else's need to take advantage of you. I've bailed out a bunch of people I know, including myself. This was a public service announcement. I represent NO ONE.

    here's the order I use when I go to a customers house. If the computer does not come up to the bios and seems dead. 1. monitor make sure the monitor is working by hooking up a known good computer (my laptop) 2. Power supply use a jumper and see what the voltage is. 3. Video card (look for bad caps) 4. Ram. 5. motherboard look for bad caps and burnt spots. 6. remove all extra add in cards. It has to be one of those things. The cpu almost never burns up anymore. Look for clogged fans and heatsinks. If the computer can boot to the bios but doesn't come up or the hard drive is making a bunch of noise check for hard drive issues. Make sure you have known working spares with you to include power supply, video card, monitor, ram, network card, clean formatted hard drive, wireless router. If you can't find a hardware problem its most likely a windows issue or malware/virus issue. Bring a Linux Live CD and boot into Linux. I have been doing in home computer repair since 2005 and I am honest and truthful with the customer. I have many repeat customers and make a good living. It's all been word of mouth. I love being my own boss. I could make more in the corporate world but you can't put a price tag on the freedom you have as your own boss.

    These repairmen are learning engineering. Just the social kind and not the tech kind.

    A corrupt system file does not always need to re-install the OS. I have copied corrupted system files from a working system with the same OS version/sub-version to fix an XP machine. Don't know it that trick should work nowadays. If it was me, I would change for just 1 hour.

    Copying data to a new drive is a painstaking process. These report uncovers a few crooked techs however, all these prices mentioned were actually pretty damn low. Geek squad is a definite scam. Its not unusual for us to install a new ssd with windows for $170 and thats a good deal! We guarantee our work and your privacy. Most of these people just have no integrity. This business is so lucrative that it pays to be honest and build a reputation on integrity, honesty, trustworthiness and all that good stuff. I do for customers what i would want someone to do for me

    there is no such thing as a "Computer Technician" in the private sector., that title is reserved for the people that actually engineered/built the computer and they work for the manufacturer of your computer and they also do not charge $39.99/hr. Special deal!!! to fix your computer. you may find these techs working at places like NASA or the FBI or the government in general and they probably make like, $300 to $3000 an hour. want your computer fixed? learn how to fix it yourself., there are plenty of youtube videos on every aspect of repairs for your computer. if you have a couple of different sizes of philips screwdrivers and a flashlight, you can replace any component inside your desktop...laptops are a bit harder but can be done.
