Compressor Side-chain Filters
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Dan Worrall explains various uses of side-chain filtering in compressors, using FabFilter Pro-C and its Expert section. The tutorial discusses compressing subgroups/busses and the master bus but also gives some tips and tricks about single channel compression of vocals, guitars, bass and drums.
FabFilter Pro-C and other plug-ins are available via www.fabfilter.com/shop , and free 30-day trials van be downloaded from www.fabfilter.com/download .

I accept this voice as absolute truth
Dan Worrall's tutorials are the best i've seen on youtube!
You will have to make a duplicate track and patch a pre-fader send to the sidechain input of the compressor. Channel 1 = Snare Channel 2 = Snare (Copy) [pre-fader send --> Pro-Q sidechain] Remember to keep the fader of Channel 2 right down, as you are only using the send to trigger the compression and don't want it in the mix.
i love that Dan can be assertive at times like the Pro C but also be smooth like the Pro DS.
All the Fabfilter tutorials are done so wonderfully, that alone is a reason worth switching to their products. Plus the software stands out from the competition and delivers amazing results! I would love to see vocals pitch correction/harmony made by Fabfilter :)
Audio engineering is so beautiful! Is like being a physicist trying to solve the misteries of life 🫠🙃 Thanks to the great Dan Worrall for sharing his knowledge and making KZread better!
I really appreciate this kind of advertisement because it is simultaneously a useful educational resource for someone who doesn't even own the product and wants to know about side chain compression in general!
Correctly using a Compressor is one of the hardest things to grasp for someone just starting out their audio engineering career. My hat's off to you for a very precise and concise explanation on how and when to use Compressor side-chaining to control a frequencies dynamics. Great job! Thanks.
As he hinted at- some genres like to sidechain for a pumping compression. For a genre like hip-hop, getting a smooth side-chain where the tail-end of your kick drum smoothly leads into the boom of your subbass can be a plus.
Fabfilter videos = Most concise mix tutorials in human history...Thank you :-)
Fab filter are a class company. Excellent customer service and kind to students
Thanks Dan and FabFilter! Nice to see some more advanced compression advice. Really appreciate the modular approach w/ Ext sidechain advice. Never thought of that before :)
This video is 7 years old. The tom rack dynamics example can now be contained with a dynamic EQ. Like Pro Q3, Pro MB or even TDR Nova.
That was intense, loving it. Thanks for sharing!
brilliant tutorial!
These are the best tutorials ever
That was awsome guys thanks for sharing that, right on fabfilter you plugins are so much beyond anything else out there. On top of that the GuI is so smooth
Dan The MAN! This shit's so in depth, I'm not ready.
Awesomeness, as always. Thank you Dan The last section was rocket science to me. SC an EQ so the compressor reacts more to certain frequencies thus smoothing them out... that makes sense. How the heck I set that up, and where, and in what order.... brain fry.
Thank you Dan!
amazing tutorials!
really solid videos, as usual
I ti s kinda hard to understand how to set up the chain compression. How does the compressor get the signal from the EQ plugin?
Well done!
Great video. Beautiful song too, where can I find it?
@fabfilter Where can I find details about patching in the Pro-Q that you talked about at 10:05? Using Ableton.
Love Reaper!
So with the sidechain high pass filter at 100hz will nothing below be compressed at all? Or does the compressor still compress the full material but just acts triggered by the signal above 100hz?
I'm unsure where/how to patch the of Pro-Q to tune the EQ the compressor is listening to. (Around 8:45) Any help? Sorry for being 7 years late...
Would these techniques apply to sampled sounds? I make hip-hop beats using only samples and I know alot of them are already heavily processed.
man I've been trying to make it tru this section for years and still can't.. i'll get it someday.
Would love a good somewhat technical explanation of what exactly the different "styles" are doing differently to the signal, when all the other settings (ratio, threshold, attack, release, knee, make-up, sidechain, etc) are the same.
Anyone know how to set up the Ext sidechain in logic ?
Mind blown!
Is this song released?
I watch a tutorial where they use the sidechain eq filter in pro-c2 where they roll off the lows and highs and they say it's only compressing the mid frequencies bringing them forward. I thought it was just the detector what the compressor is listening to. Is it still compressing the whole signal or just the mid frequencies?

If it's a wideband compressor - then yes, it's still compressing the entire signal, but it's only reacting to the mids
I have a question, if I do an EQ sidechain with a high pass filter at 100hz, would the output gain of the compressor (increased volume) not affect the frequencies below 100hz? in other words the sub-bass parts will not become louder? because I would like to use this method on pianos and guitars and I would love it if the sub-bass parts do not get louder.

No, an ordinary compressor will act on the whole signal, including the low end, no matter any side chain eq. What you're looking for is a mulitband compressor or a dynamic equilizer, both of which can compress certain frequencies while leaving others alone.
What would be the advantage of doing this over multiband compression?

This video is 7 years old. You can do the tom compression using Pro MB or a Dynamic EQ.
FYI: the interface of the current version is different than what is shown here. Basically works the same tho.
ahh thanks alot man!
love you
Its a adventure watch this tutorials :)
ohhh so that is what that bar at the bottom was! A filter :)
Dan Worrall is like the Chuck Norris of music engineering
Boss!
Hi Mr Worrall. I'dlike to buy your FF gears but I don't understand everything you explain. Is it so difficult to put multilinguages subtitles? I think that will help at least 50% of your costumers. If you don't know how to do, I can send you a tutorial because it's so helpful for people. I lose too much time to translate and I'd rather spend this time to shape my music with FF. Please, Do it, don't be lazy, do it, do it, do it...Who agree? Thanks by advance
Ah les français toujours entrain de se plaindre. If you're going to complain, don't be arrogant. First, Dan Worrall doesn't own Fab Filter, he does tutorials for them but the decision to translate is up to the company not the engineer doing an excellent tutorial. No point getting mad at Mr Worrall there. Second, I don't see any multilingual subs from french companies like Arturia or XLISLab, why don't you go complain to them as well.
Shame his mic is quite Sibilant!
I hate to say that, but Waves Audio look like a smaller and dumber Fabfilters brother

Waves is hoarding hunt for plugins, 14 Fabfilter plugins can literally equate to 400's Waves plugins :)
I wonder if Dan compresses his voice, coz it sounds like drum hits:)
Dan your voice is a touch too quiet in this video. It's sometimes hard to understand what you're saying
