Compulsive Purchases, Solving Crazy Carburetor Mysteries, And The Death Kart Calls Us Out
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Facebook Marketplace strikes again and we end up with yet another Jeep XJ we couldn't refuse, and in the meantime our post race inspection of Slaghammer's 383 reveals a sneaky little problem that's plagued us from the beginning.
Also, we change directions slightly with our vintage Gasser and Dr. Art seeks to extract revenge against the tiny little minibike that tried to kill him twice with an 1800 amp electric death kart.

The way i see it is that, sometimes you're just replacing something that you perhaps didn't value as much over something you value more or want, need more.
I like you staying with the 383. Seems they don't get any respect like the 340, 440, and hemi.

The 383 is a sweet motor. The 400 also very nice. They are a bit heavy, alloy heads help. There was also a raised deck 383 in the 50s.
Glad to hear the 383 will be sticking around for awhile longer. I knew something didn't sound right at the track. I hope the diagnosis takes care of the miss (fingers crossed).
Feels so good when you dig into something and figure out why it wasn't running right FOR SURE (like a massively drilled out jet). No ifs, ands or buts. You can't fix it and get it back together fast enough to try it out!

I had small noises that escalated into full-on airplane takeoff. I had replaced my wheel bearing assemblies, for the driver's side being worn, and a huge difference in noise was noticed but still was having a noise, so I replaced the CV axles, still having a noise. Figured it out last night. The new driver's side bearing was completely shot. I swapped the shot one with the used (OEM 140k miles on it) passengers side I had lying on the shelf. Gives me a few miles while I'm waiting on another bearing. The road silence on the test drive was blissful, now you can hear the person next to you, the radio, or even your own thoughts. lol
Tony ya gotta put a wheelie bar on the mini bike 😂 lol
Have a UT yard sale! I'll purchase (like so many subscribers) anything you throw away just to put on the mantlepiece!😆
I see some good bargains popping up occasionally too. Thankfully, I'm always broke, or I'd be that compulsive purchaser too 😆
If that Jeep was being sold here in Phoenix, even with a blown motor, they would ask $8-9000 for it. Everything is so stupidly overpriced out here and there’s really not many good finds. I can’t wait to move to Tennessee, and maybe hang out with you one day!

Sierra Auctions offloads the cheap, police-siezed, and repoed, Just don't be a dumb a**, bring a scanner when you go to look at the cars. It will have to pass emissions for it to be registered in AZ. Buy one from the runners auction, preferably with no check engine light. But like I said, bring a scanner and go get into something you can afford! I have had hit and miss luck for my family vehicles, but I've learned auto repair for cheap, and the success story goes like this. I bid $1600 on a '99 Olds Alero 2.4 with 69k on the odometer with emissions ready in 2016. Now it has 149k on it, and I've done everything to it short of rebuilding/ replacing the engine/ trans. (Not including tools) Overall less than $4000 including tires and maintenance (Supertech Full-Syn every 3k, 2021 alternator, fuel pump has been replaced twice with filters, did the timing set/water pump at 135k, cv axles and front and rear bearings and Shocks/coils, pow-steer pump and rack plus tie-rods, ball joints and control arms at 140k) and still chugging strong. Put a trailer hitch on it when I bought it, and have towed a small trailer while moving all around the country with it. lol
Totally dig the old school builds, I've generally built less than beautiful hot rods and canyon racers and relate big time. Thx for the channel, all the experience and wisdom we so desperately need these days. Good job sire

Used to taking junkyard long blocks, not even pull the heads, and just hop it up. When you say the engine is .010 over with stock pistons, do you mean it has OEM std sized pistons or .010 OEM equivalent aftermarket flat tops? I think I remember you saying an engine could be run with a piston that is .010 smaller than the bore with no issues with oil control or excess piston slap.

You can see from the vid they're in series. Also, you can really go much higher than the nameplate voltage of a motor as long as you don't exceed max rpm, it doesn't arc(this would take prob 500v, so not an issue), and as long as it doesn't overheat.
We understand. We do. We're sick right along with you.

Just going from the sound of Slaghammer @ the track last video, there is distinct difference between when you tach it up in the burn out box, and when you launch it off the line. It sounds kind of labored off the line, like it lugs down a little bit. The engine revs quick like you want in the burnout, but seems to be lugging @ launch. I think your combo has what it takes to get into the mid 7s in the 1/8th - just need o keep flogging away!!

@NBSV1

I believe it’s out of his hands. The other people involved got carried away with throwing parts at it so the spirit of the build was lost. Basically anybody can throw good aftermarket parts at one and make that power. The whole spirit was the tweaking of “junk” factory parts to end up with a good motor.
I love UNCLE TONY!!!!!

You're a true car guy Tony I've had the same dilemma's On Projects that I slap just a little mule motor that I rebuilt a few years back and took out Of my daily driver You just put it to get it moving and Had a big plans For a hot motor and then proceeded to just fall in love With the one that was in it and just did everything right the little engine that could It kind of get atatched 2 stuff that just does what it's supposed to do
You need a real torque engine for 1/8 mile racing . That's why the 428 Cj cleaned up on the eigth mile . If you could get them to hook up you would be gone . They did good in the Quarter , too .
Your AOK!!!! enjoy your passion

Glad your keeping 383.

Hey uncle Tony, definitely need to buy a couple 273/318s and 904s. Ill travel, i don't mind
Good luck moving to the new shop Tony.
14:00 whenever i drill a jet i always file the numbers off it so im forced to check it before i decide whether i want it or not. right now my webers run blank air and main jets that are equal to 200 and 115
Love the Slagger. I would just keep the 383 , it looks good , yes the stance , sounds sweet , but maybe some gearing play , but love it as is.
put the 451 in the dart that slaghammer 383 is gonna go low 7s all day if you change the intake and go with a single 750-950 cfm the heads are built for low end with a tunnel ram built for hi rpm that tunnel ram belongs on the 451 , that old school metal window screen between the intake and heads to atomize fuel better would probably help a bit too
So... 451 XJ? That's what I'm hearing!
1800 Amps x 36 Volts is 64,800 Watts, divided by 750 W ( 1 Hp ) is 86 Hp, if he can get traction and not end up in a ditch he's going to smoke the mini bike Tony.
guess we have to check our jets. Someone was on a budget that day.. Do a dual tunnelram propane 383. Should give you 900 CFM wide open. or you could try fuel injection, see if there is enough heat to gassify the propane(propane boils at --40). Cheers from Calgary.
But will you still have your easy access to Mexico for testing?
When`s the race against the death cart? Can`t wait to see what Slaghammer runs with the proper jets.
The more you own, the more it owns you. ...
Is that yellow thing a Dodge Kary Van? I have a '79 in my driveway. It's had the first 4' of the box converted into passenger space (think nice crew cab) and the box is now a sealed, 10' cargo area. Great for vike/cart racing, camping, traveling to car show/races, etc.. 😊 And the cab has a Dodge camp/van roof mod with a penta-star skylight for extra head room! 😊
Mix up a batch of 1/2gas +1/2 E85+, 1oz. Lacquer thinner per tank. That will give it one more Hp easy.
